French hotel group Accor said Canada is gaining traction as a tourist destination as travellers increasingly avoid the United States for holidays.
Canada is benefiting from this influx of travellers, chief financial officer Martine Gerow said on a call with reporters, adding that Canadians are also scaling back travel to the US.
Evidence is mounting that lucrative transatlantic travel may be at risk as European visitors avoid the US amid a larger shift in anti-American sentiment and US tourists rein in spending. Chief executive officer Sebastien Bazin warned earlier that Accor's forward hotel bookings from Europe to the US this summer are down 25%.
Arrivals of non-citizens to the US by plane dropped almost 10% in March from a year earlier, the US's International Trade Administration data shows. The pullback could cost the US economy almost US$90bil (RM389.3bil) in 2025, Goldman Sachs Group estimates.
'The good news is, if they don't go to the US they usually end up going somewhere where Accor is present,' Gerow said.
Accor reported first-quarter revenue of €1.35bil (RM6.65bil), ahead of the average analyst estimate, and confirmed its medium-term growth outlook. Demand was sustained through April and May, though visibility is limited beyond that, Gerow added.
Revenue per available room – a key measure of profitability – rose 5% in the first quarter, according to a recent statement.
Meanwhile, the Philippines is planning to issue digital nomad visas to attract foreigners who are working remotely and boost tourism.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr issued an order allowing the Department of Foreign Affairs to issue the visas valid for a maximum period of one year. Foreigners who will apply for the visas must show proof of sufficient income, and must be from a country that offers a similar visa to Philippine nationals.
The Philippines adds to countries that have offered remote work visa schemes, even with a recent push for return to offices. Foreign tourist arrivals have yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels, although tourism revenue has bounced back.
Tourism contributed 8.6% to Philippine economic output in 2023, according to government data. – Bloomberg

LyondellBasell to divest four European sites in deal with AEQUITA

KUALA LUMPUR: LyondellBasell (LYB), a leader in the global chemical industry, has entered into an agreement and exclusive negotiations with AEQUITA for the sale of select olefins and polyolefins assets and the associated business in Europe. The sites to be sold have been part of the previously announced European strategic assessment and are located in Berre (France), Münchsmünster (Germany), Carrington (United Kingdom), and Tarragona (Spain). "This contemplated transaction is a significant step in LYB's transformation to grow and upgrade our core. We are committed to operating our assets safely and reliably throughout this process and will continue to support our customers, employees and other key stakeholders. "Europe remains a core market for LYB and one we will continue to participate in following this transaction with more of a focus on value creation through establishing profitable leadership in circular and renewable solutions," said LyondellBasell chief executive officer, Peter Vanacker, in a statement. Meanwhile, AEQUITA managing partner, Christoph Himmel, said the acquisition of these assets from LYB marks another important step in expanding its industrial footprint. Each site brings a strong operational foundation and a highly experienced, committed employee base. The assets and business to be acquired by AEQUITA include integrated and non-integrated sites within LYB's European olefins and polyolefins business, as well as supporting central functions based at the company's Rotterdam headquarters and various locations. The sites together represent a scaled olefins and polyolefins platform strategically located in proximity to a longstanding customer base and with access and connectivity to key infrastructure. The agreement is a put option deed under which AEQUITA has committed to enter into an agreed form purchase agreement if LYB exercises its put option after the conclusion of certain works council consultation processes. Closing of the proposed transaction is currently expected in the first half of 2026, subject to the completion of the information and consultation processes with the relevant employee representative bodies in accordance with applicable laws, as well as regulatory and other customary closing conditions.

Indonesia allowing nickel industry abuses to go unchecked

Published on: Friday, June 06, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jun 06, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Weda Bay on Halmahera island is the world's largest nickel mine by production. (AFP pic) JAKARTA: The Indonesian government is allowing environmental damage including deforestation and violations against Indigenous people to go unchecked around a multi-billion dollar industrial park on a once-pristine eastern island, a report said today. Indonesia is both the world's largest nickel producer, and home to the biggest-known reserves, and a 2020 export ban has spurred a domestic industrial boom. Advertisement Operations have grown around Weda Bay, the world's largest nickel mine by production, on Halmahera island as Indonesia exploits the metal reserves used in everything from electric vehicle batteries to stainless steel. Climate Rights International (CRI) said companies had caused a spike in air and water pollution and deforestation around the industrial park, accusing the government of ignoring their conduct. 'The Indonesian government is giving a green light to corporate practices that prioritise profits over the rights of local communities and the environment,' Krista Shennum, researcher at Climate Rights International, told AFP. 'The Indonesian government should immediately hold companies accountable. This could include civil penalties, criminal prosecutions, or rescinding permits.' Much of the park's nickel is sourced by Weda Bay Nickel (WBN), a joint venture of Indonesian mining firm Antam and Singapore-based Strand Minerals, with shares divided between French mining giant Eramet and Chinese steel major Tsingshan. An AFP report last week detailed how the home of the nomadic Hongana Manyawa tribe was being eaten away by the world's largest nickel mine, with members issuing a call for nickel companies to leave their tribal lands alone. Locals have reported a rise in air pollution from nickel processing smelters and rivers polluted by nickel tailings in soil brought down by heavy rain. Water tests by Indonesian NGOs AEER, JATAM, and Nexus3 Foundation in 2023 and 2024 'revealed dangerously high levels of nickel and hexavalent chromium, among other pollutants', the report said. '(Companies) are failing local communities by not making information about the safety of important drinking water sources publicly available and accessible,' said Shennum. Both WBN and Eramet told AFP last week they work to minimise impacts on the environment, including conducting water tests. CRI also said Indonesian and foreign companies in coordination with police and military personnel had 'engaged in land grabbing, coercion and intimidation' of Indigenous peoples and other communities. Local activists and students opposing the industrial park have 'faced criminalisation, harassment and smear campaigns', the report said. Weda Bay Nickel and the Indonesian government did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But Indonesia's energy ministry told AFP last week it was committed to 'protecting the rights of Indigenous peoples and ensuring that mining activities do not damage their lives and environment'. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MACC moves to forfeit Daim-linked Menara Ilham

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will apply for the forfeiture of Menara Ilham, a building owned by the family of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin. This follows the MACC receiving authorisation from the deputy public prosecutor to seize the building on Jalan Binjai for a second time. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the forfeiture would be carried out under Section 55 or Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001. "We have already submitted an application under Section 51 of AMLATFPUAA (to seize the tower), and the next step will be to file an application under Section 56 or 55 of the same Act to forfeit the asset (Ilham Tower)," he said when contacted. Section 55 allows for the forfeiture of property following a conviction, while Section 56 provides for civil forfeiture without the need for prosecution or conviction. Commenting on the second seizure of Menara Ilham, Azam said it involved two different legal provisions. "Previously (the December 2023 seizure) was carried out under the MACC Act, while this time it involves the AMLATFPUAA," he said. Yesterday, the MACC announced that the seizure prohibits all dealings involving the transfer of ownership of the property. Ilham Tower, located in downtown Kuala Lumpur near the Petronas Twin Towers, houses a four-star hotel, office spaces, a gallery, and other facilities. This is not the first time the MACC has seized the 60-storey tower. In December 2023, the MACC invoked its powers to take control of the 274-metre-tall skyscraper, estimated to be worth between RM1.5 billion and RM2 billion. Sources said the tower was seized for 18 months, the longest duration granted to the MACC to date. The move was understood to be part of an investigation into a corporate transaction valued at RM2.3 billion involving publicly listed Renong Bhd and United Engineers Malaysia Bhd.
