GE Aerospace to invest $16M in Durham despite tariff impacts
GE Aerospace has hundreds of workers in Durham an thousands across North Carolina.
Story Highlights GE Aerospace plans $1 billion investment despite tariff impacts.
Durham facility to receive $16 million for increased engine production.
GE Aerospace employs 2,000 people across North Carolina.
Despite significant impacts expected from tariffs, GE Aerospace still plans to invest $1 billion into its manufacturing operation, including in Durham.
Tucked away near Research Triangle Park, GE Aerospace operates an airline engine manufacturing facility with 400 employees. It's one of just three GE Aerospace commercial engine assembly lines in the United States. And of that $1 billion planned investment, $16 million has been earmarked for the Durham site.
Tariffs, however, are taking a toll on the bottom line.
On an earnings call this week, H. Lawrence Culp, CEO of GE Aerospace, reiterated the company's commitment to investing in manufacturing. But he also told analysts tariff policy would 'result in additional costs for us and our supply chain.'
The company, based in Cincinnati, will seek to save $500 million this year by cutting costs and raising prices. But GE Aerospace does not plan to pull back in Durham. Kristen Neubauer, Durham plant leader said in an email that, 'as demand grows, we'll continue to build capacity into our shop to meet that ramp for our customers.'
The firm doesn't provide site specific numbers, but said it delivered a total of 1,900 engines last year. In Durham, that includes engine models for regional aircraft (CF34), narrow body aircraft (CFM56, LEAP) and wide body aircraft (CF8, GE90, GE9X, GEnx).
The company recently confirmed plans to make major investments at the site, including new assembly systems that will increase capacity.
Neubauer said the focus is on creating 'world class processes' to be ready to ramp up the LEAP engine and wide body 9X engine. The LEAP will power planes such as the Boeing 737 Max and the Airbus A320neo. The GE9X will power massive Boeing 777Xs.
'We have done a lot of work focused on improving safety, quality and delivery,' Neubauer said.
GE Aerospace has 2,000 employees across the state. GE Aerospace's investment in Durham is part of a $100 million commitment across the company's entire North Carolina operation that also includes $13 million at its West Jefferson site and $20 million at a facility in Asheville that produces engine parts. The company also has operations in Wilmington.
GE Aerospace is a collaborator in Honda Aero, which has a facility in Burlington that makes the engine for the HondaJet manufactured by Honda Aircraft Co. in Greensboro.
North Carolina is getting a lot of attention in the aerospace sector, including from JetZero, a next-generation jet maker considering the Greensboro area for a 10,000-job manufacturing plant.

A New Era of Trade Warfare Has Begun for the U.S. and China
The U.S.-China trade conflict is quickly morphing into a fight over global supply chains, as the two nations limit the sharing of critical technologies that could have lasting consequences for scores of industries. The United States last week suspended some sales to China of components and software used in jet engines and semiconductors, a response to a clampdown by Beijing on the export of minerals used in large sectors of manufacturing. Both sides over the last few days have accused the other of operating in bad faith. The supply chain warfare, which comes on top of tariffs the two countries have inflicted on the other's imports, has alarmed companies that say they cannot make their products without components sourced from both. And it has made officials in Washington increasingly nervous about other choke points where China could squeeze the United States, including pharmaceuticals or shipping. In recent weeks, the airplane industry has emerged as both a weapon, and a victim, in this fight. The jet engine technology that powers airplanes, and the navigation systems that control them, largely come from the United States, developed by companies like General Electric. In China's quest to build a viable competitor to Boeing, for example, it has had to source engine technology from GE Aerospace. But a jet engine also cannot be made without China. Minerals that are processed there are essential for special coatings and components that help the engine operate smoothly at high temperatures, as well as other uses. Beijing restricted exports of those minerals, known as rare earths, in April after President Trump began imposing high tariffs on Chinese imports. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

GE Aerospace (GE): A Bull Case Theory
We came across a bullish thesis on GE Aerospace (GE) on Asymmetric Ventures' Substack. In this article, we will summarize the bulls' thesis on GE. GE Aerospace (GE)'s share was trading at $241.78 as of 27th May. GE's trailing and forward P/E were 38.14 and 43.29 respectively according to Yahoo Finance. A huge in-process machining center producing parts for aircraft and aerospace systems. GE Aerospace is a leading force in the aerospace industry, primarily generating revenue through its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services. This segment benefits from a large installed base of engines and Power-by-the-Hour contracts, which provide customers with predictable costs and GE with stable, recurring income. The company's extensive global network of service centers and highly trained workforce enable rapid and efficient engine servicing, reinforcing its market dominance. Programs such as TrueChoice™ and TrueEngine™ enhance customer loyalty by allowing flexible maintenance options and improving engine performance and residual value. Additionally, GE Aerospace leverages advanced predictive maintenance technology that utilizes real-time data to anticipate engine issues, reducing downtime and lowering maintenance costs for clients. The firm maintains significant competitive advantages due to high barriers to entry, including complex engineering expertise, regulatory certifications, and long-term relationships with major aircraft manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus. These partnerships give GE Aerospace exclusive access to key engine programs, securing a near-monopoly in several market segments. The company also benefits from a strong aftermarket position, with customers relying on GE for life-cycle support of their engines. Under CEO Larry Culp's leadership, GE Aerospace has focused on operational efficiency, innovation, and strategic portfolio management, helping the division navigate challenges like supply chain disruptions and rising competition. Its robust balance sheet and steady cash flows position it well for ongoing investment in technology and growth initiatives.
