Aidan O'Brien's Rock Of Cashel upsets the odds to get back on track at Navan

The three-year-old had been highly tried since winning a Galway maiden last season, running in the National Stakes and the Dewhurst last autumn.
This term he has been campaigned in Group and Listed company before trying his hand in a handicap to no avail at Royal Ascot.
Against just three runners in this conditions race, however, the 3/1 chance took command early in the straight under Wayne Lordan to get the better of Johnny Murtagh's 1/4 hotpot Nautical Force by two lengths.
O'Brien's stable representative Chris Armstrong said: 'In fairness to him, he has been dropped in the deep end from word go this year. He ran with credit behind Henri Matisse and Delacroix and was beaten five to six lengths behind proper Group One horses.
'Obviously, Johnny's horse brought a high level of form here. Wayne gave him a lovely ride and the race worked out for him beautifully.
'He's a horse we thought of as a stakes horse after Galway last year as a two-year-old, so hopefully this will do his confidence good and we will bring him back up to a stakes race over a mile and a-quarter and see how he goes.'
Murtagh had already been on the mark with newcomer Zuheila (5/2) in the six-furlong maiden. Ben Coen nursed the Aga Khan Studs-owned three-year-old into the closing stages before getting down to business to beat Ger Lyons' Washington Street by half a length.
'She's a nice, big filly and bred to have a bit of speed. She has been doing things nice at home,' said Coen. 'You can see why she hasn't got to the track until now, she's a big girl but she did that nicely. She'd a good look when she hit the front, but hopefully she can stay improving.
'She was green running down the hill and, when I hit the rising ground, she came good.'
At Sligo, meanwhile, the featured handicap hurdle went to Sargent Lightfoot (4/1) for the trainer-jockey combination of Adrian Murray and Kieren Buckley – the 11-year-old getting the better of fellow veteran Jack Holiday on the run-in.

Filey Bay and Alan O'Sullivan star at Galway on opening evening

Filey Bay justified market support in recording an emotional victory in the Connacht Hotel (Q.R.) Handicap at Galway. The feature event on the first evening of the week-long festival at Ballybrit is restricted to amateur riders and it was Alan O'Sullivan - brother of the late Michael O'Sullivan, who tragically died in February following injuries suffered in a fall at Thurles - who shone in the saddle. O'Sullivan had to weave a path to get a run on the JP McManus-owned gelding and when he did he fairly shot clear aboard Emmet Mullins' 7-1 chance, with the winning jockey looking to the skies as he passed the line four and three-quarter lengths ahead of Mon Coeur.

Illinois drops back in trip for Goodwood Cup test

Illinois and Scandinavia give Aidan O'Brien a strong hand in his bid for a fifth victory in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup on Tuesday. The Ballydoyle handler saddled the brilliant Yeats to land the Group One contest in both 2006 and 2008, a feat repeated by his latest superstar stayer Kyprios, who struck gold in 2022 before regaining his crown 12 months ago. Following the latter's retirement, Illinois was drafted into the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and performed admirably to finish best of the rest behind the front-running Trawlerman - and with the latter not in attendance, the four-year-old is favourite to go one better on the Sussex Downs. O'Brien said: "He ran well in the Gold Cup and we're looking forward to this, obviously it's a shorter trip than Ascot. "We thought this would be a nice third race back for him this year and we've been very happy with him since Ascot." Connections have a major second string to their bow in the form of Scandinavia, a dominant winner of the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket three weeks ago and as the sole three-year-old in the field, he is in receipt of a stone in weight from Illinois and the rest of his rivals. "He was good in Newmarket and he seems in good form. Obviously he's only a baby, but he liked the extra distance in Newmarket the last day and seems to have come out of the race well," O'Brien added. Despite deciding against running Trawlerman, John and Thady Gosden are well represented, with Gold Cup fourth Sweet William joined by French Master and Military Academy. French Master claimed his fourth win from six career starts in the Copper Horse Stakes at the Royal meeting and now tests the water over two miles on a track where he has been successful before. John Gosden said: "Sweet William has been in very good form. He broke well in the Gold Cup, it was a tough race and in the end the two and a half (miles) was a little too far for him - he's a two-mile to two-and-a-quarter-mile horse, but he ran a brave race. "He's in very good form and he knows Goodwood well, so back we go again." Of French Master, the trainer added: "I think he's a horse who will rise to the occasion. He won in good style (at Royal Ascot), but he's going from a handicap to a completely open Group One. "We're hopeful he'll run a good race and we're very much looking forward to running him and seeing the jump in class. If he doesn't handle it, we can regroup." Another who appears better suited to the drop in trip will be Saeed bin Suroor's Dubai Future, who split Illinois and Sweet William when third in the Gold Cup. Bin Suroor said: "Dubai Future worked well on Thursday and heads to Goodwood in good order. "He ran a good race in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, but two miles suits him better, as he showed in the Dubai Gold Cup.

Frankie Dettori got on well with this old boy and I'm backing him at 4-1 to score on day one of Goodwood

YOUTH is a gift of nature while age is a work of art. That's certainly the case at Goodwood on Tuesday as the Glorious five-day meeting gets under way live on ITV. 1 Matt Chapman is backing Kinross to do the business once more on day one of Goodwood Credit: PA The new kid on the block – can they touch this!? – is three-year-old Scandinavia who goes in the Group 1 Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup over two miles. But painting a pretty picture once again is veteran Kinross, back for more in the Group 2 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes over seven furlongs. Ralph Beckett's two-time Group 1 hero has Lennox form figures of 1213 in four previous tries. It's hard not to love Goodwood on the Sussex Downs, and while there might be some rain today most of the week looks set for decent weather. Scandinavia's Aidan O'Brien-trained stable companion Illinois is likely to start a hot favourite for the Goodwood Cup. And the Ascot Gold Cup runner-up faces some familiar names in Normandie Stud's terrific Sweet William and former St Leger third Sunway. Less exposed, though, is French Master, now owned by Wathnan but once running in the same silks as Sweet William. French Master is fascinating. Most read in Horse Racing Even more exciting could be SCANDINAVIA . He had a bad trip in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot but with cheekpieces looked really good in a St Leger trial, the Bahrain Trophy, at Newmarket last time. Ryan Moore has ditched him for Illinois, but I suspect Wayne Lordan will be in for a good spin. Eight-year-old KINROSS is not as good as he once was, and a mark of 116 is proof. He has been rated 119. But what it also shows is that he's still very capable as we all saw when he chased home Ten Bob Tony on seasonal debut at Haydock under a 5lb penalty. I'd expect him to improve past that race fit rival today. Coverage on ITV starts with a handicap over 1m2f. TONY MONTANA has the ability to go close in a race like this and gets a decent draw in stall 6 so he is the each-way selection. David Egan rides for Michael Bell on a horse who has finished second at Goodwood and York this term off a mark of 94 and 96. He was up to 99 when cheekpieces were added for the Hunt Cup over 1m but is back down to 98 now over the trip that suits. Third in this race when rated 94 and staying on well, he certainly has place claims. In the Group 2 Coral Vintage Stakes for juveniles over 7f I like ANDAB each-way for Dylan Browne McMonagle and Joseph O'Brien. The key to this horse is the step up in distance. The son of Saxon Warrior was a decent third in the Marble Hill before a fine fourth (Do Or Do Not in second) in the Coventry at Royal Ascot. He was powering home that day and I really think he's a different prospect at this trip. Coverage concludes with a handicap over 5f. SHAGRAAN is drawn around pace and he's in a good position to track and pounce. Ultimately he might be in the grip of the handicapper, but he beat 15 rivals over course and distance last year and has been consistent this season including when fourth to American Affair in a big field at York off 101. He remains on that mark for the fourth time in a row here. A few quid each-way for Tom Marquand and Mick Appleby.
