
Nissan layoffs continue with 10,000 more jobs on the line
Nissan Motor Co. is set to cut an additional 10,000 jobs worldwide as the struggling automaker seeks to stem its deepening financial losses, bringing the total planned layoffs to 20,000, or 15 percent of its global workforce.
This decision follows the announcement in November that Nissan would slash 9,000 jobs and scale back production capacity by 20 percent.
The move comes as the company braces for a record net loss of up to 750 billion yen ($5.06 billion) for the fiscal year ending March 2025--the largest in its history.
Nissan is expected to formally announce the latest round of layoffs in the coming days.
The aggressive cost-cutting measures reflect the automaker's ongoing battle with plummeting sales and mounting structural inefficiencies.
The company said its global vehicle sales have dropped by more than 40 percent in a seven-year period, going from 5.77 million units in fiscal 2017 to an estimated 3.3 million units in fiscal 2024.
Driving the restructuring plan is Ivan Espinosa, Nissan's new president, who took the helm on April 1. After reviewing the company's revival strategy, Espinosa concluded that further downsizing was necessary to stabilize operations.
A combination of factors has eroded Nissan's profitability, including a dip in brand value and a thin product lineup in North America.
Intense price competition with local electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle manufacturers in China has also contributed to the decline.
Despite these challenges, the company maintained a production capacity for 5 million vehicles, further hurting its profits.
The crisis escalated last year when Nissan's poor financial results became evident. Its interim earnings for the first half of fiscal 2024 showed a dramatic year-on-year decline of over 90 percent in both operating profit and net income.
Hopes for a major turnaround were pinned on a proposed alliance with Honda Motor Co., including a shared holding company that would be led by a Honda-appointed CEO.
However, tensions rose over Nissan's slow pace in implementing restructuring measures, leading Honda to propose a full acquisition of Nissan. The talks ultimately collapsed in February.

Honda Motor's net profit falls over 50% in April-June quarter
Honda Motor has reported a net profit of just over 196 billion yen, or about 1.3 billion dollars, for the April to June quarter. That marks a 50.2 percent drop from a year earlier. Honda released its financial results for the first quarter on Wednesday. It announced that sales fell 1.2 percent from the same period last year to 5.3 trillion yen, or around 36 billion dollars. The company attributed the decline in part to a drop of over 124 billion yen, or about 845 million dollars, in operating profit due to the impact of US tariffs imposed under President Donald Trump. At the same time, Honda revised upward its full-year profit forecast from 250 billion yen to 420 billion yen, or roughly 2.8 billion dollars. The automaker says one reason for the revision is its assumption that US tariffs on Japanese auto imports will be lowered to the agreed rate of 15 percent from September. Honda's chief financial officer and director, Fujimura Eiji, said the lowered rate would have a positive effect and welcomed the clarity it brings. But he noted that many uncertainties remain, such as when the new rate will actually take effect. He added that he is calling on the Japanese government to reach an agreement with the US and disclose details as soon as possible.

Honda raises annual profit guidance despite U.S. tariff impact
Honda raised its annual profit forecast even as its quarterly figure took a hit from U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on cars and car parts imported to the United States. The carmaker now sees ¥700 billion ($4.7 billion) in operating profit for the fiscal year ending March 2026, it said Wednesday. That compares with the prior guidance for ¥500 billion and analysts' average estimate of ¥896 billion. Profit was ¥244 billion for the three-month period between April and June, falling short of analysts' prediction for ¥310 billion, after a ¥125 billion negative impact from tariffs. Sales fell 1% to ¥5.3 trillion in the quarter. Honda's updated profit forecast signals cautious optimism despite continued uncertainty from U.S. tariffs. Japanese carmakers were bracing for billions in losses; the trade pact agreed upon last month averted what they called their "worst case scenario,' after negotiations led Trump to impose tariffs of 15% for Japan. Honda now expects a gross impact of ¥450 billion from the trade levies, Chief Financial Officer Eiji Fujimura said, down from the carmaker's previous forecast for ¥650 billion. He kept the full year unit sales volume forecast the same, at 3.62 million vehicles. The upward revision to operating profit was because of the tariff level and foreign exchange outlook, according to Honda. Its motorcycle business remained robust, mainly due to growth in Brazil, while its automobile segment decreased across Asia, with a sharp drop in China. The United States represents the biggest market for five of Japan's largest automakers, including Honda. The company sold roughly 1.4 million cars in the U.S. in 2024, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, almost 40% of which were imported. Honda also said it was postponing plans to establish an electric vehicle (EV) supply chain in Ontario, Canada, by two years, owing to a downturn in demand. The previously announced plan included a battery plant and an EV factory with an annual production capacity of 240,000 vehicles.

Among Japanese companies, automakers Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. will report fiscal first quarter results this week, as will electronics and entertainment company Sony Corp. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 0.6% to finish at 40,794.86. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 added 0.8% to 8,843.70. South Korea's Kospi was little changed, gaining less than 0.1% to 3,198.14. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.2% to 24,958.75, while the Shanghai Composite gained 0.8% to 3,633.99. U.S. futures were up 0.5%. In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude rose 57 cents to $65.73 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, added 64 cents to $68.28 a barrel.
