Why Viktor Gyokeres isn't playing for Sweden against Hungary and Algeria

Metroa day ago

Viktor Gyokeres suffered a 'minor injury' ahead of Sweden's matches against Hungary and Algeria and will be playing no part in either international friendly.
The 26-year-old striker enjoyed a largely injury-free season at club level with Sporting, missing just one match as his side successfully defended their Primeira Liga title.
It was Gyokeres' exploits in front of goal that helped steer Sporting to a domestic double, with the forward netting 54 times in 52 games across a phenomenal second year in Lisbon.
Gyokeres' extraordinary numbers have naturally attracted the attentions of some of the biggest teams in Europe, with the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Napoli all linked this summer.
However, Arsenal have emerged as the favourites to secure Gyokeres' services having held initial discussions with the Swede's agent in Portugal last month.

But Arsenal fans tuning in to watch Gyokeres versus Hungary in Budapest this evening will likely be disappointed given the prolific attacker left Sweden's training camp with an unspecified injury earlier in the week.
The former Coventry City man will also miss his country's clash with Algeria at Stockholm's Strawberry Arena next Tuesday.
'He will leave the squad after dialogue with the national team's medical team,' a statement from the Swedish FA read on Tuesday.
'He needs to rehabilitate a minor injury and is therefore not available for the upcoming international matches against Hungary and Algeria.
The friendly against Algeria represents the last chance for Sweden to fine-tune their preparations ahead of their opening World Cup qualifying match against Slovenia on September 5.
Gyokeres and Co also come up against Kosovo and Switzerland in Group B.
There have been some suggestions on social media that Gyokeres may have made himself unavailable for the double-header in order to stay fully fit ahead of a possible transfer move.
But Sweden head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson vehemently denied these rumours, stating: 'No! He felt a small injury and our medical team was already aware of it and we decided, together, to release him.
'I spoke to Viktor last week. He hasn't trained much in the last few weeks and was feeling some discomfort because of a small injury.
'I was happy to see him and have him with us in this training camp. It says a lot about Viktor, how much he wants to get involved.'
With speculation and gossip swirling over his future, Gyokeres insists he is still yet to make a decision regarding his possible next steps.
'We will see… nobody knows anything yet,' Gyokeres said on the Flymoduspod podcast earlier this week.
'I wish I had a more fun answer, but that's all I can say for now.'
It's understood Sporting are now resigned to losing Gyokeres in the summer transfer market and will be holding out for a fee in the region of £60million for their prized possession.
Gyokeres' current contract in the Portuguese capital runs through to June 2028. More Trending
'He is very happy here,' Sporting head coach Rui Borges told reporters when asked for an update on Gyokeres as they celebrated winning the Primeira Liga title.
'He is very connected to the game, he wants to score and he is obsessed with it.
'He is the best striker in Europe, as the numbers show,' Borges added.
'He will be attractive, but I believe that if he doesn't leave Sporting, he will remain very committed to the club. He feels very happy here.'

Michael O'Neill takes positives from Northern Ireland's narrow defeat to Denmark

Michael O'Neill saw plenty of positives to take from Northern Ireland's 2-1 friendly defeat to Denmark as he kept his sights firmly on the World Cup qualifying campaign that starts in September. Christian Eriksen's second-half strike completed a come-from-behind win for the Danes as Northern Ireland suffered a second straight defeat after March's 5-1 loss to Sweden. But Saturday's match was not about the result for O'Neill, who wanted to give his young squad another tough test away to top-level opposition with a trip to Germany looming after they open their qualifying campaign in Luxembourg. From that point of view there was plenty for Northern Ireland to be happy with. After taking the lead through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's early own goal, O'Neill's men did not allow Denmark a shot on target until Gustav Isaksen's fine strike in first-half stoppage time. Thank you for your support here in Denmark and back at home 👏🏻💚🤍 #GAWA — Northern Ireland (@NorthernIreland) June 7, 2025 However, Northern Ireland did not do enough going the other way, and ended the match not registering a shot on target themselves. 'I thought it was a game that wasn't really played like a friendly game,' O'Neill said. 'I thought it had a little bit of an edge to it, which was good. 'We couldn't have got off to a better start. I thought we started the game very well and obviously we get ahead. I thought we thought we defended really well in the first half, we knew we'd have to defend our box well. 'It was a bit of individual brilliance from Isaksen that gives them the equaliser before half-time so half-time has a little bit of a different feel… What a start for Northern Ireland! ⚽ Shea Charles arrives at the back post to head into the net 🎯 #BBCFootball — BBC SPORT NI (@BBCSPORTNI) June 7, 2025 'We lost the second goal but then I thought we really dug in.' Denmark, ranked 50 places above Northern Ireland, had a huge edge in quality and experience and that was what eventually told. But O'Neill recognises there is still more they can do to make themselves competitive. 'We were never going to be a dominant possession-based team against any of these teams,' O'Neill added. 'We're asking players who play their football at League One or Championship level to go out against players from the top five leagues in Europe. 'The way we have to try to close that gap is to be what we are, a team that's well-organised, well-structured, difficult to beat, that comes to frustrate the opposition, but obviously to carry a threat as well. The best no matter the result 👏🏻🟢⚪️ #GAWA — Northern Ireland (@NorthernIreland) June 7, 2025 'There's no shame in coming here and losing the game 2-1, not at all. But in terms of where we need to get to as a team, we need to be able to retain the ball a little bit better, maybe find a little bit more in terms of level of possession and that will help us carry a bigger threat.' The scoreline would have finished more strongly in Denmark's favour were it not for a number of saves made by 19-year-old goalkeeper Pierce Charles, who came on at half-time in place of Conor Hazard who was hurt in a first-half collision with Rasmus Hojlund. 'It's not an easy situation for young Pierce coming in and playing but I thought he dealt with it well,' O'Neill said. 'He's a very good young goalkeeper. You're defending your box at that point in time but the game gets a bit stretched, we're physically tired in the game. But it's important you keep the game at 2-1 because that's how you may get an opportunity.'

England booed after unimpressive 1-0 win against Andorra in World Cup qualifier

England won Saturday's World Cup qualifier match against Andorra 1-0, facing boos at the end of both halves for a seemingly unimpressive performance. This was Thomas Tuchel's first away game in charge of the national team and the German coach had called for relentlessness and patience as they faced off against their opponents, ranked 173rd in FIFA's standings. An absence of goals in the first half, jeers from their own supporters in the stands, and some fans making an early exit seemed to fail to deliver on either. This was the third time England have failed to score a first-half goal against Andorra in Barcelona, where the minnows kept out Steve McClaren's side in 2007 and Fabio Capello's team the following year. Harry Kane scored the winning goal for England early in the second half, but the team lost momentum and failed to add to that total. 'I am not happy with the performance, of course,' German coach Tuchel said on ITV1. 'We started quite well in the first 20-25 minutes, which was the only part where I had the feeling it was only a matter of time, we created a lot of half-chances and from set-pieces, that we will score and keep on going. 'But we lost completely the momentum and couldn't get it back through the whole of the first half. 'We got a little bit of it back in the first 15 minutes of the second half and then ended up in a period which was by far not good enough – lack of urgency, lack of quality and lack of energy. 'We have to play until the 93rd minute. I didn't like the lack of urgency in the end,' he said. 'It did not match the occasion at all, it is still a qualifier away from home, I didn't like it at all." Speaking after the match, England captain Harry Kane accepted it 'wasn't the greatest performance." The Bayern Munich forward added: 'I don't think many people will remember this one but we can learn from it. 'It is very hot here, a dry pitch, probably similar conditions to maybe next year at the World Cup, so we will go away and analyse." Football commentator and former player and coach Roy Keane had similarly scathing words to add on England's performance. 'We try and make excuses for England with the end of the season and it's been tough on the players. 'I thought the first half was okay but when they scored the goal it felt it was job done. 'I was really disappointed with England's attitude after the goal went in. The manager can't be happy with that effort in the last half an hour. 'I felt like some of the players looked like they got bored in the last half an hour and I don't like to see that.' England play a friendly against Senegal in Nottingham on Tuesday night and Tuchel is expecting a much-improved display.
