'It's time,' Patina, a dress store that has served the valley for 40 years, is closing its doors

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – A Roanoke County staple, Patina, a bridal and formal dress store, is closing its doors after 40 years in business. Its owner, Bonnie Jackson, says it's the state of the economy that's pushed her to close her longtime store.
For four decades, Jackson has helped generations of young women throughout the valley find their perfect dress for any occasion.

'I love my customers. I have so many good customers that come back to me and so many girls that got their homecoming and prom dresses here and now they're bringing their daughters in to get their prom dresses,' said Jackson.
Jackson says she has thought about closing since the COVID-19 Pandemic, saying it really hurt her business. Now, with the threat of high tariffs on China, where Jackson gets most of her dresses, she says it's time to end this chapter.
'We couldn't survive in any kind of tariff situation where it's so high for China to ship us our goods,' said Jackson.
Everything inside Patina is for sale, with huge discounts on homecoming, prom, and bridal dresses. Jackson says she has had people buying multiple dresses at a time because you 'just can't beat the price.'

Jackson was going to close the store at the end of May, but since she still has so much merchandise left, she plans to stay open through June.
Once Jackson has closed up shop for good with Patina, she plans to retire and do some of her favorite things: tennis and volunteer work.
'I will really miss doing this and helping all of them be beautiful. But it's time.'

The number of unsold homes in the U.S. hits a record high — is that good news for buyers?

There's nearly $700 billion in unsold homes sitting on the market nationwide, according to Redfin. That's a 20.3% jump from a year ago and, at $698 billion, likely adds up to the highest dollar amount ever, the Seattle-based online brokerage said, citing an analysis of the value of listings on from 2012 through April of this year. And $330 billion of the unsold properties — 2 out of every 5 — are considered 'stale inventory' because they've been on the market for at least 60 days. At 44%, that number is up from 42.1% a year earlier, and the highest for April since the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. So what's behind the big numbers? Here's what Redfin says: More sellers than buyers. Just two years ago, buyers outnumbered sellers but another recent Redfin analysis estimated there are nearly 500,000 more now, 1.9 million compared to 1.5 million. That 33.7% difference is up from 6.5% more sellers than buyers a year ago. Taking longer to sell. It took 40 days for a typical home to go under contract in April, compared to 35 days a year ago. During the pandemic buying boom, when mortgage rates were still at record lows, it took an average of just 24 days to seal the deal. Demand down. Polls show buyers are hesitating to make big purchases, due to the economic uncertainty surrounding President Donald Trump's policies, including ever-changing tariffs. Monthly mortgage payments have also reached record highs. Prices up. In April, the median U.S. sale price for a home was up year over year. But the total value of the current inventory climbed much more, 20.3%, indicating the increase in the number of listings 'is a bigger factor.' Denver real estate agent Matt Purdy said on the Redfin site that he spotted the trend earlier this year, at the beginning of the critical spring housing market that's supposed to be the busiest time for sales. 'A huge pop of listings hit the market at the start of spring, and there weren't enough buyers to go around,' Purdy said 'House hunters are only buying if they absolutely have to, and even serious buyers are backing out of contracts more than they used to.' But he suggested there's a silver lining in the shifting market: 'Buyers have a window to get a deal; there's still a surplus of inventory on the market, with sellers facing reality and willing to negotiate prices down.' Redfin's head of economic research, Chen Zhao, also said buyers may benefit. 'Not only are there more homes for sale than there have been in five years, but the value of those homes is higher than it has ever been,' Zhao said. 'We expect rising inventory, weakened demand, and the prevalence of stale supply to push home prices down 1% by the end of this year, which should improve affordability for buyers because incomes are still going up.'

The week after the Memorial Day holiday weekend proved slow for the evening newscasts as all three failed to make week-to-week gains in total viewers or the Adults 25-54 demo. NBC Nightly News was the only newscast not to record declines across the board for the week of May 26, as enough of an audience tuned in for Lester Holt's final broadcast as anchor to keep it from falling into the negative zone with total viewers. Holt has something else to smile about: His final week in the anchor's chair brought the demo gap between Nightly News and ABC World News Tonight with David Muir to just 53,000 viewers-its closest finish since January. Note: The weekly averages of ABC News, NBC News, and CBS News are based on four days (Tuesday-Friday). Monday's (05/26/25) broadcasts were retitled due to the Memorial Day holiday. These broadcasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. According to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, WNT averaged 7.042 million total viewers and 884,000 demo viewers for respective drops of -2% and -9% compared to the previous week. Looking at its performance alongside the same week in 2024 (the week beginning May 27), WNT was down -3% in total viewers and -14% in the demo. NBC Nightly News finished second in total viewers and the demo, averaging 5.720 million total viewers and 831,000 demo viewers. Week-to-week, the newscast was flat in the former category and dipped -5% in the latter. Year-to-year, Nightly News was up +2% in total viewers and +4% in the demo-the only newscast with gains relative to the same week in 2024. CBS Evening News drew 3.600 million total viewers and 490,000 A25-54 viewers for declines of -8% in the former category and -12% in the latter. Year-to-year, the newscast declined -15% in total viewers and -24% in the demo. On June 2, the Federal Aviation Administration revealed a construction project on one of Newark Liberty International Airport's three main runways wrapped up nearly two weeks early. "The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has completed construction of Runway 4-Left/22-Right at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). This runway will only be open for departures, while FAA flight crews ensure the runway's navigational aids are tested, calibrated and safe to use for arrivals. This is standard protocol to ensure a runway is safe to use for pilots and the flying public," the FAA said in a statement. "The airport will continue to operate with a maximum arrival rate of 28 aircraft an hour until those checks are complete. After that, the airport's maximum arrival rate will be 34 aircraft an hour." The announcement comes before the summer travel schedule becomes fully booked and is welcomed news for United Airlines, which operates nearly 70% of flights from Newark Liberty International Airport. "The airport's runway construction project is now complete. That means all runways at Newark are open, and we're confident that will lead to even better on-time performance for our airline," United said in a statement on June 2. The airline touted Newark Liberty International Airport's on-time rates over the busy holiday weekend that saw record travel numbers. "During Memorial Day weekend, one of the busiest of the year, EWR beat New York LaGuardia (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International (JFK) in on‑time departures, and over the last two days of the weekend, EWR had the best on-time rates of any large airport in the country," the airline added.
