In UP, PM Modi says Indian armed forces made Pak Army ‘plead to stop the war'

Reasserting that India will no longer be intimidated by the threat of nuclear weapons, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the heroics of the Indian armed forces pushed the Pakistani Army to 'plead to stop the war'. Addressing a crowd after laying the foundation stone and inaugurating multiple projects over Rs 47,600 crore in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, Modi also underlined that Pakistan's 'ploy of using state and non-state actors' is not going to work anymore.
'India's principle in the fight against terror is to give a befitting reply to every terror attack. Its time, method and conditions will be decided by our forces themselves,' he added.
The PM also restated that Operation Sindoor, which India launched in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed, was not over yet.
'It (Operation Sindoor) showed the world the power of indigenous weapons and Make in India. We destroyed terrorist hideouts in Pakistan by going hundreds of miles inside. Indian weapons, BrahMos missile entered enemy territory and wreaked havoc,' the prime minister told the rally.
In his first official comments after the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan, PM Modi had outlined that Operation Sindoor was the new normal and the country would not be held to ransom by nuclear blackmail.
On Friday, Modi also spoke of Shubham Dwivedi, calling him the 'son of Kanpur' who was a victim of the terror attack in Pahalgam.
'All of us can understand the anger and pain of our sisters and daughters. However, the entire world saw their anger and pain in form of Operation Sindoor, and we completely destroyed several terror hubs in Pakistan,' he said.
Modi also lauded the bravery of the armed forces at the LoC during Operation Sindoor. 'It was the valour and courage of our armed forces that forced Pakistan to beg for a ceasefire. I once again salute our brave soldiers. To our enemy, who was pleading during Operation Sindoor, I reiterate: the operation is not over yet,' he said.
On Friday, PM Modi inaugurated the new underground section of the Kanpur metro rail project from Chunniganj to Kanpur Central. This section includes five new underground stations — Chunniganj, Bada Chauraha, Naveen Market, Nayaganj and Kanpur Central.
Additionally, PM Modi also inaugurated three 660-megawatt power units in Ghatampur and a thermal power project in Panki. These projects are expected to ensure a stable and sufficient electricity supply for Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states. Two new railway bridges from the Panki power plant to Kalyanpur were also inaugurated.

US Speaker reacts to Indian-American Megha Vemuri's pro-Palestine speech: 'Have your children avoid MIT'

Speaker Mike Johnson reacted to Indian-origin Megha Vemuri's pro-Palestine speech at the commencement ceremony and called it ignorant, hateful and morally bankrupt. Johnson also took MIT to task as he questioned why the institute has not properly responded to it. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Speaker was reacting to a post by MAGA commentator Megyn Kelly who criticized Vemuri's apathy to the Jewish students attending the ceremony. "have your children avoid MIT & the Ivy League at all costs," Johnson wrote. "So this woman hijacks the MIT graduation to make the whole thing about her personal beliefs about Israel, any insult to the Jewish students or others in attendance be damned. Selfish, self-aggrandizing, disrespectful & RUDE," Megyn Kelly wrote on X as Megha Vemuri's speech condemning her alma mater for its Israeli ties drew mixed response -- several of her classmates cheered and also protested Friday as MIT banned Vemuri from attending the rest of the event. MAGA commentators, some Indian commentators and many Jewish students criticized Vemuri and questioned why she needed to do that. Vemuri gave a different speech to the MIT administration which was approved but on the stage, she delivered a different one praising her classmates for protesting against Israel. "Last spring, MIT's undergraduate body and graduate student union voted overwhelmingly to cut ties with the genocidal Israeli military. You called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. And you stood in solidarity with the pro-Palestinian activists on campus. You faced threats, intimidation and suppression coming from all directions, especially your own university officials," Vemuri said. Jewish students walked out of the speech as Vemuri accused MIT of being complicit in the "ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people". What MIT said on Vemuri's speech Vemuri was barred from attending the rest of the event while MIT said they support free expression but they don't stand by what Vemuri did. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "With regard to MIT's Commencement 2025 activities, the speech delivered by a graduating senior at Thursday's OneMIT Commencement Ceremony was not the one that was provided by the speaker in advance. While that individual had a scheduled role at today's Undergraduate Degree Ceremony, she was notified that she would not be permitted at today's events," an MIT spokesperson said Friday. "MIT supports free expression but stands by its decision, which was in response to the individual deliberately and repeatedly misleading Commencement organizers and leading a protest from the stage, disrupting an important Institute ceremony," MIT said.

Almatti dam height issue: MVA netas seek meeting with flood study panel members

Kolhapur: Maha Vikas Aghadi's elected representatives have written to state irrigation minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, expressing concern over their exclusion from discussions regarding the Almatti dam height issue. They are requesting clarification on state govt's position concerning floods and Karnataka's plans for the dam's elevation. Despite Vikhe Patil's assurance at a May 21 meeting in Mumbai about including all political parties in subsequent discussions, MVA functionaries report they weren't invited to the May 31 meeting. The correspondence, endorsed by MPs Shahu Chhatrapati, Vishal Patil, and legislators from Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara districts, raises several queries. They seek information about the implementation status of the Nandkumar Vadnere committee's recommendations following the 2019 floods. The MVA politicians requested a consultation with the panel to understand their conclusions about the dam height on flooding. They also raised questions about the status of the National Institute of Hydrology's study regarding the dam's backwater effects on flooding, and whether their findings have been submitted to the govt. "Over the past month, approximately 3,000 objections have been filed with central govt by the people of Sangli and Kolhapur regarding the concerns of raising the height of the dam. What is central govt's stance on these objections, and has state govt corresponded with central govt on this matter? If not, why? These issues need clarification," said Satej Patil, Congress MLC. The representatives are also requesting details about the Maharashtra Resilient Development Programme (MRDP), a Rs 3,200 crore initiative to address recurring floods in Kolhapur and Sangli districts. They specifically asked whether scientific studies support the project's effectiveness in flood control and requested access to relevant reports.
