When travelling from Solihull to Birmingham, Leanne Allen's journey is disrupted as soon as she starts. The 35-year-old is a writer, and relies on public transport when travelling for work, but as a wheelchair user she often faces delays due broken lifts, assistance not arriving, and inconsiderate parking. The lift at Chiltern Railways' Solihull Station has been broken for six weeks, with the rail operator providing taxis and apologising for the issue.Ms Allen said: "If I can't cross a road on Monday, and on Tuesday I get left on the train, and on Wednesday the lift is broken, the cumulative effect of that is just incredibly tiring.
"The overall message is, listen to disabled people."
The free replacement taxis mean Ms Allen can still travel, but it extends her journey by at least 30 minutes, if not longer at rush hour. However, on one occasion a taxi did not arrive, with Ms Allen saying passenger assistance at Chiltern told her "there was nothing more they could do"A spokesperson for the rail operator has since told the BBC "there were some difficulties sourcing a taxi".They added that the company was "continuing to work with Network Rail to resolve a fault with the lift at the station" but despite temporary fixes, "the lift continues to have persistent issues".Once in Birmingham, there are more problems to navigate, Ms Allen uses dropped kerbs to cross the road safely, however these are often blocked. Ms Allen said she experienced "people parking across them, leaving bikes, bin bags, scaffolding. Lots of obstacles"."It just feels very dangerous," she added. "I don't think anyone takes any notice of the signage, I just don't think people see it as a punishable thing, so they won't stop doing it if there is no consequence"
Ms Allen also travels to London for work and leisure, and said she faced similar difficulties there. Even getting to the capital can be problematic, as rail operators occasionally forget to send assistance when the train arrives. "Now they have got an app, it has made a really big difference. But in terms of actually actioning the assistance, I've had so many fails. "I've been left on so many trains where people just haven't brought the ramp to get me off. I can't even describe the level of anxiety it creates." "I'm not an angry person but by the end of the week I think, I'm just trying to live a normal life, and these things are so easily avoidable 99% of the time." Ms Allen added.

A VENOMOUS spider with an 'excruciating bite' has arrived in the UK as a tourist's hand swelled up 'like a blimp' after coming into contact with the creepy-crawly. Hugh Marsh from Perth, Australia, was in Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, for his cousin's wedding when he found the stowaway in his shoes. 5 5 Initially thinking there was a wedge of tissue in the toe, he reached in and pulled it out, only to discover seconds later that it was webbing. With his hand reddened and itchy, Mr Marsh quickly washed it - but it was too late, and the next day it was blown up like a "blimp". "I discovered it in my left shoe just before a wedding," the 30-year-old said. "I looked in thinking there was a wedge of tissue in the toe, and pulled it out, like you would, with my fingers. "That's when I noticed my hand starting to feel itchy and saw the hairs." Hugh said he "immediately" knew something was wrong. He added: "I washed my hands thoroughly, but the damage was done. "And I had a wedding to go to, so hoped it was just a small effect. "I didn't expect the blimp of a hand the next day." He added: "My whole hand was swollen like a balloon." Images captured by Mr Marsh show his hand puffed up in reaction to the spider 's hairs. "It was as if I'd stuck my hand into a pile of cactuses," he said. "Extremely fine short hairs covered my middle and index finger, from the tips to the middle knuckle." The Aussie event photographer reckons he hadn't worn the shoes for two or three years before the big day, and that they'd been in his closet the whole time. And though he didn't photograph the spider and is unsure of the species, he thinks it could have been a 'Badumna insignis' after looking at pictures. An Australian native species, it's better known as the black house spider, and is more dangerous than its name suggests, packing an excruciatingly painful bite. Some victims have reported nausea, vomiting, sweating, dizziness, and even skin necrosis from their venom. Hugh is just relieved the spider was already dead. He said: "It was a black spider with thin legs and large mandibles, about the size of an Australian 50 cent coin. "It had been deceased for a while by the looks of it. "It was like it had gone into the shoe, wrapped itself in a cocoon of webbing and died." He continued: "I think it's pretty funny overall. "Thankfully it was just the spider hairs that stuck into my fingers and not an actual bite - I'd be a little worried how that could've gone." Hugh was able to enjoy the wedding with paracetamol before seeking medical attention. He was advised to use a strong antihistamine, but said it took a week for the swelling to go down. The news comes just days after it was revealed that a giant wasp spider has been discovered in the UK. The rare spider with a wasp-like body has been found in a garden in Norfolk - and they're slowly spreading across the nation. 5 5

Oxford road set for overnight closures ahead of traffic filter trial

A key city road will close overnight next month to allow for layout changes and signage ahead of an upcoming traffic filter Ferry Road and Cherwell Drive in Oxford will shut from 22 to 27 September, between 19:30 and 06:00, for resurfacing and installation of traffic islands and County Council confirmed the works were part of preparations for the trial, which will see motorists fined £70 for driving through certain roads at restricted times. Marston Ferry Road is one of six filter trial has been delayed until after Botley Road reopens following the completion of major rail improvement works in August 2026. In the meantime, the council is considering a temporary £5 congestion charge on the same roads. A decision is expected in mid-September after a public approved, the charge could begin this autumn. The proposal will be reviewed by the council's scrutiny committee on 27 August, with a final decision due on 10 on Hollow Way and Marston Ferry Road would operate Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 09:00 and 15:00 to 18:00. On other roads - Hythe Bridge Street, St Cross Road, Thames Street, St Clements, and Hollow Way - they would apply daily from 07:00 to 19:00.
