Sharaf strike sends Egypt through as Tanzania bow out winless
Egypt sealed their place in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations with a narrow 1-0 win over Tanzania at the Suez Canal Stadium on Friday evening.
Ahmed Sharaf's seventh-minute goal proved enough for the hosts, who finish the group stage level on seven points with South Africa and Sierra Leone, but progress by virtue of a superior head-to-head mini-league involving the three tied teams.
Tanzania, who were already eliminated before kick-off, leave the competition without a point or a goal from four matches – extending their winless run at U20 AFCON finals to seven matches across two appearances.
Egypt made the perfect start to the game when Mohamed Zaalouk's initial effort was parried into the path of Sharaf, who calmly slotted home from close range to give the home side an early lead.
Despite their early dominance, the Pharaohs struggled to add a second, and it was Tanzania who pushed harder as the match wore on.
Substitute Vedastus Masinde came closest for the East Africans, forcing a strong save from the Egyptian keeper with a well-timed header just after the hour mark.
Coach Salum Mayanga's side showed admirable determination, recording more shots and spending long periods in Egyptian territory, but their finishing continued to let them down – a problem that has plagued their entire campaign.
Tanzania's best chances came late on through Bakari Msimu and Jammy Simba, but neither could find the target. Egypt had to rely on solid defending and game management to hold on to their slim advantage.
The result means Egypt progress to the last eight and avoid the embarrassment of back-to-back group-stage exits as hosts, having also fallen at this stage in 2023. It was far from a convincing performance, but it was enough.
For Tanzania, it is a tournament to forget. Four losses from four games without scoring a single goal is a harsh reminder of the work that lies ahead if they are to compete consistently at this level.

UFC 319: Khamzat Chimaev Crowned UFC Middleweight Champion
Rana Atef Khamzat Chimaev becomes the new UFC middleweight champion. The Russian fighter dethroned South Africa's Dricus Du Plessis early Sunday at the United Center in Chicago, claiming a unanimous decision victory in a one-sided contest. Chimaev dictated the pace from the opening bell, securing more than ten takedowns and spending the majority of the fight controlling Du Plessis on the ground with relentless pressure, knees, and punches. The only real scare for Chimaev came in the fifth round when Du Plessis locked in a guillotine attempt, forcing the challenger to defend what proved to be the fight's lone moment of danger. All three judges scored the bout 50-44 in favor of Chimaev, who extended his perfect record to 15-0. While the crowd expressed its frustration at the wrestling-heavy affair, Chimaev was unfazed, celebrating his victory in trademark fashion. 'Happy, happy always,' he said. 'Get my money. Dana, save my money, brother.' Chimaev was quick to credit his opponent, praising Du Plessis for his toughness: 'That guy is strong to the finish. He's got great heart.' read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
