Nashville SC signs Ahmed Qasem, 21-year-old midfielder from Sweden

Yahoo18-02-2025

Nashville SC has signed midfielder Ahmed Qasem, a 21-year-old from Sweden who most recently played for IF Elfsborg in the Allsvenskan, Sweden's premier league.
'Ahmed is a dynamic attacking player who has the ability to create and finish scoring opportunities,' Nashville SC general manager Mike Jacobs said in a news release. 'His athleticism and versatility enable him to contribute in a number of different roles and options.'
Qasem's contract with Nashville runs through the 2027 MLS season with an option for 2028, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa. Swedish newspaper Expressen reported that Nashville and Elfsborg agreed on a transfer fee of 45 million krona, equal to $4.2 million dollars, which would make Qasem the third-most expensive acquisition in club history behind Aké Loba in 2021 ($6.8 million) and Sam Surridge in 2023 ($6.5 million).
Last season, Qasem had five goals and four assists in 27 league matches, and totaled three more goals in continental competition as Elfsborg appeared in the Europa League against powerhouses including Tottenham Hotspur, Athletic Bilbao and AS Roma.
Qasem totaled 11 goals and 13 assists in 87 games for Elfsborg. He previously played for his hometown club, Motala, where he scored eight goals in 54 games from 2019-20.

Born in Sweden of Iraqi descent, Qasem has played for Sweden's under-17, under-19 and under-21 national teams. He scored three goals in 10 games for the U-19 squad and has made five appearances for the U-21s.
Qasem, who will occupy an international roster slot, was signed to a U22 Initiative player, meaning that Nashville was able to sign him for a reduced budget charge against a more lucrative contract. Nashville currently has three U22 slots, two of which are occupied by Qasem and midfielder Patrick Yazbek, who signed last summer.

USMNT not worried about ‘outside noise' following former player criticism

USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams has said that the squad are not worried about 'outside' criticism from former players after the team's recent poor form. Mauricio Pochettino's side were soundly defeated 4-0 by Switzerland in a friendly at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee on Tuesday. The loss was the team's fourth in a row after defeats in the Concacaf Nations League semi-finals against Panama and the subsequent third-place match against Canada, and in a friendly against Turkey on Saturday. The U.S. have now lost five of their 10 games under Pochettino, who was appointed in September 2024. Pochettino's side were without star player Christian Pulisic, as well as his Milan team-mate Yunus Musah, for the games against Turkey and Switzerland, with both players set to miss the summer's Gold Cup. The U.S. take on Trinidad and Tobago in their first fixture of the tournament on Sunday and will also face Saudi Arabia and Haiti in the group stage. Advertisement Former U.S. forwards Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan were among those to criticise the players, with Adams saying that the squad are tuning out the comments. 'We don't talk about that internally as a group,' Adams told the Associated Press. 'The noise on the outside is the noise on the outside. I think we need to focus on what we need to do as a group and continue to build.' Dempsey said last week that he did not 'understand' the move to miss the Gold Cup and pointed to his own experience appearing at tournaments for the U.S.. 'Whether it was Gold Cup, whether it was Copa (America), whether it was Confederations Cup, whether it was the World Cup, I wasn't going to miss competitions,' Dempsey said on the Men in Blazers podcast. 'For me, I don't understand it because that wasn't my mentality. I always wanted to play in those games.' Donovan, who is second on the U.S. all-time appearance charts and shares the goalscoring record with Dempsey at 57 each, brought up the situation while working as an analyst for FOX's coverage of the UEFA Nations League final, which saw Portugal defeat Spain on penalties. 'This is what it means to represent your country,' Donovan said after Portugal's victory. 'And if you don't want to take this, as a professional soccer player and someone who gets the opportunity to wear that jersey and take it seriously and responsibly, then don't come in. 'I can't help but think about some of our guys on vacation right now not wanting to play in the Gold Cup.' Donovan also criticised the team in March, writing on X: 'I'm so sick of hearing how 'talented' this group of players is and all of the amazing clubs they play for. If you aren't going to show up and actually give a s*** about playing for your national team, decline the invite. Talent is great, pride is better.' Dempsey added that he was 'worried about the future of this U.S. men's national team.' Juventus' Weston McKennie and Tim Weah as well as Borussia Dortmund's Gio Reyna are also set to miss the Gold Cup due to their team's participation at the Club World Cup, which begins on Saturday. Adams missed the Switzerland match with an injury that he attributed to 'overload'. Advertisement 'A little turf toe-type injury,' said the 26-year-old. 'More of an overuse thing probably than anything — overload. It was something that I picked up when I came into camp. Progressing well right now, but just trying to be smart and manage it.' Adams, who plays for Bournemouth in the Premier League, made 32 appearances in all competitions last season as his side finished ninth in the table. ()

Manchester United unveil new home kit with Old Trafford inspiration

Fresh start: Manchester United will be hoping a new kit brings better results next season (Adidas / Manchester United) Manchester United have unveiled their new home kit for the 2025/26 season. The club will be keen to put a miserable campaign behind them, having finished 15th in the Premier League table and lost in the Europa League final to Tottenham. Advertisement It means there will be no European football for United next season, further adding to the difficulty of rebuilding Ruben Amorim's squad. United have, though, already secured the signing of Matheus Cunha and he will be seen in the new kit come pre-season. Adidas have opted for a 'classic design' but with an 'abstract sleeve graphic' inspired by the club's Old Trafford stadium. Different shades of red on the sleeve are said to showcase elements of the pitch, stands and tunnel. Mason Mount in the new Manchester United home kit (Adidas / Manchester United) The shirt has a black and white V-neck collar and three black stripes running down the shoulders, as well as a 'Theatre of Dreams' sign-off on the back of the collar. Advertisement Juergen Rank, Senior Design Director at Adidas said: 'The colour red is fundamental to the club's DNA. 'There have been many different expressions of it over the years and for this season we wanted to do something a little different, using the sleeves as a canvas. 'The abstract graphic stays true to the club's DNA while providing an innovative look at feel to an otherwise classy and classic jersey.' The fan replica of the kit is available to buy for £85, with the on-field version costing £120.

Danish media believe Rasmus Hojlund's international spot at risk

Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund's place in Denmark's national team could soon be in danger according to Danish media. The forward endured a terrible season where he only scored four domestic goals . Advertisement He did fare better in Europe, grabbing six goals in United's run to the final of the Europa League. As a result, United are said to be keen to add further firepower to their squad this season and have been heavily linked to a move for Sporting CP striker, Viktor Gyokeres. Hojlund's poor form has transferred over to international football as he put in a terrible performance against Northern Ireland on Saturday despite his side winning 2-1. Consequently, the 22 year old forward was dropped to the bench for Denmark's friendly clash with Lithuania and the Danish media were drooling over his replacement, Mika Biereth. Advertisement It only took the Monaco striker 12 minutes to fire in his side's opener and his night's work was given an eight out of 10 by Danish outlet Bold. Analysing Hojlund's replacement they claimed, 'the Monaco striker already showed with his diving header against Northern Ireland how dangerous he is in the box. On Tuesday night, Mika Biereth only had to spend 12 minutes on the pitch in Odense before he put Denmark 1-0 up.' 'He then provided an assist, drew a red card and was constantly poisonous near the goal. Rasmus Højlund must be shaking in his pants right now. He has been overtaken.' Hojlund was subbed on after 72 minutes but failed to get a rating from the outlet for not making enough impression on the game. Advertisement Sofascore did give him a rating of 6.9, as he completed four passes and had one shot on goal and one effort off target, failing to score once again for his national side. Inter Milan have been linked with making a move for the out-of-sorts forward but after the Denmark game on Saturday, he claimed that his future was at Old Trafford and he was committed to the project at the club.
