VE Day 80th anniversary celebrations might be ‘last chance to thank veterans'
People are being urged to host celebrations for the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day in what might be 'our last chance to thank surviving veterans'.
May 8 marks the date in 1945 when the Allies accepted Germany's surrender in the Second World War, ending almost six years of conflict in Europe.
Community celebrations will be led by the Together Coalition, a group of businesses and individuals, as part of the UK Government's national programme to commemorate the 80th anniversaries of both VE Day in May and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day on August 15.
Events will include the Great British Food Festival on May 5, when street parties, picnics and barbecues will take place across the country on the Monday bank holiday, reflecting the celebrations that broke out across the nation 80 years ago.
There will also be a VE Day Schools Challenge, where the Together Coalition and the Royal British Legion are asking pupils to learn about the significance of the anniversary.
Launching the countdown, TV presenter and actor Ross Kemp and Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes visited Hermitage Primary School in Tower Hamlets, east London, where they shared food with the pupils and talked about the values that helped communities contribute to the war victory.
EastEnders star Kemp said: 'VE Day marks a major moment in our history – when Britain helped defeat the forces of fascism and protect our democracy.
'Taking part is an opportunity for us all to honour those who sacrificed so much, to reconnect with our neighbours and communities, and to remember the values that underpinned the victory.
'They matter as much today as they did then.
'This might be our last chance to thank the surviving veterans – so we should celebrate them in style.'
Dame Kelly said: 'Moments like this matter, they bring us together as a country and remind us of the freedoms we sometimes take for granted.
'They also give us an opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to the victory from the UK and across the Commonwealth.'

Taxi outing celebrates 77th year with water guns and plenty of ice cream
The popular Edinburgh Taxi Outing has taken place for its 77th year, providing a fun day out for children with additional needs, life-limiting conditions and terminal illnesses. Setting off from Edinburgh Zoo on Tuesday, children were taken by dressed up drivers in a convoy of police-escorted taxis, decorated with balloons or as floats through the city and out to Archerfield Walled Garden where they stopped for a picnic. The parade will stop outside Luca's to allow for the refilling of water tanks and for families to to fill up on ice cream. In keeping with tradition, the cabs were decorated with balloons and colourful figures. The taxi outing, which is free of charge for the families involved, began in the wake of the Second World War in 1947 and has continued ever since. Matthew Bailey, of Cor Meibion Clydach, said they would be one of three choirs singing together, including performing the teams' respective national anthems ahead of kick-off. Cllr Bailey, a Swansea councillor who represents Clydach, said two choir members phoned him to ask if it was a wind-up. "They said, 'All joking aside, are we actually going to sing at the Principality Stadium?'" he said. Cor Meibion Clydach has performed Christmas and VE Day concerts in front of around 400 people - somewhat fewer than the Principality's 74,000 capacity. "It is a great honour," said Cllr Bailey. "Its Wales-New Zealand - a massive game." "There is an element of nervousness," said Cllr Bailey. "You're probably never going to get this opportunity again. You've got to perform. Cllr Bailey, who last year resurrected what had been a successful male voice choir in Clydach in the past, said he'd been in touch with an official who arranged choirs at the stadium and that he received an email last Thursday saying Cor Meibion Clydach was one of the three selected. He said Cor Meibion Clydach member Wayne Griffiths had sung at the stadium previously with his other choir, Morriston Orpheus, Swansea, and described the experience as "completely emotional". "I am really looking forward to it, and everybody is in the choir is as well," he said. "Standing on the pitch in front of 70,000 people, singing - I will be an emotional wreck." Mr Brunton, 58, who used to play second row for Vardre RFC, Clydach, said the All Blacks were the biggest test for any Wales rugby team. They haven't lost to Wales since 1953. Cor Meibion Clydach has been guided and improved by musical director Gareth Sims and his accompanist wife, Julie. Cllr Bailey said it was up to 38 members and could accommodate more. The choir practises on Thursday evenings at Vardre RFC. Sunday sessions are also taking place on the back of the Principality Stadium news. Article continues below One of its members is David Waghorn, president of Vardre RFC. Speaking in April he said he used to listen to and help the previous male voice choir before it disbanded many years ago and that he'd regretted not joining it. "Everyone tells me singing is good for the soul and well-being," said Mr Waghorn . "I thought, 'I'm not going to miss out this time.' It's one of the best things I have done."
