Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupts
JAKARTA, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara Province erupted on Friday, spewing a more than 10 kilometre (6.21 miles) high ash column, the country's volcanology agency said. The volcano had experienced a number of eruptions in recent months, including an eruption in early July where it belched an 18 kilometre volcanic ash, causing flight disruptions to and from the nearby resort island of Bali. The volcanology agency on Friday warned people to clear a 6-7 kilometre area from the crater and to be cautious of mudflow risks in case of heavy rainfall. Photos shared by the agency showed a dramatic scene of volcanic lightning flashing over the volcano and the ash column reflecting the red colour of the lava flowing down the mountain's slopes.

Colombia deforestation surges 43% fueled by fires, land-grabbing
BOGOTA, July 31 (Reuters) - Deforestation in Colombia surged last year, according to data from the country's environment ministry said on Thursday, as some 113,608 hectares (1,136 square km) were destroyed largely in its Amazon region, 43% more than in the previous year. The figure marks a sharp reversal after 2023 saw the amount of forest land destroyed fall 36% from the prior year to 79,256 hectares (793 square km) - its lowest level in 23 years. "Deforestation persists," Environment Minister Lena Estrada said at a press conference in Bogota. "The most affected territory is the Amazon, a fragile territory." Estrada said the increase in 2024 was partly due to forest fires spurred by a drought, fueled by climate change. Land-grabbing for pastures, the expansion of livestock farming, illegal road construction, and more growing of illicit crops such as coca leaves were also primary drivers, she said. The Amazon region accounted for more than 65% of the total loss, with some 75,000 hectares destroyed. Colombia is one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world and is home to thousands of plant and animal species, although it loses swathes of forest each year to deforestation. The South American country has approximately 59.1 million hectares of forest, covering more than half its territory.

Yu Weiguo, ruling Communist Party boss in the worst-hit Miyun district, announced: "There were gaps in our preparatory plans. Our knowledge of extreme weather was lacking. "This tragic lesson has warned us that putting the people first, putting human life first, is more than a slogan." The floods tore through homes in the Miyun District with dozens of casualties coming from an elderly care home. Around 77 residents were inside the home when the floods hit. Many of them were immobile or severely disabled and were under constant supervision from carers. Over half were trapped in their rooms as water levels rose to almost 6ft, according to Chinese media. A devastated Chinese official explained at a press conference on Thursday that the care home was supposed to have been in a "safe zone". The central area of the town where the nursing home was located wasn't included in any evacuation scope meaning rescuers weren't able to help until it was too late. Officials had tried to battle through the surging waves but were unable to rescue more than seven of the residents. The government has allocated 350 million yuan ($49million) for disaster relief in nine regions hit by heavy rains. Natural disasters are common across China, particularly in the summer when some regions experience heavy rain while others bake in searing heat. In 2023, heavy rain killed more than 80 people across northern and northeastern China, including at least 29 people in Hebei where severe flooding destroyed homes and crops.
