Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir has renewed calls for Israel to declare sovereignty over Gaza and for Palestinians to leave the enclave.
Ben-Gvir wrote on X that a 'message must be sent: to ensure that we conquer all of the Gaza, declare sovereignty over the entire Gaza, take down every Hamas member, and encourage voluntary migration.'
He added, 'Only in this way will we bring back the hostages and win the war.'
The comments came after Ben-Gvir led a march of settlers through occupied East Jerusalem, according to the Wafa news agency.
Today's death toll
Israeli attacks across Gaza have killed at least 22 people so far today, according to medical sources.
The toll includes 16 people killed while seeking urgently needed aid.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported six more Palestinians have died from forced starvation and malnutrition in the besieged territory, bringing the total to 175 people, including 93 children.

PoR Afghan repatriation set for September

Afghan refugees wait in a queue to cross the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Torkham on October 27, 2023. PHOTO: AFP The Ministry of Interior on Tuesday issued a formal notification to initiate the return of Afghan nationals holding Proof of Registration (PoR) cards, setting September 1 as the start date for repatriating those who do not opt to return voluntarily. According to the notification, the voluntary repatriation process of PoR cardholders will begin immediately, while the compulsory repatriation of remaining individuals will commence from September 1. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting in view of rising security concerns and pressure on national resources. The notification clarifies that the ongoing repatriation process for Afghan Citizen Card holders will continue as per the earlier decision of the Interim Framework for the Return Process (IFRP). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will collaborate with relevant international bodies, including the Afghan interim government, the UNHCR and others, to facilitate the return of Afghan refugees. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs, Gilgit-Baltistan and Safron will provide complete PoR data to the respective provincial and district-level committees. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) will ensure de-registration of returning Afghans at transit areas and border terminals. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has been tasked with supporting the return process at designated border crossing points. All provincial governments and relevant agencies have been instructed to map all PoR cardholders within their jurisdictions.

Lawmakers unite for Kashmir cause

The Sindh Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution to express solidarity with the people of Illegally Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and condemn Indian atrocities on the occasion of Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir or the Kashmir Exploitation Day. The resolution, tabled by Provincial Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, was supported by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and all parties present in the House. Addressing the Assembly, CM Murad reiterated Pakistan's longstanding stance that Kashmir is the country's lifeline, terming India's move to strip the region of its special status as a blatant violation of international laws. He said the Modi government had betrayed both its citizens and the Kashmiri people, adding that Pakistan would continue to raise its voice against this illegal occupation at every level. Murad ecalled the contributions of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, President Asif Ali Zardari, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in championing the Kashmir cause internationally. He also revealed that India had attempted to attack Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) in May, but Pakistan's armed forces and the nation responded decisively, downing enemy aircraft and destroying airfields, forcing India to seek US intervention for a ceasefire. The CM also condemned Israeli atrocities in Gaza and urged the international community to take immediate action. Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that despite political differences, the PPP, MQM, and PTI stood united for the cause of Kashmir. He noted that on August 5, 2019, India violated UN resolutions by revoking Kashmir's special status, and that the Indian forces had for decades subjected innocent Kashmiris to brutal repression, with thousands laying down their lives for freedom. Opposition Leader Ali Khurshidi said the day must be observed to expose India's real face to the world. PPP's Jamil Soomro demanded the restoration of Kashmir's pre-August 5 status and the right to self-determination. MQM's Fauzia Hameed expressed confidence that the day was not far when Kashmiris would achieve their rights.

Achakzai accuses ‘establishment' of undermining civilian governance

ISLAMABAD: In a scathing critique of the country's power dynamics, Mahmood Khan Achakzai on Tuesday accused the establishment of undermining civilian governance, asserting that the Constitution had been effectively 'shredded,' with unelected officials operating as the nation's real rulers. Achakzai, leader of both the Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayin-e-Pakistan – an alliance of opposition parties – and the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), condemned the government's silence on what he described as a systematic dismantling of democratic institutions. Taking a pointed dig at National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Achakzai charged him with inaction as parliamentarians were 'dragged' out of the House. 'Speaker, members were dragged in your presence,' he thundered. 'So far, no one – including you – has taken any action.' He sharply criticised the military and bureaucracy, accusing them of enabling even junior officers – such as colonels and prison superintendents – to control access to political detainees, notably ex-prime minister Imran Khan, whom he termed the country's 'biggest leader.' 'How shameful and disgusting is the treatment meted out to him,' Achakzai lamented, expressing deep concern over the state of democracy in Pakistan. Achakzai also targeted the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), a key coalition partner of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), expressing disbelief at its apparent complicity. 'The Constitution is being destroyed, and the PPP is supporting it,' he lamented. According to him, court orders are routinely flouted, and lower-level prison officials operate with impunity. 'The Constitution of Pakistan has been shredded,' he lamented. Adopting a populist tone, Achakzai asserted: 'This country does not belong to a few – Pakistan is not anyone's personal estate. Those who think so live in a fool's paradise.' Clarifying that he bore no personal animosity towards the military, Shehbaz Sharif, or Nawaz Sharif, he stressed that 'real rulers' must be those chosen by the people, not state employees. Returning to Speaker Sadiq, he criticised him over the alleged disqualification and mistreatment of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers in connection with the May 9, 2023 events. 'You should have taken a stand,' Achakzai said. 'Why were your members mistreated.' He also lamented the government's silence on international matters, especially its failure to pass a resolution condemning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stating, 'Netanyahu should be taken to the International Court of Justice.' Despite his trenchant criticism, Achakzai concluded with a call for reconciliation. 'Let us all repent and forgive each other. Let us start a new politics where this House makes the decisions,' he urged, advocating a return to civilian supremacy and provincial autonomy. However, he ended with a stark warning: 'The way you marched into Bajaur– this will lead to civil war. And if it does, the Shehbaz Sharif government will be responsible.' Echoing the anti-establishment sentiment from the opposition benches, PTI MP Malik Aamir Dogar condemned the government's crackdown. 'You sentenced our members to ten years each,' he said, referring to punishments handed down to PTI activists. 'Ten members were removed from this House, and you took no action.' On Imran Khan, Dogar added, 'He didn't bow down – that's why he's in jail. Had he submitted, he'd be sitting here today. If this is how things are going to be, then just lock the Assembly.'
