No Half Measures stuns July Cup rivals
As the six-furlong event reached the business end she was picking off rivals and after locking horns with Big Mojo, it was No Half Measures who came out on top by a neck with a further length and three-quarters back to Run To Freedom in third.
Hughes steered Oasis Dream to victory in the 2003 July Cup and after taking up training in 2015, No Half Measures is his first Group One winner as a handler.
An emotional Hughes said: 'I've just got a bear hug off William Buick and he's cut my lip!
'It's brilliant. Disappointments when you're training are very hard and the highs don't meet the lows. We fancied the filly yesterday Mood Queen and she finished last, which was excruciating, and the highs aren't even high enough.
'It's an up and down game, but I'm coping better with it now than I used to. It's been a tough enough ride to get to here, but I'm definitely appreciating more now than when I started.
'I didn't appreciate all those good horses when I was riding, I just took it for granted and I was very lucky to be riding for Richard Hannon and having the Khalid Abdullah job – I was privileged to be riding good horses every year.
'We get a good horse through the yard now and again and I'm trying to mind it like a baby and I'm watching it every day in case it goes wrong because you probably only have one or two bullets. In Hannon's, if one broke you'd get on another one next day or I'd get another ride. There was a flow of horses and I found it very easy.
'I was a little bit naive when I started training – I thought if I bought 20 horses one of them was going to be good. Then I bought 20 the following year and still no good one.
'This is harder, but more rewarding for sure.'
Of gaining his first Group One as a trainer, he added: 'I've got the monkey off my back that's for sure and I can retire now saying I rode a July Cup winner and trained one, so that's really nice.
'Of course I want more, it's my nature as I'm very competitive, but if you don't have the horses you can't train them.'
No Half Measures won a handicap at this meeting last year before graduating to Group Three and Listed success, but Hughes admitted he had not expected to hit the mark at the highest level.
He said: 'She won here last year in a handicap and when Ryan (Moore) got off her I asked him if we'd get a bit of black type and he said 'she's better than that', which is something Ryan never says! He's a realist, so I was quite surprised by that.
'We plotted to get our black type and we got it and she's done nothing but improve.
'There was very little pressure today really. At halfway I thought she was going OK and then I just held my head because I couldn't believe what was happening!
'I just thought if she's going to get caught she's going to caught, because they normally do, but I would have been pleased even with second or third, so to win is just a bonus.'
Callan has had a quiet season so far and was grateful to get the Group One call up from Hughes.
He said: 'It's surreal because I'm getting into the twilight of my career. My son Jack is starting and I'm getting a lot of flak saying I've getting give up. He was with Kevin Ryan yesterday and my old boss Kevin telling me I've got to retire so this one's for you, Kev!
'I've got to thank Richard (Hughes) because if you don't get given these opportunities then you can't take them and I'm not in a position to be going around scouting and taking rides.
'You know this game – you're only as good as your last ride so you've got to come out and prove yourself every time you come out, every day.'

But as track and field faces an uphill battle to win over new audiences, Hughes is convinced two of the country's best facing off would 'bring the excitement.' He even wants a pre-race square off - just as pugilists would during their weigh-in. 'I'm done with the talking about it, I really want to make it happen,' says Hughes before Saturday's British Championships at Alexander Stadium. 'If we were to have a preview like in boxing where you step up like on a weight scale, you go in each other's faces; you might have a little bit of backlash at each other. 'It would be pretty cool if someone could pick it up and be like, 'Okay, seeing that you guys have been talking about it for quite some time, let's make this happen.' 'See where it goes from there. I would actually like it to be in Birmingham. That's where he is from. Let's compete in Birmingham – just so he can shut up.' Hughes says 'the only thing that's holding us back' is a meet organiser willing to host the battle. But he knows there is a growing responsibility for athletes to put themselves out there, adding: 'You have to be in the faces of people if you want their attention.' As for how he thinks the race would go, in the sprinter's view there can only be one winner. 'I'd beat Matt. He would tell you, 'I'll beat Zharnel'. I will beat Matt, that's for sure. I know he wanted the lane arrangement to be I'm in lane seven, he is in lane six. 'I will definitely blast out, get myself ahead of him, he will be there. I have a quicker 200m than him. So I will separate a little bit from him. But he will start to close down the latter part of the race, that I know for sure. 'The last 30m are where I will hit the lactic wall and him being a 400m athlete will start to come through stronger than I will. It's just for me to race in the last 30 metres.' Hughes' assessment of this evening's competition over the 100m, which includes world indoor 60m champion Jeremiah Azu, is less detailed though with a place in next month's World Championships in Tokyo at stake 'I'm not focused on them,' he adds. 'If I focus on my craft and try to better what I'm trying to fix in each race, that's what matters to me. 'Obviously there will be competition but I know for a fact that I'll be showing up healthy and ready to compete and giving my best. I try not to let it consume me. At the end of the day, I want to go into the trials relaxed. Because you don't want to be going in there too tense. 'It causes too much pressure on yourself. There's too much weight on your shoulders. You don't need that when you're going into a high, intense competition already. I'm looking forward to just going through the rounds and managing the finals and do what I need to do – and that is to secure my win.'

Term Of Endearment out for Lillie Langtry repeat
Having previously won twice at Group Three level, the six-year-old bagged this Group Two prize 12 months ago for Henry de Bromhead before being sold for 1.3 million guineas at Tattersalls in December. She has failed to add her tally since joining William Haggas for her new owner Zhang Yuesheng, but was only beaten a head by Scenic in the Bronte Cup at York on her penultimate start and was just over two lengths behind veteran stayer Coltrane in Sandown's Coral Marathon four weeks ago. 'She obviously won the race last year but we didn't have her then,' said Haggas. 'She seems fine, she's a nice filly and the drop of rain would suit her. 'It might have been good to firm when she won last year, but in our experience with her, she'd be suited by the drop of rain.' Term Of Endearment's rivals include Goodie Two Shoes, who has won her last three races for Joseph O'Brien and JP McManus, while John and Thady Gosden saddle both Sueno and Danielle and Owen Burrows sends out Waardah, winner of a Listed event at this track in early June. O'Brien said of his runner: 'It looks a nice race but we are a little worried about the rain so we'll be taking a watching brief on that, but she's in good shape and has prepared well for the race. 'Since coming back to the Flat she has really taken her form to another level over staying distances and we'll be trying to make her a Group Two winner after winning a Group Three last time.' Haggas also saddles the defending champion in the Group Three Coral Glorious Stakes in Al Aasy, as well as six-time winner Candleford. He added: 'Hopefully Al Aasy will run a good race in it again. He won it last year so we know he acts on the track, which is not always a given. 'Candleford won't run if it is soft, so it depends how soft it is.' In the same race Charlie Appleby is represented by one-time Classic contender Arabian Crown, who finished third behind stablemate El Cordobes in the Group Two Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket on his first start since being gelded. Speaking on the Godolphin website, Appleby said: 'Arabian Crown put up a pleasing effort in the Princess of Wales's Stakes and came out of the race well. 'The ground was quick enough at Newmarket and he should enjoy the slower conditions here.'

Jm Jungle surprises King George rivals
A field of 12 sprinters went to post for the five-furlong dash, with John and Sean Quinn's high-class handicapper Jm Jungle a 14-1 shot for what was his first appearance at Group-race level. Smartly away in the hands of Jason Hart, the five-year-old was towards the main group that raced on the far side of the track from the start and showed a willing attitude when the challengers attempted to reel him late on to prevail by a neck. She's Quality filled the runner-up spot for her fourth race in succession, with Commonwealth Cup victor Time For Sandals half a length further behind in third. 'We knew he operated on a downhill track like Epsom (won the Dash on Derby day) and that the ground might inconvenience others more than us. 'He probably loves fast ground but he's versatile and is a horse that gives his all, while he's a lot stronger this year. 'In the paddock he was walking round like an old pro. These opportunities don't come around all that often, and when you have a day like this it's massive.' An appearance closer to home is next on Jm Jungle's agenda, with a tilt at Group One glory in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes on August 22 – a race also won by Highfield Princess in 2022 – looming large. 'Jason said early in the season that the race he would love to ride him in would be the Nunthorpe, simply because of how fast they go and how much he likes York,' Quinn added. 'That looks the natural next step because he is a Group Two winner now, so you want to be going up from there, and we put him in the Abbaye earlier in the week and that's a similar race. You get a good draw up the rail and you see how much speed he has – he'd be in that van early doors. 'It was easier watching Highfield Princess because she never looked like getting beat. I was hoping, willing for the line to come in the last furlong today but it did and he toughed it out. The second came to him and I think he went again.'
