India Gazette26-06-2025
Harare [Zimbabwe], June 26 (ANI): Zimbabwe will host Sri Lanka for a white-ball series, consisting of two ODIs and three T20Is, with Harare Sports Club being the sole venue for all the matches.
The white-ball series will kick off with the two ODIs scheduled for August 29 and 31, followed by the T20I leg in early September, as per the ICC.
The tour holds added significance for Zimbabwe, with the T20Is serving as crucial preparation ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Africa Regional Final, which Zimbabwe will host from September 19, to October 4. The regional final will determine the last two African spots for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Zimbabwe Cricket's Managing Director, Givemore Makoni, expressed optimism and excitement about the upcoming series.
'We are delighted to confirm Sri Lanka's visit to Zimbabwe for what we expect to be a thrilling and competitive series. Matches between our two nations have always produced entertaining cricket, and this tour comes at a crucial time for our team as we prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup qualifying campaign,' said Makoni.
The last time the two nations squared off against each other was in January 2024, when Sri Lanka reigned victorious 2-0 in the three-match ODI series at their home. The squads for the tour are yet to be named.
Zimbabwe is gearing up to host the ICC World Test Champions, South Africa, for a two-Test series, followed by a tri-series against the Proteas and New Zealand. Sri Lanka on the other hand are featuring in their first assignment of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle at home against Bangladesh, and will compete in three ODIs and as many T20Is following the red-ball leg of the tour.

Shafali Verma dropped, Renuka Thakur in India's ODI World Cup squad

Shafali Verma (Getty Images) MUMBAI: India excluded big-hitting Shafali Verma in favour of the consistent Pratika Rawal, while including fit-again pacer Renuka Singh Thakur in their squad for the Women's ODI World Cup at home. On Tuesday, at the BCCI headquarters here, chief selector of the Indian women's team Neetu David, flanked by captain Har manpreet Kaur, announced the squad for the three ODIs against Australia, which precedes the World Cup, with just one change in both sides. The Australia series begins on Sept 14, while the World Cup begins on Sept 30 with the opening match between India and Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. TOI has learnt that the Indian women's team will undergo a weeklong camp in a few days at Visakhapatnam, one of the venues of the World Cup, where Harmanpreet & Co. play two matches, against South Africa on Oct 9 and Aus on Oct 12. Vice-Captain Smriti Mandhana was also present at the selection meeting. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Shafali, currently part of the India A team in Australia, has been excluded from both sides, as the selectors preferred Rawal, who has done exceptionally well in 14 ODIs, in which she scored 703 runs at an average of 54.07, with one hundred and five fifties. David, though, asserted that Verma remained in the mix. 'Shafali played the Australia A series. She's in the system. We've got our eyes on her. Hope she plays a lot more and gains experience, it'll help serve India in the 50-over format in the future. We want Shafali to have a long career,' David asserted. Seam bowling allrounder Amanjot Kaur has been given additional time to recover from her niggles as she is currently stationed at the Centre of Excellence ahead of the World Cup, with Sayali Satghare named in the squad to face Australia. 'She's one of the important players. We've rested her for the Australia series so that she can fully be available for the World Cup,' Harmanpreet said. Asia Cup 2025: R Ashwin's shocking admission - 'I am happy for Shubman, but...'

Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal (X) Former India spinner R Ashwin admitted that he was a bit shocked not to see the names of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer in Suryakumar Yadav-led 15-member squad for the Asia Cup. The Asia Cup will begin on September 9, with defending champions India set to face hosts United Arab Emirates a day later in Dubai in the eight-nation tournament. India and arch-rivals Pakistan have been clubbed in Group A and will clash on September 14. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'See, I understand that selection is a thankless job," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. "Leaving somebody out, telling someone they are dropped, it is not an easy thing. You have to speak to the players, you have to go through the sadness. India Asia Cup squad: Why Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill are biggest talking points "I just hope Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal were given a call, and they were told the reasons behind not being picked. 'Genuinely, I understand Shubman Gill's selection. He is also the vice-captain. He has scored a lot of runs for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He has the credentials to be picked in the T20I setup,' he added. Gill, 25, returned to the 15-man squad as deputy to skipper Suryakumar Yadav, thanks to the stellar role he played with the bat in the recent Test series against England. Poll Do you agree with Ashwin's opinion on the exclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup squad? Yes, it's unfair No, the selections are justified Not sure I don't follow cricket closely The top-order batsman scored 754 runs as India's relatively young squad fought from behind to square the five-match series 2-2. The eight-nation Asia Cup will be the first major event in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup in India in February and March. Gill, who was named Test skipper after the retirement of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli earlier this year, last played a T20 international in July 2024. 'When you have Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener in the T20 World Cup 2024, to remove someone from the World Cup squad and bring in Shubman Gill... I mean, it's okay, I am happy for Shubman, but I'm very sad for both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer. It is just not fair to these two kids,' said Ashwin. Samson Vs Abhishek, Who'll Get Dropped For Gill? Ex-Opener Makes Pick

Last Updated: Aakash Chopra picks who between Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma will be dropped from India's 11 due to Shubman Gill's return as vice-captain. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar might have left the decision on India's new T20I opening combination — who to choose between Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma — on the team management, but ex-cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that it indicates that Samson is set to be dropped soon. Abhishek and Samson were India's designated duo against England in the last T20I series in January-February. Abhishek impressed in that series to rise to the best-ranked ICC batter in the format. While Samson struggled (only 51 runs in five innings), he scored three centuries in the previous two series. Chopra feels that giving Gill, an opener, the vice-captaincy all but decided that he'd be the team's new top-order batter. 'India seems to be moving in the direction of an all-format captain," Chopra said on JioHotstar. 'With Shubman Gill's return, Sanju Samson's fate has more or less been sealed. He will not feature in the playing XI now. You will not drop Tilak Varma or Hardik Pandya, which means Samson sits out and Jitesh Sharma will likely get the nod again. One thing is very clear from this selection, the batting slots have been prioritised over personalities. With Gill coming in as vice-captain, he will definitely play and open the batting. This essentially pushes Sanju Samson out of the XI," he added. 'The captain-coach will take the call on the best balance for the team. Once we get to Dubai, we will have a bit more clarity. With more options available now, Shubman has been in great form for the last few months. So has Sanju, so two good options, along with Abhishek," he said. Gill was the second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2025, his best season to date. He's already the ODI vice-captain and at 25 one of the youngest in the squad. Plus, he is coming off a good Test captaincy debut in England, with the drawn 2-2 series working in his favor towards an all-format leadership role. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
