Chinese scientist develops robot with artificial womb for human pregnancy
The 'pregnancy robot', according to outlet Chosun Biz, 'is designed in a humanoid form and is equipped with an artificial womb in its abdomen, allowing it to carry a fetus for 10 months and give birth.' — Photo by Luma Pimentel on Unsplash Robots can do a lot these days. Cleaning houses, building machines, helping doctors in surgery, and now, a scientist based out of China is working on a robot that can carry a human fetus to term. The 'pregnancy robot,' according to outlet Chosun Biz, 'is designed in a humanoid form and is equipped with an artificial womb in its abdomen, allowing it to carry a fetus for 10 months and give birth.' The fetus will be supplied with nutrients via a hose connected to the 'artificial womb filled with artificial amniotic fluid,' according to Dr Zhang Qifeng . Zhang, according to the New York Post , is Kaiwa Technology's founder. Homed in the Chinese city of Guangzhou , Zhang said that 'The artificial womb technology is already in a mature stage, and now it needs to be implanted in the robot's abdomen so that a real person and the robot can interact to achieve pregnancy, allowing the fetus to grow inside.' The appeal surrounding a pregnancy robot is the price tag that goes along with it. Chosun Biz said that the prototype will fetch nearly 100,000 yuan (RM 58,838) , or about US$14,000 (RM 59,170 ). This is a steep reduction in price compared to a human surrogate, which can cost between US$100,000 (RM 422,650) and US$200,000 (RM 845,300) in the United States , according to Circle Surrogacy. The robot has received both scrutiny and celebration by those in China , with some inquiring about the ethics of such a pregnancy. Others, however, wrote that 'women have finally been liberated,' Chosun Biz wrote. The prototype is expected to debut some time next year, though the fertilisation and implantation process was not discussed by Zhang, Chosun Biz said. – Staten Island Advance, N.Y./Tribune News Service

G2G Approach Proves More Effective, Cost-efficient In Defence Procurement
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The government-to-government (G2G) approach in the procurement of military assets has proven to be more effective, transparent and cost-saving, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the method allows for direct negotiations between the Malaysian government and the producing country without the involvement of third parties, thereby avoiding delays and cost wastage due to high commission payments to agents. 'When we negotiate directly with governments, costs are immediately reduced because we have eliminated the excessively high agent fees. That is why the (procurement) process is now completed; in the past, orders would always get stuck,' he said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today. Anwar said this in reply to a question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who asked about the level of the country's defence preparedness in facing global and regional geopolitical uncertainties. The Prime Minister said the G2G approach is now the government's main policy in strategic procurements, including with Korea, Turkiye and Italy, which has seen several major military projects proceed smoothly and according to schedule. Responding to Ahmad Fadhli's supplementary question on the proposed purchase of Black Hawk helicopters or F/A-18 fighter jets, Anwar said any decision on the procurement of air defence assets would be made by the Royal Malaysian Air Force Technical Committee. 'They (the technical committee) will be fully responsible for determining its readiness; if it cannot be justified, we will not sign. That is clearly our policy,' he said. At the same time, Anwar said the government is also focusing on enhancing preparedness, particularly in Pulau Banggi, Sabah, following geopolitical developments involving the presence of Philippine and United States military forces in the southern Philippines, near Malaysia's border. 'I agree that the geopolitical situation is uncertain. Recently, there was an increase in the military readiness of the Philippines and the United States in the southern Philippines, close to Sabah.

Asia stocks mixed, currencies steady as markets eye Fed, Ukraine summit
HONG KONG: Emerging Asian stocks were mixed on Tuesday, while most currencies held steady, as investors looked to a pivotal Federal Reserve meeting and developments from a White House summit with European leaders that could shape the Ukraine war. Stocks in Philippines and South Korea dropped 0.8 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively while shares in Taiwan shed 0.3 per cent. On the other end, equities in Singapore and Malaysia both gained 0.6 per cent. Poon Panichpibool, markets strategist at Krung Thai Bank, said Asian equities were largely mixed as investors awaited outcome from the Jackson Hole symposium for further hints on the US interest rate trajectory. He added that markets were also booking profits after strong gains in recent months, trimming exposure ahead of clearer signals on potential Fed rate cuts. The Federal Reserve's annual symposium through Aug 21–23 is in focus, with Chair Jerome Powell due to speak on economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework. "Powell will likely calibrate his message, keeping the door open for an insurance cut to avert a sharper deterioration in the labour market, while cautioning against excessive or rapid rate cuts that may undermine the need for vigilance against tariff-induced inflation," analysts at DBS said in a note. "Markets will also scrutinize how far US President Donald Trump has tilted the Fed's internal balance away from Powell's cautious stance," the note added. The cautious mood ahead of the event kept the dollar index steady, while markets also awaited developments following a White House summit with European nations that could shape the next phase of the war in Ukraine. Asian currencies were largely muted against a steady dollar. Philippines' peso inched 0.2 per cent lower while the Taiwanese dollar lost 0.1 per cent. Other currencies in the region were largely flat. Meanwhile in Indonesia, the rupiah dropped 0.5 per cent as markets reopened after a long weekend, with investors awaiting Bank Indonesia's policy decision on August 20. The benchmark stock index edged 0.1 per cent lower. The central bank is expected to pause its easing cycle on Wednesday to gauge the impact of earlier rate cuts, as inflation has picked up and economic momentum stayed solid last quarter, a Reuters poll showed. "The fiscal authorities are looking to improve budget disbursement and implement another stimulus package but the risk of revenues undershooting targets poses a constraint," analysts at Nomura said in a note.
