Logistics sector expected to contribute RO14bn to Oman's GDP by 2040
A new report from global research and advisory company Oxford Business Group, in partnership with Oman's Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, shows that Oman's transport and logistics sector is anticipated to contribute RO14bn to the national economy by 2040, positioning the sector as the second-highest economic contributor after hydrocarbons.
As of 2023, the logistics sector contributed approximately 7% to Oman's GDP. It contributed RO1.7bn, or 6.1%, to the sultanate's GDP in the first nine months of 2024, as per the report.
According to the report titled 'Investing in Oman's Future: High-Growth Opportunities in Key Sectors,' the Omani transport and logistics sector presents wide-ranging investment opportunities. The sector, which currently provides over 79,000 jobs, is seeking to create up to 300,000 new logistics jobs by 2040.
The Oxford Business Group report covers various promising sectors and highlights the sultanate's ongoing efforts to attract investment and foster economic transformation through strategic initiatives aligned with Vision 2040.
The report explores the sultanate's advancements and opportunities in transportation and logistics, agriculture and food production, manufacturing and mining, tourism and urban development, energy, and the digital economy. It offers an in-depth analysis of Oman's drive to position itself as a global leader in green hydrogen, renewable energy and digital innovation, while leveraging its strategic location as a logistics hub connecting Asia, Africa and Europe.
The report also examines Oman's significant infrastructure projects, such as Khazaen Economic City and its advanced port systems, which aim to solidify the country's status as a vital trade and logistics centre. It outlines how initiatives like Yiti Sustainable City and Hydrom are aligning with global sustainability goals to attract environmentally conscious investments.
The report features an exclusive interview with H E Qais al Yousef, Oman's Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, who underscores the importance of strategic investments in driving the nation's transformation.
'This report underlines Oman's potential as an attractive and globally competitive investment destination. Our priorities – diversification, infrastructure promotion, re-engineering Oman's business environment, human capital development, as well as employment generation, trade enhancement, creating in-country value and digital transformation – were established with Oman Vision 2040. They are now reinforced by our net-zero emissions target in 2050 and are being realised through progressive policies,' H E Yousef said.

South Batinah mango farms strengthen Oman's food security
Barka – Mango cultivation and production projects in the wilayats of Barka and Musanaah in South Batinah governorate are vital initiatives that bolster food security, increase local production, provide promising investment opportunities, and reduce reliance on imports. These projects also have the potential for future export to foreign markets, which enhances the competitiveness of Omani products in regional and global markets. Over 80 projects within the food security portfolio are being implemented in the governorate. Their products vary, and they span vast areas across the governorate's wilayats. The projects are under the continuous supervision and follow-up of the Directorate General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in South Batinah Governorate. This is to overcome difficulties and address challenges that may arise during the implementation stages and ensure work proceeds according to the planned schedules. These projects aim to plant over 35,000 mango seedlings of various varieties on an area of 373 acres in the wilayats of Barka and Musanaah. The planting will be carried out in separate batches to ensure the highest success rates. The expected production capacity upon project completion and the start of commercial production will reach 3,382 tons annually. Eng. Amer Humood Al Shebli, Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in South Al Batinah Governorate, stated: 'The mango projects in Barka and Musanaah come within the framework of the Ministry's efforts to diversify agricultural production and enhance the national food security system. This is achieved by utilizing natural resources, adopting modern farming methods that ensure sustainable and high-quality production, and making the best use of available resources.' He also said that in the next phase, the Ministry is working to expand the introduction of new mango varieties known for their high quality and excellent productivity. It will also focus on research and development programs to improve production and enhance the efficiency of farmers and workers in this field through continuous training. The Ministry is also placing great importance on opening diverse marketing channels, whether in local markets or through agricultural exhibitions and events, to ensure the long-term continuity and viability of these projects.

SMART FARMING TRANSFORMS OMAN
Oman's agricultural sector is undergoing a significant transformation through innovation and technology, in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources is spearheading efforts to enhance food security and environmental sustainability by promoting smart farming, biotechnology, artificial intelligence and modern irrigation techniques. Smart resource management systems, vertical farming, precision agriculture and digital tools are being adopted to improve productivity, reduce waste and ensure sustainable food availability. The Ministry supports small-scale innovative projects through technical and financial assistance, while funding initiatives and awareness programmes are provided via the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund and digital platforms. Collaboration with universities, research centres and international organisations such as FAO and AOAD further strengthens these efforts. Emphasis is being placed on integrating technology in agriculture, including IoT-based smart farms, disease prediction and crop improvement. The research team developed a practical solution derived from Harmal that demonstrates high efficacy against pathogenic fungi, offering an environmentally safe option for Omani farmers. Hawra bint Rashid al Omraniyah from the University of Al Sharqiyah showcased AZDARA, a company producing organic pesticides and fertilisers in biodegradable smart soil packs. These packs nourish the soil as they decompose and include natural products derived from animal shampoo, providing safe pest control while improving animal health. Omar bin Fathil al Daree from UTAS Ibri introduced the Smart Agriculture Cultivator (SAG 1), a sensor-equipped device that analyses soil conditions in real time, measuring moisture, pH, temperature and nutrient levels. The system alerts users to issues such as salinity or nutrient deficiencies and removes impurities like stones, weeds and plastics automatically, improving both efficiency and soil health. The Ministry stressed that investing in agricultural innovation is a strategic necessity to secure a food-safe future amidst global challenges like climate change, resource scarcity and population growth. By encouraging private-sector partnerships, promoting research and supporting startup initiatives, Oman is building a resilient and sustainable agricultural framework. Through projects like smart irrigation, organic farming and biotechnology research, Oman aims to transform its food system, promote environmental stewardship and strengthen the green economy.
