Dehydration And Desk Jobs: Urologist Explains What's Causing Kidney Stones In The Young
Due to the demands of modern jobs and a change in lifestyle and dietary habits, Gen Z and millennials are reporting more cases of kidney stones.
Kidney stones were once considered a middle-aged health concern. However, in recent times, an increasing number of young adults in their 20s and 30s are walking into clinics with symptoms of renal colic. Experts believe that the reason behind this is a concerning mix of dehydration, modern diets, poor gut health, and lifestyle stressors.
'Young people are now getting kidney stones much more commonly, and the most common reason is dehydration," says Dr. Anil Kumar Varshney, Senior Director of Urology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi. 'They're consuming sodas, energy drinks, sugary beverages, tea and coffee – all of which lead to concentrated urine and increased risk of stone formation."
A Sedentary Lifestyle And A Poor Diet
Modern work culture, marked by long hours at desks and target-driven pressure, has created a perfect storm. A sedentary routine coupled with frequent consumption of processed foods, animal proteins and high-sodium meals increases calcium and uric acid in urine, a known contributor to stone formation.
'It's a lifestyle issue," notes Dr. Varshney. 'Obesity, which is rising among the youth, also results in higher excretion of calcium, uric acid and oxalates, fuelling stone formation."
Healthy Foods, Hidden Risks
'Young people are eating more salads, but foods like spinach and beetroot are rich in oxalates," explains Dr. Varshney. 'If the diet is also low in calcium, the body absorbs even more oxalates, increasing the risk."
Supplements And Global Warming: Unlikely Culprits
The overuse of supplements, especially calcium, protein powders, and vitamin C, can contribute to stone formation as well. Meanwhile, rising temperatures due to climate change lead to insensible fluid loss, particularly in North and Northwest India. 'Whether working indoors or outdoors, young people are not drinking enough water. Concentrated urine leads to saturation, and that's where stones form," says Dr. Varshney.
Dr. Varshney urges lifestyle corrections:

Create health awareness to curb future medical expenses: Andhra CM to officials
Amaravati, Jul 23 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday warned that future healthcare expenses could become an exorbitant financial burden, and directed officials to raise awareness about the importance of health. Reviewing the Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department, Naidu said people must also be educated on the dietary changes needed to lead healthier lives. 'As there is the danger of future healthcare expenses becoming exorbitant financial burdens, there is a need to undertake widespread awareness campaigns on health to address them," said Naidu. Highlighting the potential link between 'poor dietary habits and diseases like cancer", the chief minister stressed the need to promote pesticide-free, organic food, and asked officials to educate the public accordingly. According to Naidu, there is a need to raise awareness among people on protecting their health to reduce healthcare expenditure. Likewise, he directed officials to create an action plan to prevent illnesses, in addition to providing better healthcare services. Naidu also instructed officials to prepare the action plan after taking people's food habits into account, while also encouraging the consumption of organic food. In addition to promoting yoga widely among the masses, Naidu directed officials to strengthen traditional healthcare systems such as naturopathy, homeopathy, Ayurveda, and Unani. Naidu claimed that C-section (caesarean) deliveries are 'increasing even when not medically necessary", and added that 'practising yoga could help avoid surgery and promote normal deliveries." Also, he instructed officials to make yoga and meditation a part of everyone's daily life, among other directives. Son Of British Couple Held In Afghanistan Fears For Their Lives; Taliban Assures Medical Care
Last Updated: Following their arrest, the couple was initially held at Pul-e-Charkhi prison. The fate of an elderly couple imprisoned in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime remains uncertain. Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie, 76, have been detained for over six months. Despite repeated appeals from their children and the UK government, the Taliban maintains that the formalities for their release are still incomplete. The couple was arrested in early February from their home in Bamiyan province, located in central Afghanistan. The exact reason for their detention has not been officially confirmed. Peter and Barbie Reynolds had been running educational training programs in Afghanistan for 18 years and chose to remain in the country even after the Taliban's return to power in 2021. A source familiar with the case told AFP in April that their arrest may have been linked to their possession of several non-Islamic books. Following their arrest, the couple was initially held at Pul-e-Charkhi prison, where they were allowed to contact their children. They were later transferred to the General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI), with the promise that they would be released within a day or two. However, that promise has not been fulfilled. Their son, Jonathan Reynolds, recently expressed his growing fears in an interview with the BBC. The couple last contacted their family on June 15. According to Jonathan, their health is deteriorating rapidly, and the continued detention could be fatal. He emphasised the urgent need for their release and proper medical attention. The family has previously stated that a remote medical assessment indicated Peter may have suffered a heart attack or silent stroke. There are also concerns that his skin cancer could have returned, requiring immediate treatment. Barbie is reportedly experiencing numbness in her feet, which may be a sign of anaemia. Officials from the UK Foreign Office are in contact with the Taliban to expedite the release process. Meanwhile, UN officials have condemned the couple's detention, warning that they could suffer 'irreparable harm or even death" if denied timely medical care. 'The psychological toll on their health from not knowing why they are being held or when they will be released is cruel treatment," said UN experts. In response, the Taliban has claimed that the couple is being treated well. 'All their human rights are being respected. They are receiving medical care," Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi stated at a recent press conference. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Starvation Knocking On Every Door In Gaza': UN Chief On Israel's 'Horror' Blockade
Last Updated: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of severe starvation in Gaza, calling it a "horror show." United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered a stark warning to the Security Council, asserting that 'starvation is knocking on every door" in Gaza as he described the ongoing crisis in the besieged enclave as a 'horror show." Antonio Guterres said, 'We need look no further than the horror show in Gaza. In the level of death and destruction without parallel in recent times. Malnourishment is soaring. Starvation is knocking on every door. Now we are seeing the last gasp of a humanitarian system built on humanitarian principles." The Secretary-General said the UN's humanitarian system is being 'denied the conditions to function" in Gaza, citing lack of access, safety and space to operate. He noted that the Israeli military's expanding operations, particularly in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, are compounding an already catastrophic situation. 'Devastation is being layered upon devastation," he said, condemning repeated strikes on UN facilities in Gaza, including buildings used by the United Nations Office for Project Services and the World Health Organization. He said, 'These premises are inviolable and must be protected under international humanitarian law without exception." The warning came as the humanitarian situation in Gaza rapidly deteriorated. According to the Palestinian health ministry, at least 10 people have died from starvation in the past 24 hours alone. Dr. Munir al-Boursh, director-general of the ministry, wrote on X (formerly Twitter), 'The death toll from famine and malnutrition is rising at an alarming rate. These are not just numbers- they are cries for help, a human plea urging the world to act before it's too late." In a coordinated appeal, more than 100 international humanitarian organizations issued a joint letter to the Israeli government, urging an immediate end to its blockade of Gaza. As per the statement, sufficient food, water and medical aid are available and ready for delivery but remain stuck due to Israeli restrictions. 'Just outside Gaza, in warehouses and even within Gaza itself tons of food, clean water, medical supplies, shelter items and fuel sit untouched with humanitarian organisations blocked from accessing or delivering them," the statement read, adding, 'The Government of Israel's restrictions, delays and fragmentation under its total siege have created chaos, starvation, and death." view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 20:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
