Four removed from VMC cattle teams after bribery video surfaces

Time of India6 hours ago
Vadodara: Three security personnel and a team leader from a private security agency working with the Vadodara Municipal Corporation's (VMC) cattle encroachment teams have been dismissed after videos and screenshots surfaced showing them taking bribes from cattle keepers.
The VMC deploys private security staff, along with municipal and city police officials, to impound stray cattle. Each team has about 14 members, including a driver. Audio clips that went viral on Tuesday captured a team member allegedly accepting money from a cattle keeper to either avoid impounding cattle or release them after capture.
A UPI payment screenshot and conversations suggesting the exchange of liquor as well as cash were also circulated.
Senior VMC officials verified the authenticity of the recordings and identified the cattle keeper involved. "Three security personnel from the cattle party and their team leader have been removed by the security agency. We have also imposed a Rs 5 lakh fine on the agency," said Mangesh Jaiswal, VMC's director for encroachment removal and security.
Jaiswal noted that security personnel, except the team leader, are barred from carrying phones on duty — a rule introduced after allegations they were tipping off cattle keepers.
He added that the bribery conversations appeared to have been recorded while personnel were using phones outside duty hours.

The offence was registered at Juhu police station against Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra under IPC sections of cheating and forgery. Since the amount involved is more than Rs 10 crore, the case was transferred to the EOW. The FIR follows a preliminary enquiry by the EOW into a complaint filed by Deepak Kothari. Kothari said one Rajesh Arya introduced him to Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty, who were directors of Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, a home shopping and online retail platform. At the time, the couple reportedly held 87.6% shares in the company. ED arrests former civic chief of Vasai-Virar, his junior and a former corporator in case linked to illegal construction of 41 buildings

Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested IAS officer Anil Pawar, former civic commissioner of Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC), along with his junior, deputy director of town planning Y S Reddy, and two others, including a former BVA corporator, in a money laundering case linked to the illegal construction of 41 buildings and defrauding flat buyers. The ED will produce the arrested individuals before the court on Thursday. According to the ED, Pawar engaged in extensive manipulation and bribery, initiating these activities shortly after assuming the role of civic chief in 2022. He laundered the illicitly obtained funds through shell companies, ED said. The ED questioned Pawar and his wife at least four times last week and subsequently decided to arrest him for non-cooperation on Wednesday. In May, the ED had raided Reddy and seized Rs 8.6 crore in unaccounted cash along with Rs 23.2 crore worth of jewellery and bullion from at his residence in Hyderabad. The investigation identified Sitaram Gupta, former BVA corporator, and Arun Gupta as key perpetrators in the illegal construction scheme, which involved collusion with various VVMC officials. Recently, the ED searched Pawar's premises and those associated with him, uncovering approximately Rs 1.3 crore in unaccounted cash kept with a relative and several property documents. The ED initiated the search after gathering evidence of Pawar accepting bribes from builders based on square footage rates while approving their projects, leading to illegal practices and money laundering. It was stated that Pawar had not acted against the 41 illegal buildings constructed earlier after taking charge of VVCMC and had collected bribes for not initiating action against those involved in construction. The ED's recent raid on Pawar sparked political controversy as Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut claimed that Pawar's appointment as VVCMC chief was secured with the help of school education minister Dada Bhuse, a senior member of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, by bending the rules. Bhuse acknowledged that Pawar is his distant relative and stated that the appointment occurred during Uddhav Thackeray's tenure as chief minister. Reddy was working with the VVCMC for a long time and during the recent search at his premises with several others had provided crucial evidence to ED against Pawar. The money laundering case pertains to the unauthorised construction of 41 residential and commercial buildings on govt and private land under the jurisdiction of the VVMC since 2009. This included land spanning 60 acres designated for sewage treatment and dumping facilities. Although Pawar was not the commissioner during the construction period, he failed to take action against the activities despite complaints while serving as VVMC chief. The 41 buildings were demolished only after a recent court order, resulting in financial and housing losses for those who had purchased flats in the structures. Elderly make up 10% of cybercrime victims in AP: Police

Visakhapatnam: Elderly citizens in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Kurnool and a few other cities and towns in Andhra Pradesh are turning targets for cybercrooks. Police observed that senior citizens are vulnerable to cybercrooks due to their trusting nature, lack of much digital awareness, loneliness, financial stability and lack of immediate support. The police said the senior citizens are turning victims in 10 per cent of the total cybercrimes in the cities and towns. In some cases, the victims don't report the crime out of shame, fear or lack of knowledge and sometimes the victims fall into depression due to emotional toll. In what may turn out to be the biggest cyber financial frauds from an individual reported to cyber crime police station in Vizag city, a 64-year-old man lost Rs5.25 crore. He received a WhatsApp message with the name of a known sharing trading company and he was promised high returns on investments. The cyber crooks added him to a WhatsApp group. Trusting their claims, the victim transferred money to various bank accounts provided by the fraudsters. In another incident, a 62-year-old man from Vizag city, was duped over Rs 36 lakh after being manipulated and threatened through WhatsApp video calls by callers posing as Delhi police officers. The fraudsters falsely implicated the man in a fabricated money laundering case and coerced him to transfer his savings. Similarly, a 65-year-old retired teacher from Vijayawada locality fell into the digital arrest trap of cyber criminals and ended up losing over Rs31 lakh, including his hard-earned funds. In this case too, the victim was falsely accused of being involved in human trafficking citing that the victim's Aadhar card was used by a man who has been involved in human trafficking cases for opening of a bank account. The fraudsters posed as TRAI and police officials threatened him that they would arrest him and they looted his hard earned money. As cyber cases of senior citizens falling victim to various cybercrimes and losing their savings, experts say, it is vital to address the need for spreading awareness and protective measures for this vulnerable group. We have observed that with the increasing digitisation of banking, and day-to-day services, senior citizens have become soft targets for cybercriminals. Most of the elderly people don't have much digital knowledge and they don't know about websites that are malicious. The fraudsters have been creating fear, confusion and urgency among senior citizens in the name of digital arrest scams and looting the hard earnings of the senior citizens, said inspector of cyber crime police station, K Bhavani Prasad. We have been creating awareness among the senior citizens about various cyber crimes, particularly digital arrests and investment frauds as most of the senior citizens are turning victims in digital arrests frauds, he added. We have observed that sometimes the senior citizens don't get immediate support from their son/daughter as they stay in other cities. The fraudsters exploit the senior citizens' trust, unfamiliarity with digital tools, and emotional triggers, leading to distressing financial and psychological consequences, said a police officer. Though the internet has brought convenience for us, it also opened doors to scam targeting older people as we are not very tech-savvy and lack cyber awareness, said K Srinvas, a senior citizen in Vizag city. It is the collective responsibility of police, banks and few others to educate the senior citizens about how to identify scams and how to tackle to mitigate such incidents, he added.
