KUALA LUMPUR - The mysterious disappearance of Scottish pioneer Louis James Fraser in 1910-at a site now known as Fraser's Hill in Raub, Pahang-has been reimagined for the big screen in Misteri Fraser 1910, a historical horror film set to premiere on June 26.
Producer Elani Aidid said the idea for the film came about while scouting for a filming location at the hill resort in 2019. Starring Josiah Hogan as Mr Fraser, the film also features a cast of popular local actors including Amai Kamarudin, Siti Hariesa, Isyariana, Erry Putra, and many more. - Bernama photo
"While we were there, we came across the story of Mr Fraser, who mysteriously vanished after discovering a tin ore deposit in the area and was never found again. In fact, some of the hiking trails there are named after individuals involved in the search for him, such as the 'Bishop Trail' and 'Abu Suradi Trail'.
"That sparked the idea for me to research and create a fictional theory behind his disappearance, which eventually led to the making of this film,' she said in a statement today.
She added that besides being a popular tourist spot, Fraser's Hill also holds its share of mysteries-including the disappearance of the Scottish pioneer.
According to Elani, Mr Fraser's disappearance makes for a compelling film subject, as his story is well-known and frequently searched online both locally and abroad.
However, she noted that the film is only inspired by the true events that took place 115 years ago, and has been fictionalised based on her own research, local accounts, and commercial elements to make it suitable for cinema.
"What I can say is that 50 per cent of the film is based on true events, while the other 50 per cent is fiction. The screenplay was funded by the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) under its Script Development Grant,' she said.
Elani noted that the film's uniqueness lies not only in its horror elements but also in its historical appeal, transporting viewers to the classic world of 1910 with period-accurate dialogue, costumes, and props.
She also shared that Misteri Fraser 1910 was recently named Best First-Time Filmmaker at the Lift-Off Global Network Sessions Vol 4 held at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom, where it competed against 26 films from various countries.
The film received the highest number of votes at the festival, held from April 21 to May 4, with the votes coming from international viewers.
"In addition to winning at that festival, we've also submitted the film to 32 other international competitions. The most recent is a festival in Russia, scheduled for September,' she added.

Malaysia music industry study to address challenges and development
KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Communications is implementing a comprehensive Music Industry Development Study to examine critical issues facing the sector. This initiative aims to identify challenges and propose actionable plans for empowering sustainable development within Malaysia's music industry. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil highlighted the study's broad scope during his parliamentary address. He stated, 'For music, we currently do not have a specific act, therefore the ministry is looking into the best way to ensure that an act is drafted to ensure the welfare, sustainability and development of the music industry.' The minister confirmed the study will refine business models, governance structures, and staffing considerations. It will also examine specific legislative frameworks that could support industry development. Fahmi emphasized the inclusive approach being taken to gather diverse perspectives. He revealed that twenty members have been appointed to the Music Industry Protem Committee representing various sectors. These include composers, lyricists, recording companies, singers, musicians, and academicians. The committee also features representatives from Collective Management Organisations, publishing companies, associations, and event management professionals. Their collective input will directly inform the study's findings and recommendations. Fahmi explained how the study outcomes will guide future regulatory decisions. He said the results would determine 'the availability and need for a specific body to regulate the development of the music industry or to include the music industry in the functions of existing agencies or regulatory bodies.' Separately, the minister addressed proposed amendments to the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia Act 1981. He confirmed these amendments are expected to be tabled in the upcoming parliamentary session scheduled for October. The proposed changes include expanding the act's regulatory scope, governance mechanisms, functions, and enforcement provisions. Amendments will specifically address the membership structure of Finas Corporation Members to include experienced local film industry professionals. The revisions aim to ensure members possess excellent achievement records in local film and credibility in advocating for industry welfare. Key terminology updates are also proposed to align with technological advancements, including redefining terms like 'film', 'film production', and 'film distribution'. New interpretations will be introduced for 'application' and 'content application service' to modernize the legal framework. The amendments seek to enhance Finas' functions in archiving and international promotional activities for local films. Enforcement improvements will focus on implementing fines and compounds related to licensing under Finas. Regarding regional cooperation, Fahmi announced the RIUH X ASEAN 2025 event scheduled for October alongside the 47th ASEAN Summit. This event will showcase musicians from Malaysia and across ASEAN member states. Fahmi described it as 'a good opportunity for us to further strengthen ties between local and foreign musicians, especially to build a spirit among ASEAN countries.' The minister's comprehensive update demonstrates the government's multi-faceted approach to creative industry development. Both music and film sectors are receiving focused attention through legislative review and regional collaboration initiatives. - Bernama

Seremban family's RM200 flag display for Merdeka competition
SEREMBAN: Jasmin Abu Hassan has turned his Taman Pinggiran Senawang residence into a spectacular display of patriotism using only RM200. The 53-year-old water company supervisor decorated his house with over 150 flags for the 'Rumah Terpaling Merdeka' competition. He received assistance from his wife Rosmaini Mohd Yusof, a 47-year-old kindergarten teacher, throughout the two-week decoration process. Jasmin explained how this year's effort surpassed his previous attempts at festive decoration. 'Last year I only hung flags, but this time I added a special touch by including extra decorations,' he stated. The additional elements included the Negeri Sembilan state flag and portraits of national leaders displayed at his house entrance. 'This year is livelier because there are winners every week,' Jasmin commented about the enhanced competition format. He noted that the decorations have become more creative compared to previous years. 'The children are excited to help,' Jasmin added about family participation in the project. He proudly displayed portraits of all Malaysian Prime Ministers from the first to the current leader. Jasmin achieved the overall runner-up position in last year's competition. The father of six has resided in the neighborhood for twenty-five years. Approximately forty percent of his decorations remain incomplete before the month-end deadline. Taman Pinggiran Senawang Neighbourhood Watch chairman Fadzil Sharil expressed satisfaction with the competition's growth. The 59-year-old chairman noted the event now enters its second successful year. 'We have received growing response, with more than 80 per cent of residents participating,' Fadzil revealed. He observed that participants showcase greater creativity in decorating their homes compared to last year. 'So far, we already have four weekly winners,' the chairman told reporters. Although the prizes are modest medals, hampers and daily necessities, Fadzil praised participants' extraordinary spirit. 'Every week new elements are added, making the neighbourhood livelier,' he remarked. Twenty best-decorated houses will advance to the finals scheduled for September 6. The competition features four judging categories: cheerfulness, arrangement, creativity and neatness. The neighbourhood watch committee has also created a national landmark replica for the celebrations. They constructed miniature KLCC towers using 500 recycled bottles and PVC pipes. This community project forms part of the broader National Month decorations throughout the area. - Bernama
