T.N. research scholar refuses to receive degree from Governor Ravi at convocation
'Since the Governor has done nothing for Tamils and Tamil Nadu, and is working against the State, I chose to receive the degree from Dr. Chandrasekar, a scholar, and did not want to receive my degree from Mr. Ravi,' PhD scholar Jean Joseph told reporters after the convocation ceremony.

To ensure that the right degree is handed over to the right candidate at the convocation ceremony and to avoid any mix-ups, MSU has implemented the practice of distributing degree certificates to candidates before the start of the ceremony. Convocation robes are provided at separate counters. Candidates, therefore, arrive on the dais with their own degree certificates and pose for a formal photograph with the dignitaries on stage.
When Ms. Jean, who had conducted her research on 'Micro Finance' after obtaining her MBA, reached the dais with her degree certificate, she walked past Mr. Ravi and handed it to Dr. Chandrasekar, who was standing next to the Governor. Even though Dr. Chandrasekar advised her to give the certificate to the Governor, she refused, received the degree from the Vice-Chancellor, posed for a photo, and then stepped down to return to her seat.
'When I returned to my seat from the dais, a few fellow candidates around me appreciated my decision to receive the degree from the Vice-Chancellor while ignoring the Governor. I believe in the 'Dravidian Model' government, which the Governor is working against. That annoyed me, and I decided to receive the degree from the Vice-Chancellor, whom I consider the right person to do so,' said Ms. Jean, who is married to Rajan, the Nagercoil town deputy secretary of the DMK.

DMK allies to boycott governor's Independence Day reception
CHENNAI: The Congress, CPM, CPI, Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) have announced they will boycott the 'At home' reception to be hosted by Governor RN Ravi on the Independence Day. TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai, in a statement, said his party is boycotting the reception, protesting the anti-Tamil attitude of the governor, and condemning him for forwarding the Bill on Kalaignar University to the President. VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan said the party has been boycotting the reception, protesting the successive governors' activities against state autonomy and the two-language policy, besides attempting to saffronise the antiquities of Tamil Nadu. CPM state secretary P Shanmugam said ever since assuming office, Ravi has been acting against federal principles and the interests of Tamils, besides the Constitution. Even after the SC defined the powers of the governors, Ravi has continued with his stance. CPI state secretary R Mutharasan expressed similar views. MMK president MH Jawahirullah said the governor has been clashing with the popular government in TN for unnecessary reasons, and hence, the party has decided to boycott the reception.

PhD scholar ignores governor, receives certificate from V-C in Tamil Nadu
TIRUNELVELI: A research scholar of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) chose to receive her doctorate from Vice Chancellor M Chandrasekar, instead of Governor and Chancellor R N Ravi during the convocation ceremony on Wednesday. The scholar, Jean Joseph V, who is the wife of DMK's Nagercoil corporation deputy secretary M Rajan, said she did not want to receive the doctorate from the governor because 'he had not done anything for Tamil and Tamil Nadu'. The incident took place at the 32nd convocation of MSU in which the Governor, V-C, and Director of the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism AP Dimri, were to confer degrees on 109 graduates and 650 PhD scholars. When her turn came, Jean, who had been given the doctorate certificate in advance, walked past the governor, handed it to Chandrasekar, and posed with him for the photograph. Later, Jean said 'I believe in the Dravidian model. I thought why should I receive the degree from the governor who is against Tamil and Tamil Nadu. I came to know that Chandrasekar has also achieved a lot. I thought he would be the right person to receive the award from. There is no personal reason behind the refusal. "I ask our system do we not have the right persons, like the CM or the Minister for Higher Education, to confer the degree? I did not find any achievements of the governor for Tamil when I searched on Google,' she said. Her husband Rajan said the two decided well in advance not to accept the doctorate from the governor. Minister for Higher Education and pro-chancellor Govi Chezhiyaan did not attend the event. Former TN BJP president K Annamalai condemned Jean for her action.

Watch: PhD Graduate Refuses To Take Degree From Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi
TIRUNELVELI: A PhD graduate from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University refused to receive her degree from Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi during the convocation program. The event, held at the V.O.C. Auditorium on the university campus, saw TN Governor R N Ravi, who is also the university chancellor, conferring degrees on students. Of the 37,376 students from 104 affiliated colleges and the university, 759 were present to receive their degrees directly from the Governor, including 650 PhD recipients. As per the usual practice, degrees were handed to students before they went on stage, where the Governor would then personally present them. However, in a surprise move, one student, identified as Jean Joseph from Kottar, Nagercoil, bypassed the Governor and received her degree from Vice-Chancellor Chadrasekar instead. #WATCH | Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu | PhD student from MDT Hindu College refuses to receive degree from Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi (13.08) (Video Source: Manonmaniam Sundaranar University) — ANI (@ANI) August 14, 2025 Speaking to the media, Jean Joseph explained that she took the decision because she believes the Governor "has done nothing for Tamil Nadu or the Tamil language." She added, "Many others are more qualified to present degrees such as the Chief Minister or the Education Minister. It should be the student's choice from whom to receive the degree. My fellow students appreciated my decision. If it were wrong, no one would have congratulated me. I don't want to take my degree from someone who does not respect our land, language, and identity." Jean Joseph completed her at Hindu College, Nagercoil, pursued MCA at Mepco College, Sivakasi, and recently earned her PhD in Human Resource Management from Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. The incident comes against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between Governor Ravi and the ruling DMK and its allies, who have repeatedly criticised him for his controversial remarks. Notably, Jean Joseph's husband, Rajan, is the district student wing secretary of the DMK.
