The supply chain's last mile is complex and expensive. AI has the potential to fix its woes.

In the last mile, the part of the supply chain that involves transporting goods from a warehouse to a consumer's home, many things could go wrong. A package could end up at the wrong address, shipments could be late due to traffic, or a thunderstorm could damage a parcel left out in the rain.
"You're dealing with humans and the real world and trucks and traffic," said Fred Cook, the cofounder and chief technology officer of last-mile delivery company Veho.
In an area long dominated by carriers like UPS, FedEx, and the US Postal Service, Veho and many other software providers are looking to solve the challenges that pervade this notoriously complex and expensive part of the supply chain. They're using AI to design more efficient delivery routes, improve accuracy and the customer experience, and predict errors before they might happen.
Erik Mattson, a partner in consulting firm AlixPartners' Manufacturing and Operations practice, sees "a big opportunity for AI to help this industry catch up to other industries."
E-commerce sales continue to grow, reaching new highs of $300 billion in the last two quarters. This makes the last mile busier than ever and ripe for a technology disruption. A McKinsey report found that in the last decade, about $80 billion in venture capital went to logistics startups, with on-demand last-mile delivery platforms getting the greatest share of those funds.
AI from the road to the front door
Last-mile routes typically involve multiple stops and individual small packages — rather than one truck delivering pallets to a single warehouse — making this supply chain segment difficult to manage efficiently and expensive for the businesses involved. Last-mile delivery makes up an estimated 41% of all logistics costs in the supply chain, according to the Capgemini Research Institute.
One of the earlier applications of routing technology in the last mile was a machine-learning application that UPS launched in 2013 called ORION, or On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation. Four years ago, the parcel company rolled out an upgrade to ORION, which shortened routes by an average of two to four miles per driver and rerouted drivers based on changing conditions.
"Historic technologies would be static and run the night before," Mattson said. If orders changed or construction started, the tech wouldn't account for those changes.
Today's AI models, on the other hand, adjust in real time.
"Compared to pre-AI methods that relied on static routing rules or dispatcher intuition, our platform now responds dynamically to real-world conditions at scale," said Andrew Leone, the CEO and cofounder of Dispatch, a last-mile delivery platform.
Dispatch uses AI to plan routes based on factors such as traffic, delivery windows, estimated time per stop, and driver capacity. More efficient routes can lower fuel costs, improve density, and enable more deliveries in a day, increasing revenue for providers.
Amazon has been at the forefront of bringing AI into its last mile, said Jett McCandless, the founder and CEO of project44, a supply chain software platform. Last month, Amazon announced an initiative called Wellspring, which uses generative AI to analyze satellite images, apartment building layouts, street imagery, consumer instructions, and photos from past deliveries. It can recommend which parking spot or apartment building entrance a driver should use to drop off a shipment. In a test this past fall, the tech identified parking spots at 4 million home addresses.
Veho uses AI for quality assurance on its deliveries. In an ideal world, Cook said, an employee dedicated to quality assurance tasks would look at the geocode of where a parcel was left, examine the delivery photo, gather feedback from the driver, and determine if anything should change for future deliveries.
"It's totally infeasible to do that on millions of deliveries. But those are the types of use cases that we see, in the very near term, that AI is ideal for," Cook said.
Delivery data also allows last-mile providers to keep consumers informed. Deliveright, a last-mile delivery service, saw customer service calls drop by 80% due to real-time tracking and more accurate ETAs, according to Doug Ladden, Deliveright's CEO.
Veho said that its large language model, which it created in-house, answers 60% of customer and driver questions and has cut average response times from 2.5 minutes to 15 seconds.
Predicting and preventing package mishaps
Veho uses AI to pinpoint commonalities among mishaps that occurred during the logistics process, like the same warehouse associate handling multiple packages that resulted in errors, or a trucking company in the middle mile that had damaged items.
The company forecasts the likelihood of issues for specific routes or deliveries. Then it makes decisions based on the patterns, like moving packages to different facilities or increasing rates on a certain route, so drivers will be incentivized to pick them up earlier in the day.
"We've taken that a step further now to where we're trying to predict defects," Cook said.
Swiped packages are a big issue in last-mile deliveries, with 58 million parcels stolen from doorsteps last year amounting to $16 billion in losses, according to a USPS watchdog report.
UPS created an AI-based software, DeliveryDefense, that analyzes historic factors such as loss frequency and delivery attempts. The AI then spots areas that could be targets for porch pirates in the future.
McCandless said AI can predict high-risk areas and times of day, allowing companies to plan delivery schedules and routes accordingly to minimize the chance a package might be stolen.
"AI could play a key role in identifying patterns, helping to prevent theft before it happens," McCandless said.

A new baked potato shop opened in Niagara-on-the-Lake today and offered comfort food with enough toppings to warrant a second fork. Scrape restaurant was opened by Gizem Afsar, former executive chef at St. Catharines' Dispatch restaurant, and her husband, Emre, following the restaurant's closure in March. Located at 207 Victoria St. in Old Town, the restaurant's menu is built around loaded baked potatoes, with touches of Turkish flavour inspired by Afsar's roots. It's open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. until mid-fall, with hours to be determined after that. 'We put all our hearts and effort into this place,' said Afsar. 'I hope we can be here for years and years.' Each dish, except for one, starts with a russet potato base topped with butter and cheese, with the option to upgrade to a sweet potato. Customers can choose from house creations or build their own. 'Sort of a street food, but our way,' said Afsar. The surprise menu item, 'The Cool One,' is a sourdough brioche filled with housemade mascarpone ice cream and assorted sauces. This one doesn't include a potato. In fact, Afsar said it's the only item on the menu that doesn't. Afsar's personal favourite is 'The Summer One,' she said, which is topped with roasted zucchini, eggplant, peppers, tomato sauce and a cucumber-yogurt salad — a mix of flavours she grew up with in Turkey. 'It's sort of like my childhood,' she said, adding that another item, the carrot tarator, follows one of her family's original recipes. But if you're after the most popular picks, she said those would be 'The Wild One' and 'The Runny One,' featuring truffle-parmesan and breakfast-inspired flavours, respectively. After Dispatch closed, Afsar and her husband set out to build something of their own and said choosing the right place was key. 'We fell in love with Niagara-on-the-Lake when we first came in,' she said. 'I'm like, 'We need to do this.' She said she enjoys the opportunity NOTL provides to serve a mix of locals and tourists. The couple got the keys to the building on April 1 and spent three months renovating the space. 'It's been a huge three-month renovation,' said Afsar, adding that much of the shop's interior was built by Emre by hand, with help from a cousin. 'We are hoping to turn it into a chain,' she said. Water reforms will help speed up housebuilding and ease wild swimmers' fears that they might be bathing in sewage, the Environment Secretary has said. Steve Reed described supply and sewage infrastructure as 'critical for housing development, economic development and economic growth', as he took questions about the Independent Water Commission's final report published on Monday. Mr Reed told MPs the Government would publish a white paper this autumn, with proposals in response to the review led by Sir Jon Cunliffe, and teased plans for a new water reform Bill. In the Commons, Labour MP Allison Gardner warned that 'antiquated mains water infrastructure cannot adequately cope with the increased demand of new housing developments, even when the developer meets all the required mitigations'. The Stoke-on-Trent South MP asked: 'Does the minister agree with me that with the Government's plan to build 1.5 million homes, it is vital that privatised water companies ensure that they can adequately meet systems demand without sewage dumping, prioritising this over profiteering?' Conservative MP for Exmouth and Exeter East, David Reed, later said some billpayers feared water companies might not 'keep pace with development' in their area. Responding to the Labour MP, Mr Reed said: 'Water infrastructure is critical for housing development, economic development and economic growth in every single region of the country. 'I've accepted in principle, today, one of Sir Jon's recommendations that will allow us to align for the first time water infrastructure investment and spatial planning so that those homes and factories can be built faster to the benefit of local people.' In his report, Sir Jon wrote that 'planning for the water system should be closely aligned with other spatial planning'. This could involve requiring town halls to ask water firms what they need before agreeing their local planning policies. Samantha Niblett said wild swimmers in Derbyshire and Staffordshire 'frequently have to avoid a Trent tan' when they are in the water. The Labour MP for South Derbyshire asked: 'Does the Secretary of State agree with me that by having cleaner waters we can encourage more great exercise like this to make a healthier – and improve the wellbeing of – our country?' Mr Reed replied: 'The Trent tan is a very alarming and graphic image but it does capture what has gone wrong with our water sector for so long. 'The changes we're announcing today will clean up our waterways across the country, so that wild swimmers as well as many other people who like to enjoy our precious rivers, lakes and seas can get on and enjoy them without the kind of concern that she's alluding to.' The Environment Secretary also rejected the suggestion that ministers should take water firms into public ownership. Clive Lewis, the Labour MP for Norwich South, said the review 'feels like a missed opportunity for the Government to show the public whose side it's on'. He said: 'It entrenches a privatised model that has already failed economically, environmentally and democratically, with 20-50% of bills going on servicing debt. 'Why if public ownership is good enough for rail, good enough for GB Energy and renewables, is it not good enough for water?' Mr Reed said the Government had to 'take a rational and not an ideological approach to tackling this problem', and added Government officials had calculated that 'nationalising the water companies would cost £100 billion'. He continued: 'And to pay that money, we'd have to take it away from public services like the National Health Service and education in order to hand it to the owners of companies that have been polluting our waterways. 'That makes no sense to me, it makes no sense to the public. Frankly, I'm surprised it makes any sense to him.' Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay said Sir Jon's report 'looks at how to tinker' with the system and added: 'It's a moribund model that has resulted in billions being paid out to shareholders, billions of debt being loaded up, and neglecting crucial infrastructure, meaning that sewage is regularly pumped into our rivers and seas. 'So, does the Secretary of State accept that the cost of this failure must be part of the calculation in determining the cost of bringing water into public hands where it belongs, and that figures like £100 billion are grossly inflated by those who don't think the water industry should pay for this greed and terrible mismanagement of our water systems?' The Environment Secretary said it would take 'years to unpick the current models of ownership, during which time, pollution in our rivers would get much worse not better'. He said: 'He's talking about cutting the National Health Service, giving £100 billion to the owners of the current water companies, and making pollution far worse – doesn't sound very Green to me.'
