Grandma's late husband sparks urge to play lottery and she wins big in Maryland
A grandma is thanking her late husband after he inspired her to play the lottery, Maryland officials said.
The Randallstown woman was thinking of her late husband who played the lottery often when she decided to buy a $10 Ravens X10 ticket, according to an April 16 news release from the Maryland Lottery.
She ended up winning $200,000 with the Reisterstown ticket, officials said.
'There was no rhyme or reason to it,' the woman told lottery officials about the ticket she picked.
After scratching the ticket, the woman realized she had won but 'kept her emotions in check,' only telling her son and going with him to claim the prize money, officials said.
She plans to use the money to send her grandkids to college, officials said.
Three more Ravens X10 tickets carrying $200,000 are waiting to be claimed, officials said.
Reisterstown is about a 20-mile drive northwest of Baltimore.

Lottery player since 1973 wins big prize. ‘You've gotta play to win'
A longtime lottery player's persistence paid off with a big win in Maryland, officials said. The Clarksburg man, who's been playing the lottery since 1973, won $250,000 via Pick 5, the Maryland Lottery said in a June 2 news release. Pick 5 is one of his mainstay games, along with Pick 3 and Cash4Life, lottery officials said. He's scored some other wins recently, including $5,000 playing Pick 5 and three Cash4Life wins at $2,500, according to lottery officials. For the $250,000 win, he chose his own number combination and bought five tickets at a convenience store in Frederick, lottery officials said. 'There was nothing special about the combination, 39943, but the first three digits caught his eye when they hit on a different drawing. He's been playing that combination for more than a year,' according to lottery officials. The man plans to put his winnings in the bank, and 'eventually, it'll go into my house,' he told lottery officials. He had some words of wisdom for other lottery players, per the release, including 'don't go beyond your means.' He also said, 'The rule of thumb is, you've gotta play to win,' lottery officials said. Clarksburg is about a 45-mile drive west from Baltimore.

Man inspired by friend's lottery win buys tickets. He ‘couldn't believe' prize
When a Maryland man's friend won a couple thousand dollars on a lottery ticket, he took note. 'Growing up in Baltimore, I remember everyone playing the Lottery, it was just a part of the culture,' the man told Maryland Lottery officials in a June 3 news release. With his friend's lottery win at the forefront of his mind, the man said he wanted to 'give it a try and see what happens.' He bought a handful of lottery tickets at a Baltimore convenience store 'after finishing a long work shift,' lottery officials said. As he scratched his tickets at the store, he found two winners: One ticket scored him a $5 prize, while the other's prize 'stunned him,' lottery officials said. 'His decision paid off in a big way' as the player won $100,000 on a $10 Ice ticket, lottery officials said. 'I couldn't believe it,' the winner told lottery officials. 'I rushed home right away to tell my wife and mother.' The man told lottery officials he and his wife plan to spend his winnings 'paying bills and setting up a college fund for their son.'
