Football is chaos – Sarina Wiegman hails ‘incredible' European title defence
Chloe Kelly coolly converted the winning penalty as the Lionesses defeated world champions Spain 3-1 in the shootout, having played out a 1-1 draw over 120 minutes in the Basel final. Wiegman's side lost their opener to France and needed extra time in all of their games after the group stage in Switzerland, but emerged victorious in the most nail-biting and dramatic fashion. The 55-year-old, who has now won the last three Women's European Championships – previously with Netherlands in 2017 and England in 2022 – said on BBC One: 'I can't believe it. The word 'team' really described who we are – a team. 'We said we can win by any means and that's what we have shown again today. I am so proud of the team and the staff. It is incredible. 'I just can't believe it, but I have a medal around my neck and we have a trophy. It has been the most chaotic tournament on the pitch – all the challenges we had on the pitch against our opponents. 'From the first game it was chaos. Losing your first game and becoming European champions is incredible. Football is chaos.'

‘You dug deep': Starmer leads tributes to England women after Euros triumph
Keir Starmer led the tributes to the England women's national football team after they overcame Spain to win back-to-back European Championships. The Lionesses became the first England team – men's or women's – to win a major competition on foreign soil, with Chloe Kelly's penalty enough to give them a 3-1 penalty shootout win after the game finished 1-1 after extra time. The prime minister congratulated the team on 'digging deep' to retain their Euros crown. 'Champions! Congratulations Lionesses – what a team. What a game. What drama,' Starmer said in a post on X. 'You dug deep when it mattered most and you've made the nation proud. History makers.' King Charles sent his 'heartfelt congratulations' to the team and their manager, Sarina Wiegman, in a message posted on X. 'For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant 'football's coming home'. As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true.' More figures from the sporting world and beyond sent their congratulations to the England women's team. Fara Williams, who holds the record for most caps for the England women's senior team with 172, posted a video of her celebrating in the stadium with the words: 'Yessssss back-to-back champions'. The former Arsenal striker Ian Wright said: 'Chloe Kelly is clutch. She's done it all the way through the tournament. She's come off the bench throughout the tournament and she's not mentioned it once. 'She's delivered every single time.' The deputy prime minister, Angela Rayner, posted on X: 'You did it! What an incredible performance from our Lionesses! 'You've made history and the whole nation proud! Absolutely phenomenal. Thank you for inspiring millions and bringing it home!' Sarina Wiegman's three-word conclusion says it all after Lionesses' Euro 2025 success
Sarina Wiegman has achieved one of the most ridiculous trophy hauls in the world of football, winning her THIRD successive European Championships, having led the Lionesses to 2021 and 2025 glory, after guiding Netherlands to victory in 2017 Sarina Wiegman could only conclude that 'football is chaos' after her England team's dramatic Euro 2025 triumph. The Lionesses led for barely a minute during the entire knockout stages in Switzerland, but that didn't matter as they came from behind time after time. 'I just can't believe it, but I have a medal around my neck and we have a trophy,' Wiegman said. 'It has been the most chaotic tournament on the pitch – all the challenges we had on the pitch against our opponents. 'From the first game it was chaos. Losing your first game and becoming European Champions is incredible. Football is chaos.' After losing that opener against France, England needed wins against the Netherlands and Wales just to reach the knockout stages. There, they came from behind to beat Sweden on penalties and Italy in extra-time. The final against Spain also went to penalties, after Lionesses star Alessia Russo cancelled out Mariona Caldentey's first-half opener. And Wiegman hailed the collective spirit of her side as goalkeeper Hannah Hampton saved two Spanish penalties before Chloe Kelly scored the decisive spot-kick. 'I can't believe it. The word 'team' really described who we are – a team,' the manager said after her players defended their Euros crown. 'We said we can win by any means and that's what we have shown again today. I am so proud of the team and the staff. It is incredible.' It was Spain who came out on top against England in the 2023 World Cup final, but Wiegman's team got their revenge at St Jakob-Park And it was a third straight Euros for manager Wiegman after her 2022 triumph with England and a 2017 success in charge of the Netherlands. England hero Hampton was so caught up in the moment that she had to check with fans to be certain Kelly's penalty would win it. 'When Chloe stepped up I turned around to the fans, miming a kick and trying to ask if we score do we win, I'd completely lost track,' she said. 'They were just cheering at me so I didn't know what the answer was, but then I saw that run up and that was it, we've won. I can't believe it.'
