Jadeja was in striking distance of his individual hundred and even after Stokes insistence on shaking the hands, the all-rounder maintained, "I can't do anything". The writing was on the wall but it was India's time to have some fun after a long grind. And they did as both Jadeja and Sundar scored their respective hundreds and then finally the shake hands happened.
In the backyard of the team which hates the D word, Shubman Gill and Co's great escape - a fighting draw - at Old Trafford will taste as sweet as a comprehensive W.
Five hard fought sessions and four fantastic knocks later, the visitors not only stay alive in the series but will have their tails up going into a mouth-watering finale at The Oval next week. The Manchester Test was nowhere close to India's reach at the half-way mark but the last two days saw them stage an extraordinary fightback with the bat to enforce the draw.

Bowling was flat, tactics were flatter and the start with the bat on Day 4 pushed them further back but the response from KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja deserves a lot of credit.
For a side which was reduced to 0/2 in the first over of their second essay to lose only two more in the remaining 143 overs, is an insane effort and frustrated England for five long sessions, and forced them to settle for only their second draw under the combination of captain Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum.

They tried everything in and out of the book to make an inroad but nothing worked. It was the right-handed pair of Gill and Rahul on Day 4 before the lefties Sundar and Jadeja stood like a rock on the final day of the Test.
It was a reflection of their match temperament, game awareness and the gumption to bat out time against an opposition which just hates to settle for a draw in the whites.
These were individual batting masterclasses stitched together in two daddy stands but something which the dressing room desperately needed after ending up on the wrong side of the 2-1 scoreline post the Lord's Test. They haven't been outplayed or outsmarted in the series so far but the inability to close out the small moments, which have had a big say in the match, have hurt them.

While they are still far from an ideal Playing XI - mostly due to injuries and availability issues - but the exhibition of grit in the last two days in overcast Manchester will do their confidence a world of good. A lot was said about Gill's success overseas but here is after four Tests sitting with four hundreds next to his name and a tally of 732 runs. The two failures in Lord's and in Manchester first innings got the tongues to wag again but he shut the traps for good with a statement ton which is arguably his finest till date.
Captaincy pressure, questions on tactics, scorecard reading 0/2 but the youngster quite literally shut the outside noise and put in an old-fashioned grind to set the base for batters to follow. There were nervy moments, a couple of drop catches, blows to the body but it was all worth it as it allowed his side to have the only favourable result at that stage.
There was a tricky period after the wickets of Rahul and Gill in the first session but the response from Sundar and Jadeja was as compact as India would have liked.
Jadeja made the early life count and used all his experience to counter whatever was thrown at him. Four fifties, one hundred and it has been a phenomenal series with the bat for Jadeja and he has been the crisis man for India lower down the order.
A victory was out of the picture the moment they dished out an ordinary effort with the ball and it was all about saving the game from there on. With Jadeja behind the wheel on the final day, not only did they fashion that but also did something which not many expected this side, undergoing transition under a 25-year-old captain, to do - stay alive after four Day 5 finishes.

Agency: PTI Manchester, Jul 27 (PTI) Gautam Gambhir wants his players to make their own history rather than following anyone from the past including the India head coach himself. And, after a memorable comeback in the Manchester Test, they are moving in that direction. A 188-run stand between captain Shubman Gill and K L Rahul kept India in the fourth Test against England before Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja earned a spirited draw for the visitors with an unbeaten 203-run alliance. Asked whether Gambhir gave a pep talk to the players after day four and made a reference to his match-saving 137 in Napier back in 2009, Gambhir responded in the negative. 'Look, the first thing is that I don't remember any of my knocks, that has become history. I think they should make their own history. Honestly, no one in this team will follow anyone or want to follow. They should make their own history. 'They want to fight for the common man back home. And the important thing is that the way a lot of people had written us off in this Test match, this is the foundation of this team. 'These are characters who are sitting in this dressing room, wanting to fight for the country and they will continue to do that," said the head coach. Managing a draw from the brink of defeat would give India a psychological edge over the hosts in the fifth and final Test in London, felt Gambhir. 'It will. Because when you see, when you're put under the pressure, when you're put under the pump and you end up adding five sessions, I think that's a great character. And anything that you do in these conditions, when you're put under pressure and you come out of those pressure moments, it is always a great feeling. 'And it just ends up giving a lot of confidence in the dressing room as well. And I'm sure, I think going into Oval, I think we will be high on confidence, but we can't take anything for granted," he said. Under new captain Gill, the team is going through a transition but Gambhir doesn't see it that way. Considering the inexperience in the side, the squad has done well especially Gill who racked up his fourth hundred of the series on Sunday. 'Good you used that word transition but I don't see it like that because it is still an Indian team. This is the best 18 that is going to represent. It is only experience and inexperience. 'And that is how we see this. But the most important thing is that these guys got to learn a lot from what they did today. 'Because being under pressure, batting five sessions is never easy on day five of the Test against an attack like England. And then coming out with a draw and only losing four wickets…," he said. Generations will talk about what Pant did for this team: Gautam Gambhir
Manchester, Jul 27 (PTI) Head coach Gautam Gambhir on Sunday said the character and foundation of the current Indian team will be built on the remarkable act of courage from Rishabh Pant, who batted in the first innings of the fourth Test with a broken right foot. Pant added crucial first innings runs for the team despite batting with a fractured foot after missing a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes on day one. He managed to get a half-century, helping India post 358 on day two. Pant was not required to bat in the second innings as Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar guided India to a morale-boosting draw with a century each to keep the series alive. 'Rishabh already, it's been declared that he's out of the series. And one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on what Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well," said Gambhir in the post-match media interaction. 'Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot. Not many people have done that in the past. And he had put his hand up, and that is why I say any amount of praise… 'I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations to come forward will talk about this. And generations coming forward should talk about it, that there is someone who has batted with a broken foot. And it's unfortunate because of the kind of form he was in. 'But again, he's an important member of the Test side. And I hope he recovers quickly and comes back quickly and try and deliver a game for us," said the former India batter. India draw after last-day fightback, coach Gambhir says ‘these players will make their own history'
The day was ending, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar were in their 80s and there was no doubt about the result of the Test. India had miraculously managed to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat on the final day of the fourth Test. The knackered England captain Ben Stokes had enough, he wanted to shake hands and nurse his wounds in the dressing room. But the day's heroes — Jadeja and Washington — were in no hurry to leave. They wanted to rub a few English noses in the mud and get well-deserved Test hundreds. They also wanted the crowd, and their teammates, to celebrate the draw that was as precious as a win. They finally shook hands with the scoreboard showing India 425 for four, Jadeja (107 not out) and Washington (101 not out). The world had written them off, now Jadeja and Sundar had done a monumental rewrite, they had penned history. Only twice have India batted out more overs in the third innings to save a Test after conceding a first innings lead of 300-plus. Trailing by 311 runs at lunch on Day 4, India were staring at an innings defeat. But against all odds, Shubman Gill's young team batted for 143 overs and lost just four wickets. This was a comeback for ages. The series that seemed dead — the loss for India here would have seen England take a 3-1 lead — has been magically kept alive. With momentum on their side, India can now dream of winning the final Test at Oval and level the series 2-2. Nothing can be put beyond a team where a batsman with a fractured foot — Rishabh Pant — raises his hand to take the field and do his bit. Indian coach Gautam Gambhir, after the match, spoke about the importance of the draw for the rest of the series. 'It will give us an edge. When you are put under pressure and you come out of those pressure moments, it is always a great feeling. It just ends up giving a lot of confidence to the dressing room,' he said. Unlike many teams of the past, with bigger stars, this Indian team just refuses to give up. India was zero for two at the start of the innings but this was followed by 188-run partnership between K L Rahul (90) and Shubman (103). Today again at lunch, a crisis loomed. The two big hopes Shubman and Rahul, after their marathon partnership, were back in the hut. India was 223 for four. There was another mountain to climb in front of them. With Pant to bat on one foot, they had to bat two full sessions. That's when two rather low-key cricketers — all-rounders who aren't in news too often — picked up the baton; it was more like taking up the gauntlet. But Jadeja and Sundar didn't allow the pressure of the scoreboard or their constantly bullying rivals get to them. Stokes tried every trick he knew. He would test them with a disciplined line, he would surround them with fielders with the spinner on a pitch with patches and even try to intimidate with short-balls. Nothing worked on this Sunday. There is a certain nonchalance about the way Jadeja and Washington conduct themselves on the pitch. They look relaxed, they keep smiling and are almost aloof to the surroundings and the situation. They don't even confront the opposition. They actually chat them up. They don't rile their opponent, they don't trigger fights. Jadeja and Washington, with their solid play, dilute the opposition's aggression. Jadeja, despite his numbers, isn't quite counted among the game's greats but today he joined the list of legends. Washington's place in the playing XI has been repeatedly questioned but today he shut the mouths of his doubters for good. As Jadeja added a hundred to his four 50s on this tour he was on par with the greatest all-rounder Gary Sobers for runs scored in England. Washington, the spinner, had done his bit at Lord's with four wickets in an innings. At Old Trafford, he showed what he can do with the bat. He justified the team management's trust in him. His numbers with both bat and ball showed, he can do the job of two specialists. This could well go down in the history of the Indian team as a very important draw. Had India lost this Test, and also the next, the course of Indian cricket might have changed dramatically. There were reputations at stake. After Shubman's outburst against Zak Crawley at Lord's when he was wasting time, the English media was floating the narrative the young skipper had been impacted by the episode and lost touch. When India was on field and their bowlers were leaking runs, the pundits said the Indian captain was too passive. It was certainly his worst day as a captain but he showed the resilience to bounce back. He made amends, he led India's recovery. The team's senior-most batsman Rahul also often gets blamed for not scoring in important situations. At Old Trafford, he changed that impression. Coach Gambhir would have lost his third straight series, and there would have been calls of his outster. But after Old Trafford, that might not be. This team is showing a new culture and character. But what might have pleased the team management most must have been India regrouping after the fall of Rahul and Shubman. Most of India's famous wins or draws have been about individual brilliance but this team takes cricket as a team sport. The last time India saved a game after conceding a big lead was in New Zealand at Napier where Gambhir had scored a match-saving 137 off 437 balls while batting for nearly 11 hours. He was asked if he had spoken about Napier in the dressing room. Gambhir almost didn't allow the question to be completed. He said: 'I don't remember any of my knocks, it's history. These players will make their own history. Honestly, no one needs to follow anyone or even wants to. They will make their own history. The way we have been written off in this Test match, this is the foundation of this team.' Before the tour had started, this was said to be a team in transition but a win of this nature makes it feel that the transition is over.
