Friend of man who fell over outfield wall during Pirates game at PNC Park charged with buying him alcohol
The friend of the man who fell from the outfield stands at PNC Park during a Pittsburgh Pirates game last month has been charged with providing him alcohol at the game, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Ethan Kirkwood, 21, reportedly told investigators that he bought two beers for his friend, 20-year-old Kavan Markwood, during the Pirates' game against the Chicago Cubs last month. Kirkwood is now facing two misdemeanor counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor, according to the Post-Gazette.
Markwood jumped up to celebrate a hit during the seventh inning of the April 30 game, and he ended up falling over the outfield railing and down more than 20 feet to the warning track at PNC Park. He remained motionless for several minutes while players and officials realized what had happened.
He was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital. Markwood suffered injuries to his skull, spine, lungs, ribs and brain. He has since made 'remarkable progress' and has been moved out of the intensive care unit. He is able to stand, walk and respond to questions, and he has started therapy for his brain injury.
Security footage from the stadium, according to the report, showed Kirkwood buying two 24-ounce Miller Lites before the game's first pitch. He was carded when he made the purchase, but footage later showed Kirkwood and Markwood with one beer each after Kirkwood walked away from the kiosk with both of them. About an hour later, per the report, Kirkwood was seen walking back to purchase two more beers.
Footage from behind Markwood's seat showed him shirtless and visibly energized right before the incident. At one point, he was reportedly seen taking his shirt off and pouring beer on himself, and he landed with much of his bodyweight on the railing after jumping up to celebrate the hit — which is what prompted him to lose his balance and fall forward.
Kirkwood has been charged with minor drinking violations in the past, per the report, first at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2022 and again in 2023 at Slippery Rock University. He pleaded guilty to both sets of charges. Markwood is a former first-team all-conference football player at South Allegheny High School, and he spent time on a pair of Division II rosters.

MLB Makes Historic Andrew McCutchen Announcement on Wednesday
MLB Makes Historic Andrew McCutchen Announcement on Wednesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Throughout his 17-year career, outfielder Andrew McCutchen has proven to be a special player, earning five All-Star appearances, four Silver Slugger awards, one Gold Glove and the 2013 National League MVP award. Advertisement Of course, he is mostly known for his two stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, spanning from 2009 to 2017 and 2023 to 2025, where he has established himself as one of the most well-known players in franchise history. Now, after all these years, he continues to etch himself into the team's history, and during the Pirates' game against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday, he hit his 241st home run with Pittsburgh and 325th in his career. That's a lot for anyone to reach with one team and the MLB commemorated it with its own social media post, while also revealing he passed the legendary Roberto Clemente (240) for the third-most in franchise history. Clemente, who spent all 18 years of his career with the Pirates, made the All-Star Game 15 times while earning 12 Gold Gloves and sits in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He is one of the most decorated players in MLB history. Advertisement It will remain to be seen if McCutchen has enough left in the tank to continue to rise up the board, as he still sits behind Ralph Kiner (1946 to 1953) at 301 and Willie Stargell (1962 to 1982) at 475. That could certainly seem like a difficult task, considering McCutchen is 38 years old and is set to become a free agent when the season concludes. Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Either way, though, it's a fun bright spot in what has otherwise been a disappointing season for the Pirates, as they sported a 27-41 record going into their Wednesday matchup, putting them in last place in the NL Central. Twins claim lefty Joey Wentz off waivers from Pirates
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins claimed left-handed pitcher Joey Wentz off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, adding a reinforcement for their injury-thinned staff. The 27-year-old Wentz had a 4.15 ERA in 19 relief appearances this season for the Pirates, with 11 walks and 22 strikeouts in 26 innings. Wentz was designated for assignment or release on Saturday by the Pirates, who claimed him off waivers last September from the Detroit Tigers. He had a 4.68 ERA over a career-high 46 games between the Tigers and Pirates in 2024. Wentz, who made 26 starts over his first two major league seasons with the Tigers, will give the Twins a second lefty next to Danny Coulombe and additional depth for a bullpen that could be strained in the coming weeks in light of shoulder injuries last week that took out two members of the rotation, Pablo López and Zebby Matthews. To make room on the 40-man roster for Wentz, the Twins transferred López to the 60-day injured list. ___ AP MLB:
