National Textile Day: A nod to textile from designers

Hindustan Times03-05-2025
There's a story behind each thread of a handcrafted weave. On National Textile Day today, designers talk about how vital textile design has become to their creative process — and why you shouldn't confuse it with fashion design.
While the two are separate aspects, textile designer Ashdeen Lilaowala finds that in this day and age, fashion and textiles are integrated into each other: 'I use both to create a cohesive product, not separate items. We use textiles to create fashion; sometimes even fashion inspires the creation of a certain textile.'
While designer Ateev Anand sees a clear distinction between the two, he tells us that the fabrics heavily inspire the way he creates clothing. 'During my creative process, I always go back to see why something was developed — that sort of sets the path for me,' he explains.
Designer Gautam Gupta agrees with this sentiment. 'Today, we see textile and fashion designers working in each other's areas for aesthetic differentiation. I create our handloom fabrics per our vision of the collection,' he shares.
Meanwhile, Anuradha Dhawan emphasises how an understanding of textiles helps further slow, sustainable fashion. 'Repurposing extends textile lifespan, in turn promoting a sustainable approach to consumption and production,' says the designer, who tells us that even discarded threads and fabric are of great value to her.
As Ateev puts it, 'We owe [our process] to the weaves; they guide our work and what we do.'
According to designer Vidhi Singhania, textile and fashion are very close but also very diverse, as one focuses on the fit, fall, and silhouettes of the garment, while the other focuses on the design, patterns and the finishing of the fabric. 'As a textile designer, 30 years of my life have gone into making a handloom product from ordinary to extraordinary. One is trying to contemporise the existing product, improve and give it a platform. So, I think my passion lies in textiles,' she explains.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he survived a stage 4 cancer battle that lasted more than a decade

Jerry Jones sometimes says too much about his Dallas Cowboys. His cancer battle for more than a decade remained a secret though. Jones told the Dallas Morning News that he beat stage 4 melanoma. The Cowboys owner's battle lasted more than a decade, he said, and included four surgeries. "I now have no tumors," Jones, who is 82 years old, told the Dallas Morning News. Jones told the Dallas Morning News the initial diagnosis came in 2010. Over the next 10 years he had four surgeries, two on his lungs and two on his lymph nodes. He credited the experimental drug PD-1 — short for Programmed Cell Death Protein 1 — for his recovery. 'I was saved by a fabulous treatment and great doctors and a real miracle [drug] called PD-1 [therapy],' Jones said, via the Morning News. 'I went into trials for that PD-1 and it has been one of the great medicines." In an episode of the soon to be released Netflix series "America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys," Jones mentioned having cancer treatments, leading the Dallas Morning News to ask him about it in an interview. Jones is the NFL's most visible owner, and his Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise in the world. They're the first sports team to pass the $10 billion mark in Forbes' annual survey. In 2017 — when, according to Jones, he was still fighting stage 4 cancer — he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Jones has no problem seeking out the media for attention on practically any matters regarding his team. But his long battle against cancer was out of the spotlight, until now.

Comcast debuts soccer-focused video package ahead of World Cup

(Reuters) -Internet and media giant Comcast launched a soccer-focused video package exclusively for its Xfinity customers on Wednesday, as it looks to attract sports fans ahead of major events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Comcast has priced the offering, called "World Soccer Ticket", at $85 a month. The bundle includes nearly 60 broadcast, cable news, and sports channels, along with a premium subscription of NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service. As cord cutting continues to hit traditional TV revenue, live sports content has emerged as one of the few formats that still draw millions of eyeballs and boost advertising demand. The package comes ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Every match of the quadrennial tournament will be available in English on Fox and in Spanish across Telemundo, Universo, and Peacock, Comcast said on Wednesday. The plan will also offer live coverage of major international leagues and competitions, including Premier League, UEFA Champions League, LaLiga, Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions Cup. Besides, the package will include live coverage of other major sports and leagues like the NFL and NBA on the package's networks and Peacock. Customers can access the package through X1 set-top box and Xfinity Stream TV app on supported platforms like Apple TV and Fire TV. Comcast's new offering is expected to drive demand for its networks like NBC and boost subscriber growth for its flagship streaming platform, Peacock, which had 41 million paid subscribers at the end of June, far fewer than rival platforms. Media companies are aggressively pursuing major sports deals to strengthen their streaming platforms. The newly merged Paramount secured exclusive U.S. broadcast rights to the Ultimate Fighting Championship for seven years in a $7.7 billion deal on Monday.
