Semien and Seager homer to back Eovaldi as Rangers beat Orioles 6-0
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Marcus Semien and Corey Seager homered, Nathan Eovaldi pitched five strong innings in his second start since missing a month with an elbow issue and the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-0 on Wednesday night.
Ezequiel Duran had a two-run single in the fourth, Josh Smith had three singles and Alejandro Osuna singled twice and walked a night after the rookie hit his first big league home run.
The Rangers planned to limit Eovaldi (5-3) to five innings after his bout with elbow inflammation. The right-hander allowed two hits and struck out five while throwing 72 pitches.
Dane Dunning pitched three innings for his second career save, both this season.
Baltimore first baseman Ryan O'Hearn went 1 for 4 with a double not long after being named an All-Star for the first time. The 31-year-old is set to start at DH for the American League on July 15 in Atlanta.
Semien opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the third, and Seager connected on a solo shot leading off the fifth against Baltimore starter Tomoyuki Sugano (6-5). Seager's fourth homer in six games gave him 11 for the season. Key moment
Duran, who started at third the same day struggling 2023 All-Star third baseman Josh Jung was sent to Triple-A Round Rock, singled on an 0-1 pitch after Jake Burger and Billy McKinney struck out on three pitches with runners at second and third. Key stat

What is Miami asking for from the Lakers in return for Andrew Wiggins?
The Los Angeles Lakers took a sizable step toward fielding a championship-caliber roster on Wednesday when center Deandre Ayton agreed to sign with them. He has his flaws, and there are reasons to be concerned about him, but his arrival should go a long way toward plugging their massive hole at the 5 spot. But their defense is lacking throughout the roster, and as the old saying goes, defense is the key to winning championships. There has been talk for at least a week that they have been angling to trade for Andrew Wiggins, a two-way wing who currently plays for the Miami Heat. Wiggins was an All-Star starter and won an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2022, and he could potentially make L.A. a title contender. Unfortunately, beat writer Jovan Buha said on a recent episode of "Buha's Block" that Miami is asking for a lot in return for Wiggins. 'I don't know if Gabe [Vincent], Maxi [Kleber], Shake [Milton] and a first gets you Wiggins. I think they would want, I've reported/shared what I've heard, which is that they've been asking for the first and Dalton [Knecht], which I think is an overpay for Wiggins. And I think they also want Rui [Hachimura], too, because they want to remain competitive and obviously Rui is a better player than Gabe or Maxi. So I think the Miami asking price needs to drop, as I've said before.' Hachimura, Knecht and a future first-round draft pick is definitely too much for Wiggins, who has made just one All-Star team and has two years left on his contract, one of which is a player option year. Obviously, if Miami wants to trade Wiggins and get something in return in order to rebuild after trading Jimmy Butler in February, it will have to lower its asking price, no matter who says yes to Wiggins. Wiggins averaged 18.0 points a game and shot 37.4% from 3-point range this past season for both the Warriors and Heat. After 11 seasons in the league, he remains a plus defender, especially against perimeter players, while Hachimura struggles to guard perimeter players and Knecht is lacking overall on that end of the floor.

Dodgers' Muncy on injured list with knee bruise after collision with White Sox's Taylor
Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy went on the injured list Thursday with a left knee bone bruise. He left in the sixth inning Wednesday night after a collision with Chicago White Sox center fielder Michael A. Taylor, who was attempting a steal. Muncy took a throw from catcher Will Smith and tagged out Taylor. Muncy sprawled on his back as a Dodgers trainer came out to check on him. He had to be helped off the field and was barely able to put any weight on his left leg. A White Sox trainer checked on Taylor, who sustained a bruised back and left the game. The incident occurred just before Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw got his 3,000th career strikeout against Vinny Capra to end the inning. Muncy is hitting .250 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI in 81 games this season. The Dodgers recalled outfielder Esteury Ruiz from Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he batted .292 with eight homers, 37 RBI and 38 stolen bases in 66 games. Guardians' Luis Ortiz subject of MLB gambling investigation, placed on leave, AP sources say
Associated Press Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz is the subject of a Major League Baseball gambling investigation and was placed on non-disciplinary leave Thursday, two people with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity due to the nature of the investigation. The investigation is related to in-game prop bets on two pitches thrown by Ortiz that received higher activity than usual during his starts at Seattle on June 15 and his recent outing against St. Louis on June 27. The gambling activity on the pitches was flagged by a betting-integrity firm and forwarded to MLB. ESPN reported the firm IC360 recently also sent an alert to sportsbook operators regarding Ortiz. The Athletic was the first to report that Ortiz's suspension was related to gambling. MLB said Ortiz's paid leave is through the end of the All-Star break, when players return to their teams July 17 and games resume the following day. It can be extended if the investigation remains ongoing. Chris Antonetti, Cleveland's president of baseball operations, said before Thursday night's game at the Chicago Cubs that the team can continue to have contact with Ortiz, but he can't enter any of the Guardians' facilities. Ortiz returned to Cleveland on Wednesday night. Ortiz was slated to be the starting pitcher for Thursday night's series finale. Instead, left-hander Joey Cantillo was recalled from Triple-A Columbus. Cantillo is 1-0 with one save and a 3.81 ERA in 21 appearances this season. 'We learned very little last night, but knew we needed to get someone here today to start today's game, and that really was our focus,' Antonetti said. "A lot has come out today, and that's far more information than we have. 'Our focus is we'll let the investigative process play out. The 26-year old Ortiz is in his first season with Cleveland after he was acquired in a trade with Pittsburgh last December. In four big-league seasons, Ortiz is 16-22 with a 4.05 ERA and one save. The investigation into Ortiz comes a little more than a year after MLB suspended five players for gambling, including a lifetime ban for San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023. Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly and three minor leaguers — San Diego pitcher Jay Groome, Arizona pitcher and Philadelphia infielder José Rodríguez — received one-year suspensions.
