The first phase of the vaccinations will begin from May 26 to 31, followed by the second phase from June 23 to 28 and the third round from July 21 to 26
A three-phased immunisation drive against measles and rubella (MR) will be held across Chittoor district. The drive is part of the national goal to eradicate both diseases by 2026.
District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) D.T. Sudharani, addressing medical and paramedical staff, highlighted the importance of the three-phased campaign. She urged parents and management of schools to ensure that every child received both doses of the MR vaccine.
The first phase of the vaccinations will begin from May 26 to 31, followed by the second phase from June 23 to 28 and the third round from July 21 to 26.
She said: 'Measles and rubella are dangerous viral infections that could lead to severe health complications such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, and brain inflammation in children, and if left untreated could even lead to death. The rubella infection can result in miscarriages or babies born with severe congenital defects like deafness, heart disorders, or intellectual disabilities. The Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) and Asha workers should educate pregnant mothers about the importance of the vaccinations.'
The campaign will place special focus on vulnerable populations such as migrant workers, slum dwellers, and those working in brick kilns, construction sites, fishing communities and agriculture workers.

Karnataka expands Gruha Arogya across state

He stressed that NCDs like diabetes, hypertension, and various forms of cancer have become serious health threats and cannot be left to the private sector alone, which tends to prioritise treatment over prevention. 'It is the government's responsibility to prevent these diseases before they reach critical stages. No one else will do it,' Rao said. The minister said that to support the state-wide implementation, a detailed manual has also been released for ASHA workers and health officers. 'ASHA workers will go house-to-house to spread awareness about NCDs and refer residents to nearby Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, where community health officers will conduct the actual screening. The officers will enter the screening data into the NCD portal and ensure patients diagnosed with conditions like diabetes and hypertension receive free medication immediately. In more serious cases, they will refer individuals to higher-level hospitals for further treatment,' Rao explained. The ultimate goal of this scheme is to reduce the burden of chronic diseases by identifying them early, Rao said.

Spl measles-rubella vax drive in UP to cover gaps below 95% mark

Uttar Pradesh has launched a focused measles-rubella (MR) vaccination campaign targeting 321 development blocks where vaccination coverage remains below 95%. The campaign aims to ensure every eligible child receives both doses of the MR vaccine, which protects against highly contagious viral diseases. State data shows the overall MR-I vaccination rate has reached 101.05%, while MR-II stands at 97.67%. However, 205 blocks across 12 districts have MR-I coverage under 95%, and 321 blocks in 25 districts report MR-II coverage below 95%. The campaign, which began on June 1, will continue through June 30, with special attention on these low-performing blocks, state government officials said. 'The focus remains equal for all districts with officials in 12 districts told to better network at ground level to ensure all left-out kids are given the due dose of MR vaccine,' said Dr Ajay Gupta, state immunisation officer. Districts with low vaccination (MR-I and MR-II) coverage include Lalitpur, Jalaun, Kanpur Dehat, Kanpur, Hamirpur, Shamli, Mathura, Azamgarh, Meerut, Aligarh, Banda, and Sonbhadra. The campaign targets around 53 lakh children for the first dose and 47 lakh for the second dose. In 2025, U.P. recorded a measles infection rate of 0.003% per lakh population, lower than Chhattisgarh (0.009%), Madhya Pradesh (0.006%), and Andhra Pradesh (0.005%). Notably, India aims to eliminate measles and rubella by 2026. The Universal Immunisation Programme offers two free MR vaccine doses to children between 9-12 months and 16-24 months of age.
