Below is a curated list of popular Hindi television shows from the 1990s and 2000s that would be a wonderful tribute to nostalgia.
With Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi making its return to television, fans are already soaking in a deep sense of nostalgia. Season 2 will premiere on Jio Hotstar and StarPlus on July 29, at 10:30 pm. Following in its footsteps, producer Ekta Kapoor also announced the reboot of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, starting August 2 at 3:30 pm. But this is not the first time that favourite Hindi television shows have had a reboot.
Previously, shows like Sarabhai vs Sarabhai had a 'Take 2' in 2017, which aimed to capture the magic of the original. Yet another beloved sitcom, Pavitra Rishta, returned as a web series on ZEE5, titled 'Pavitra Rishta… It's Never Too Late,' with Ankita Lokhande reprising her role as Archana and Shaheer Sheikh taking over the role of Manav, previously played by Sushant Singh Rajput. Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya, CID 2 and many others premiered on various platforms. Mukesh Khanna's Shaktimaan is also in development for big-screen adaptation as a new audio series.
But fans are still eager to get a few more reboots of the most popular 90s & 2000s Hindi TV shows, as follows –
Shanti – Ek Ghar Ki Kahani, 1994
The 1990s and 2000s are counted among the golden periods for some of the most popular Hindi TV shows. Amongst them was Mandira Bedi starrer Shanti – Ek Ghar Ki Kahani, which began airing on DD National in 1994. It revolves around the story of Shanti, an aspiring journalist who uncovers the past of every character of the show while writing the biographies of Kamesh and Raj.
Just Mohabbat, 1996
Sony TV's show, directed by Tony and Deeya Singh, revolves around the life of Jai (Harsh Lunia and later Vatsal Sheth), a kid who studies at a boarding school in Dehradun away from his parents. It chronicles his growing-up years and focuses on his relationships with his family and friends, especially his friends Madhur, Roma and Sanjay and his imaginary friend Gautam (Aditya Kapadia).
Son Pari, 2000
The children's fantasy drama, featuring Tanvi Hegde as Frooty, Mrinal Kulkarni as Son Pari and Ashok Lokhande as Altamash, Altu, was one of the most favourite shows aired on Star Plus. It follows the story of a young girl and her magical ball, which, when rubbed, summons a fairy and her friend.
Ssshhhh…Koi Hai, 2001
The horror thriller series aired on Star Plus featured an array of stories in different episodes of the show. From a group of friends encountering a werewolf in a guesthouse while on a hunting trip to a writer whose stories come true after using a magical typewriter, the fictional tales were enough to give a spine-tingling chill.
Kumkum – Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan, 2002
Star Plus' serial featured Hussain Kuwajerwala as Sumit Wadhwa and Juhi Parmar as Kumkum Sumit Wadhwa in the lead. The soap tells various stories of the Wadhwa family and its daughter-in-law, Kumkum, over a long period.
Kahiin to Hoga, 2003
The romantic soap opera starred Aamna Sharif, Rajeev Khandelwal and Gurpreet Singh in the lead. Based on the 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the show left everyone swooning with the characters' on-screen chemistry.
Shararat – Thoda Jaadu, Thodi Nazaakat, 2003
Farida Jalal, Shruti Seth and Mahesh Thakur's fantasy drama was loosely based on the American teen sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch. It revolves around the story of Jiya, the great-great-great-great-granddaughter of Rani Devi and their mischievous actions.
Shakalaka Boom Boom, 2004
Another favourite children's fantasy television drama was Shaka Laka Boom Boom. Written and directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the film tells the story of Sanju, an ordinary, courageous and compassionate boy who possesses a magical pencil with the power to bring to life the sketches it creates.
Dill Mill Gayye, 2007
The medical drama television series, which aired on Star One, focused on a new generation of interns, with the main plot revolving around beautiful love stories. The sequel to the Star Plus series Sanjivani: A Medical Boon featured Karan Singh Grover and Dr Riddhima Gupta, who was later replaced by Sukirti Kandpal and then Jennifer Winget in the lead.
Apart from the list above, there is a series of other television shows, including Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin, Balika Vadhu, Miley Jab Hum Tum, Aahat, Na Aana Is Des Laado, Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli, Astitva…Ek Prem Kahani, Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo, Sapna Babul Ka… Bidaai, Karishma ka Karishma and many others, which fans are eagerly waiting for a reboot.
