The
University of Waterloo
has made the unprecedented decision to cancel the results of its annual
Canadian Computing Competition
(CCC) due to widespread suspected cheating involving artificial intelligence (AI). As first reported by The Logic, the university cited a "significant number of students" who breached the competition's regulations. In a statement, the university expressed its disappointment, noting that the rule violations would negatively impact deserving students. Officials added that they are actively "considering possible ways to address this problem for future contests." The University of Waterloo is among the biggest Universties in Cananda.
The University of Waterloo's Centre for Computing and Math took this action after discovering numerous instances of students submitting code that was not their own. The CCC is a crucial event for many aspiring students, as strong performance can significantly enhance their applications to Waterloo's highly regarded computing and engineering programs. Furthermore, the competition serves as a pathway for students to qualify for teams representing Canada in international informatics competitions.
The CCC attracts talented students globally, drawn by the opportunity to strengthen their prospects of admission to Waterloo's competitive STEM fields. The university boasts a distinguished alumni network in these areas, including prominent figures such as RBC Chief Executive Dave McKay, BlackBerry founder Mike Lazaridis, and Social Capital CEO Chamath Palihapitiya. The cancellation underscores the growing challenges educational institutions face in maintaining academic integrity in the age of increasingly sophisticated AI tools.

Normally, official results from the CCC would be released shortly after the contest. For this year's contest, however, we will not be releasing official results. The reason for this is the significant number of students who violated the CCC Rules. In particular, it is clear that many students submitted code that they did not write themselves, relying instead on forbidden external help. As such, the reliability of 'ranking' students would neither be equitable, fair, or accurate.
The consequences of not releasing official results will come as a disappointment to the majority of students who wrote the contest with integrity and honesty. It is disappointing that the students who violated the CCC Rules will impact those students who are deserving of recognition.
We are considering possible ways to address this problem for future contests.

No merchant discount rate on UPI transactions
New Delhi: The government is fully committed to promoting digital payments via Unified Payment Interface (UPI), the finance ministry said Wednesday, adding there will be no merchant discount rate (MDR) on UPI transactions . MDR is a rate charged to a merchant for the payment processing of debit and credit card transactions. "Speculation and claims that the MDR will be charged on UPI transactions are completely false, baseless and misleading," it said in a statement, adding that such speculations cause needless uncertainty, fear and suspicion among the citizens. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bank Owned Properties For Sale In Damai Bahagia (Prices May Surprise You) Foreclosed Homes | Search ads Search Now Undo To promote digital transactions, MDR was made zero from January 2020 for RuPay debit cards and BHIM-UPI transactions through amendments in Section 10A of the Payments and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 and Section 269SU of the Income Tax Act, 1961. To support the payment ecosystem participants in effective delivery of services, "Incentive scheme for promotion of RuPay debit cards and low-value BHIM-UPI transactions (P2M)" has been implemented, the government said in March. Only UPI (P2M) transactions up to ₹2,000 for small merchants are covered under the scheme.

Liquor excise duty hiked to cover last fiscal losses?
Nagpur: The state government may have approved a hike in excise duty on liquor with an eye on raising an additional ₹14,000 crore, but data reveals that the excise department failed to meet its revenue target in the last fiscal year in Nagpur. The excise department collected over ₹825 crore during the financial year ending March 2025, which was more than 20% below the target. Collections across the entire Nagpur division — which includes Gondia, Bhandara, and Chandrapur districts in addition to Nagpur — also fell short. The total mop-up in the division stood at ₹872 crore, missing the target by 20%. In the first two months of the current financial year, the department has collected ₹111 crore. The revenue target for Nagpur district has been set at ₹1,051 crore. Based on a monthly break-up, the excise department needs to collect around ₹175 crore per month to meet the target. The current mop-up stands at 63% below the required mark. In FY 2024-25, over 4.7 crore litres of liquor were produced by various entities in the district. Country liquor accounted for the majority at 3.8 crore litres, followed by 40 lakh litres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL), and over 50 lakh litres of beer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo While production of country liquor and beer remained as expected, IMFL production declined by 6.4 lakh litres, which sources attributed as one of the primary reasons for the revenue shortfall. Sources said that despite a year-on-year increase in actual collections, the targets could not be achieved. The collections include both excise duty and licence renewal fees paid by vendors. Excise duty is levied at the manufacturing stage and passed on to wholesalers and retailers. The government had fixed the revenue target, anticipating an increase in production, particularly of IMFL, which did not materialise. Production in Nagpur remains significantly lower compared to other centres in the state. The department is now awaiting the final government resolution (GR) on the excise duty hike, after which the revised rates will apply to fresh batches of production.

In Gurgaon, task force set up to probe illegalbusinesses on road to Galleria Market
Gurgaon: After the National Green Tribunal's (NGT) intervention in a case concerning illegal commercial activities along the road leading to Galleria Market in Sector 27, deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar announced plans to constitute an inter-departmental team to probe the matter. The team will include officials from MCG, HSPCB, Haryana State Pollution Control Board, Town Planning, and DHBVN, and will inspect the site and submit a detailed report. The action follows a petition by residents, highlighting severe environmental violations such as illegal commercial operations, including illegal use of diesel generator sets, open waste burning and untreated sewage discharge, allegedly causing severe air and noise pollution in the area. Deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar said, "We have taken note of the concerns raised regarding the illegal commercial activities in Sector 27. An inter-departmental team will be formed shortly to examine the entire situation on the ground. Based on their findings, appropriate action will be taken." The petition highlighted that multiple shops, eateries, and workshops have been operating without licences or environmental clearances near Hamilton Court and Galleria Market. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! Despite disconnection, the establishments reportedly continued operations using DG sets in violation of environmental norms. The petitioner also alleged that despite submitting several complaints to the authorities between August 2024 and March 2025, no concrete action was taken. Meanwhile, residents have welcomed the DC's decision. "We've been suffering due to unchecked pollution, traffic congestion, and foul smells from untreated waste for months. This is the first time the administration is taking the issue seriously," said Pooja Singh, a resident of Sector 27. Environmental activists have also urged the administration to ensure that the committee's findings lead to on-ground enforcement. "Reports are not enough. What we need is action—sealing of illegal units and penalties against violators," said Vikram Singh, a city-based environmentalist. The inter-departmental committee is expected to start its inspection soon and submit a detailed report before the next NGT hearing scheduled for July 4, 2025.
