With Lajong coach Birendra Thapa choosing a youthful side to take on the Malaysian visitors, Everbrightson Sana (12', 66') and Phrangki Buam (47', 49') scored a brace each while substitutes Treimiki Lamurong (73') and Deibormame Tongper (90') added a strike each to the scoreline to earn the young side an opening victory in the tournament.
Starting with a 4-3-3 formation, Shillong's very own I-League contenders controlled the game from early on as Sana headed in a pinpoint cross from Rudra Ved in the 12th minute, after a smart free-kick routine initiated by Sheen Stevenson.
Malaysia's best chance in the first half came through a volley attempt by Mohamad Syamim Yusoff, which was narrowly punched clear by Lajong goalkeeper Siwel Rymbai. However, the Shillong defence, led by skipper Kenstar Kharshong and Saveme Tariang, remained firm to protect the lead.
The second half saw the home side return with a gusto as Buam netted twice in the first five minutes — first by guiding in a free-kick from Stevenson in the 47th and then doubling his tally with a calm finish to a through ball two minutes later.
The fourth goal came in the 66th minute as Sana turned sharply in the box and slotted the ball past the keeper to complete his brace.
Their dominance, however, continued with substitute Lamurong curling in a beautiful effort in the 73rd minute from the edge of the box and, just before the final whistle, another substitute Tongper made a composed finish to round off a dominant outing against the Malaysians.

Durand Cup 2025: Real Kashmir FC Outclass NEROCA FC To End Campaign On A High

Real Kashmir FC concluded their Durand Cup run with a 3-1 victory over NEROCA FC. The Group F winner will be determined in the Indian Navy vs TRAU FC match. Real Kashmir FC capped off their 134th Durand Cup campaign with a commanding 3-1 victory over NEROCA FC in a Group F clash at the Khuman Lampak Stadium on Sunday, displaying a clinical edge in front of goal despite already being out of contention for the knockout stages. The win took the I-League outfit, nicknamed the Snow Leopards, to six points from their three matches. Their hopes of progression had already been dented earlier in the group phase, but the result ensured they bowed out with momentum. The battle for top spot in Group F — and the sole quarterfinal berth — will now be decided on Tuesday when the Indian Navy faces TRAU FC. Veteran defender Salam Ranjan Singh, making full use of his experience and aerial prowess, broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Left unmarked inside the penalty area, Singh met a perfectly delivered corner and drilled his shot past the helpless NEROCA goalkeeper to put Real Kashmir 1-0 ahead. NEROCA, spurred on by their home supporters, responded positively. Their most promising chance of the half came when Saphaba Singh showcased his dribbling skills, weaving past two defenders to set up Arun Kumar, who fired just wide of the target. The second half began with NEROCA ramping up the pressure. Their persistence was rewarded in the 67th minute when Saphaba threaded a precise through ball to Brazilian forward Lucas Chagas. With just the keeper to beat, Chagas kept his composure and slotted past Furqan to make it 1-1, igniting hopes of a home comeback. Those hopes lasted barely three minutes. Real Kashmir immediately hit back from a set-piece situation. A free-kick from the right was whipped in by Rohen Singh, flicked on by Toure, and landed perfectly for Maret Tareck, who calmly finished into the far corner to restore the visitors' advantage. As NEROCA pushed forward in search of another equaliser, they left gaps at the back. In the 82nd minute, Real Kashmir exploited that space to devastating effect. Tareck turned provider, surging down the flank before threading a pass to Modou Mbengue. The Gambian striker took a deft touch, cut inside, and fired a low drive past the goalkeeper to make it 3-1 and effectively end the contest. A Strong Finish Despite Early Exit While the Snow Leopards' journey in this year's Durand Cup ends in the group stage, their performance against NEROCA demonstrated the squad's attacking depth and resilience. For NEROCA, who finished with just two points from their three matches, the defeat marks a disappointing end to their campaign. The focus now shifts to the decisive Indian Navy vs TRAU FC fixture, which will determine who advances as Group F winners. "Cristiano Ronaldo Was...": Ex-Manchester United Manager Erik Ten Hag On 'Past' Struggles

Former Manchester United head coach Erik Ten Hag has stated that Cristiano Ronaldo was never the problem at the club, hinting that the issues lay deeper than the Portuguese striker, who left the club on poor terms during the Dutch head coach's reign. Ronaldo left Manchester United for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr in 2023 after having fallen out of favour with Ten Hag. 'For me, it is no problem; he was never the problem. I think it was what happened. It's the past, and after that, we won two trophies at Manchester United. I wish him all the best for the future, and I wish him the best of luck,' said Ten Hag. Ten Hag went on to win an FA Cup and Carabao Cup with the Red Devils before he was sacked midway through the 2024/25 season. After spending the second half recharging his batteries, Ten Hag landed at Bayer Leverkusen. His comments follow after his side lost 0-2 against Chelsea in a pre-season friendly. Two years after leaving United, Ronaldo fired shots at Ten Hag's mindset and approach and said a Manchester United coach should not have a mentality that the team can't fight for the league and UCL titles. "They need to rebuild everything, in my opinion. The coach says they cannot compete to win the League and Champions League. Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the League or Champions League. You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don't have that potential, but I cannot say that. We're going to try. You have to try," Ronaldo told former teammate Rio Ferdinand in a podcast. Ronaldo, on the other hand, is gearing up for the new season with a bang. He scored a hat-trick against Liga Portugal side Rio Ave F.C. and will now face Al-Ittihad Club on Tuesday in the semifinal of the Saudi Super Cup.

A Bagan masterclass for DHFC

1 2 Kolkata: At the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday, Jamie Maclaren and Jason Cummings returned to do what they have been doing for long — scoring goals. Mohun Bagan SG returned to their happy hunting ground to do what they have been doing for long — producing the right performance for the right game. And the result? Jose Molina's ISL champions stormed into the knockout stage of Durand Cup with an all-win streak, demolishing a 10-man Diamond Harbour FC (DHFC) 5-1 and bringing Kibu Vicuna's high-flying team down to earth. Debutants DHFC equalized within five minutes, Luka Majcen beating an offside trap to latch on to Jobby Justin's pass and finding the target for the third match running. But Maclaren established Bagan's lead in the 35th minute, providing an easy finish to Sahal Abdul Samad's deft assist. DHFC came into the game as an in-form team and Group B leaders by dint of a better goal difference. Despite trailing at halftime, they appeared to look the fancied rivals in the eye until then. However, the contour and complexion of the game changed completely in the 51st minute when Liston earned and converted a penalty for his fifth goal of the tournament and DHFC were reduced to 10 men a tad controversially with the expulsion of their defender Naresh Singh Yendrembam. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A 10-Minute Habit That Keeps Your Mind Sharp Sudoku Kingdom Learn More Undo As Liston began his trademark run towards the box, Naresh was left with the only option of stopping Bagan's No. 7 in his tracks by pulling him from behind. Although TV replays suggested the foul might have taken place just outside the box, but Colaco fell in the challenge inside the box, forcing referee Ashwin to point to the spot. As Naresh and his teammates remonstrated with Ashwin for his decision, the referee flashed a straight red card to the DHFC defender. DHFC goalkeeper Susnata rightly guessed Colaco's shot from the spot but it was not enough to prevent Bagan from going 3-1 up. DHFC stuttered and stumbled and then, lost the plot completely thereafter. Bagan, on the other hand, went for the jugular. The next two goals were devoid of any controversy though and represented the depth of Bagan's attacking might. Sahal made it 4-1 in the 64th minute, pouncing on the opportunity when DHFC substitute Robilal Mandi failed to deal with a layoff from Jason Cummins who replaced Maclaren in the second half. Cummings completed the rout, receiving a ball from Asish Rai near the D and beat the rival goalkeeper with a left-footed striker. As Bagan — who lost last year's final to NorthEast United FC — progressed to the quarterfinals with three wins in a row, I-League 2 champions DHFC — who finished their group campaign with six points — would now have their fate determined by results in other groups. Six group champions and two second-best teams would advance to the quarterfinals. SATURDAY'S RESULTS Group B: Diamond Harbour FC 1 (Majcen 24) Mohun Bagan SG 5 (Thapa 19, Maclaren 35, Liston 51 pen, Sahal 64, Cummings 80). Group D: Bodoland FC 1 (Robinson 69) Punjab FC 0.
