Rupee plunges 48 paise to close at 87.66 against US dollar

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Mumbai, Aug 4 (PTI) The rupee depreciated 48 paise to close at 87.66 against the US dollar on Monday, as sustained foreign fund outflows and trade tariff uncertainties dented investors' sentiment. Forex traders said US President Donald Trump's tariffs triggered fresh concerns over a much wider disruption in the global trade landscape. The domestic currency declined during the day on demand for dollars from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 87.21 against the greenback, touching an intra-day low of 87.73 against the American currency. At the end of Monday's trading session, the domestic unit was at 87.66, down by 48 paise over its previous close. On Friday, the rupee recovered sharply and ended 47 paise higher at 87.18 against the US dollar. 'We expect the rupee to remain weak amid uncertainty over India-US trade deal and FII outflows. However, weakness in the US dollar amid chatter over rate cut expectations in the US amid weak economic data may support the rupee at lower levels," said Anuj Choudhary – Research Analyst, commodities and currencies, Mirae Asset Sharekhan. The RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra-headed rate-setting panel on Monday started the three-day deliberations to decide the next bi-monthly monetary policy. The six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is scheduled to announce the next bi-monthly policy rate on Wednesday (August 6). Meanwhile, Brent crude prices fell 1.06 per cent to USD 68.93 per barrel in futures trade, as OPEC+ agreed for a production hike in September this year, while concerns over a cooling US economy and trade tariffs also weighed. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell by 0.37 per cent to 98.77. Dilip Parmar, Senior Research Analyst, HDFC Securities, said: 'The Indian rupee has weakened primarily due to foreign fund outflows and liquidity adjustments by the Reserve Bank of India following the maturity of a USD 5 billion USD/INR swap." The RBI on Monday returned USD 5 billion to banks as part of a forex swap deal. Parmar said the forward premium rates also jumped to reflect the potential interest rate differential between the US and India after Friday's jobs data. 'The US dollar fell on Friday amid disappointing economic data from the US. According to the non-farm payrolls report, the US added 74,000 jobs in July 2025 vs forecast of 106,000 jobs. The June data was also revised lower unexpectedly to 14,000 vs initial projection of 147,000 jobs," Choudhary said. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 418.81 points, or 0.52 per cent, to close at 81,018.72, while the Nifty rose 157.40 points, or 0.64 per cent, to settle at 24,722.75. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 2,566.51 crore on a net basis on Monday, according to exchange data. US-based Electric vehicle giant Tesla is preparing to open its second showroom in India—this time in the national capital. After launching in Mumbai, the company has chosen Delhi's Aerocity, a high-end commercial area near the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, for its next location. According to a report by CNBC-TV18, the new showroom is scheduled to open on August 11. This move comes shortly after Tesla introduced its Model Y in India. On the same day, Tesla also activated its official India website, which initially allowed users to register interest only from Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. First showroom in Mumbai's BKC Tesla's entry into the Indian market began with the opening of its first showroom in Maker Maxity Mall, located in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Two versions of the Model Y, imported from Tesla's Shanghai plant, are currently being showcased there. The company expects to start deliveries for the rear-wheel drive variant by the end of the third quarter. Customers opting for the long-range version can expect to receive their vehicles in the fourth quarter. F&O volumes hit 8-month high in July despite ban on Jane Street

Despite a ban on US-based high-frequency trader Jane Street, derivatives volumes in July rose 10% month-on-month, reaching an 8-month high. Analysts and experts said the increase in volumes may have been driven by proprietary and retail traders amid a spike in market volatility. In July, the combined average daily turnover (ADTV) for both exchanges stood at Rs 381 trillion, the highest since November 2024, when the initial regulatory changes were introduced to curb the frenzy in the segment. Though still far below the peak of Rs 537 trillion in September 2024, experts believe the surge signals that volumes are picking up. The rise is also notable as activity from high-frequency traders (HFTs), who are touted as 'major liquidity providers', may have cooled off amidst the ongoing probe into Jane Street. 'Because of the changing scenario or market dynamics, a lot of learning and re-learning has happened over the last one to two quarters. Market participants have adjusted to the changes, and momentum is picking up. We are in the growth phase. So, most of the leverage products could be in focus,' said Chandan Taparia, Head of Derivatives & Technical Research at Motilal Oswal. He added that the impact on volumes would be clearer once the expiry days are swapped by the exchanges in August. Meanwhile, the combined ADTV for the cash segment dropped 15% to Rs 1.02 trillion. Experts attributed the decline in cash market volumes to softness in stock prices. In July, the Nifty and Sensex both fell by 3%, while the broader Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 indices dropped 6.7% and 4%, respectively. According to the NSE Market Pulse report, the number of individual investors in equity derivatives dropped to around 3 million, down from the peak of 5.2 million in June 2024. Brokers believe the individual investor count may have risen in July, based on the ADTV trend. Market players noted that despite volatility, retail participation has been significant. 'Earlier, when there was high volatility, retail participation used to drop drastically. Now, we are witnessing that retail participation is quite buoyant in this market—despite all the concerns on losses by retail traders. There has been a surge in activity from proprietary desks also, as they seek to take advantage of the volatility,' said Kranthi Bathini, Director of Equity Strategy at WealthMills Securities. Amit Chandra, Assistant Vice President at HDFC Securities, said participation rose amid the volatility triggered by global events. 'On the last expiry on Thursday, the NSE recorded volumes of Rs 90,000 crore in premium terms—its highest. This was a function of high volatility, along with the fact that it was both a weekly and monthly expiry, and some unwinding by HFTs. This is not the new normal, but the volume has suddenly gone up due to higher implied volatility.'
