Yahoo5 hours ago

NEW YORK , June 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- As Congress works to set funding levels for the National Institutes of Health, The American Parkinson Disease Association, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research and The Parkinson's Foundation call on lawmakers to ensure that a robustly funded, collaborative NIH — the essential engine of medical progress and hope for millions of Americans — is a cornerstone of the nation's budget today and in the future.
Decades of dedicated scientific investigation and bipartisan support for NIH have advanced the search for next-generation treatments and brought us to the brink of transformative breakthroughs in Parkinson's care.
Sustained federal investment also has contributed to recent discoveries that have unlocked brand-new understanding of shared biology across the major brain diseases, positioning the field to make even more rapid gains within the next decade. Any reorganization of NIH must be guided by these new scientific insights— with input from patients and families — to deliver mutually beneficial outcomes.
It is imperative that we preserve and build on this progress by increasing investment in our national scientific enterprise through NIH on behalf of the 1 million Americans living with Parkinson's, their families and the millions more whose lives are touched by neurodegenerative disease, such as Lewy body dementia and Alzheimer's disease. This is the future our country needs and deserves.
Our organizations have demonstrated the power of public-private partnership to drive scientific progress, delivering results for patients and families. We and our nationwide network of advocates will support every effort to keep this critical work moving forward through the appropriations process and in any consideration of a reorganization of NIH. We trust our nation's leaders to join us in this vital mission.

Anaplastic Astrocytoma

This rare, aggressive type of cancerous brain tumor can cause headaches, seizures, and changes in behavior or cognitive (thinking) function. Treatment involves surgery combined with radiation and chemotherapy. Astrocytomas are a type of brain tumor. They develop in star-shaped brain cells called astrocytes, which form part of the tissue that protects the nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord. Astrocytomas are classified by their grade — grade 1 and 2 astrocytomas grow slowly, while grade 3 and 4 astrocytomas grow faster and more aggressively. An anaplastic astrocytoma is a grade 3 astrocytoma. While rare, this type of cancerous tumor can be very serious without treatment. Keep reading to learn more about anaplastic astrocytomas, including their symptoms and the survival rates of people who have them. What are the symptoms? The symptoms of an anaplastic astrocytoma can vary based on exactly where the tumor is, but generally include: headaches lethargy or drowsiness nausea or vomiting behavioral changes memory loss seizures vision problems coordination and balance problems What causes it? Researchers aren't sure what causes anaplastic astrocytomas. However, they may be associated with: genetic abnormalities immune system abnormalities environmental factors, such as exposure to UV rays and certain chemicals lifestyle factors, such as diet or stress People with certain genetic disorders, such as neurofibromatosis type I (NF1), Li-Fraumeni syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis, have a higher risk of developing anaplastic astrocytoma. If you've had radiation therapy on your brain, you may also be at a higher risk. How is it diagnosed? Anaplastic astrocytomas are rare, so your doctor will start by discussing your medical history and performing a physical exam to identify any other possible causes of your symptoms. They may also use a neurological exam to see how your nervous system is working. This usually involves testing your balance, coordination, and reflexes. You may be asked to answer some basic questions so they can evaluate your speech and mental clarity. If your doctor thinks you may have a tumor, they'll likely use imaging such as an MRI scan or CT scan to examine a picture of your brain. If you do have an anaplastic astrocytoma, these images will also show its size and exact location. In some cases, doctors use a PET scan or SPECT scan. These metabolic scans look at cellular activity in the brain rather than the detailed anatomy seen on an MRI. These tests can sometimes be helpful for assessing tumor cells. A biopsy may also be part of the diagnostic process and can involve removing as much of the tumor as possible. How is it treated? There are several options for treating an anaplastic astrocytoma, depending on the size, location, and grade of the tumor. Surgery Surgery is usually the first step in treating an anaplastic astrocytoma. In some cases, your doctor may be able to remove all or as much of the tumor as possible. However, anaplastic astrocytomas may grow in areas of the brain that are not safe or accessible for surgery, so your doctor may only be able to safely remove part of the tumor. Tumor cells that remain because they were not identified or were surgically inaccessible can grow quickly after surgery. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy If your tumor can't be removed with surgery or was only partially removed, you may need follow-up treatment. Radiation therapy destroys cells, especially rapidly dividing cancer cells. This will help shrink the tumor or destroy some or all of the cells that weren't removed during surgery. Anticancer drugs are referred to as chemotherapy and may be used with or after radiation therapy to continue treatment. Some people may also be treated with: epilepsy medication hydrocephalus treatment steroids physical therapy Survival rate and life expectancy According to the American Cancer Society, the 5-year relative survival rate for people with an anaplastic astrocytoma is as follows: 58% for those ages 22 to 44 29% for those ages 45 to 54 15% for those ages 55 to 64 The relative survival rate suggests how long someone with a condition may live after their diagnosis compared to those without the condition of the same race, sex, and age over a specific time. This is different from the overall survival rate, which is a percentage of people still alive for a specific time after diagnosis of a condition. It's most important to remember that these figures are estimates, and everyone is different. You can talk with your doctor about your specific condition. Several factors can affect your survival rate, including: the size, location, and grade of your tumor whether the tumor was completely or partially removed with surgery whether the tumor is new or recurring your overall health Your doctor can give you a better idea of your outlook based on these factors. The takeaway Anaplastic astrocytoma is a rare, aggressive type of cancerous brain tumor. Symptoms can vary but often include headache, seizures, and changes in behavior or cognitive function.

5 Ways to Temporarily Relieve Symptoms of Cystic Acne

Tea tree oil, ice, probtiocs, diet changes, or a turmeric mask may temporarily help relieve symptoms of cystic acne. But a dermatologist is more likely to recommend medical approaches, such as topical medications. Cystic acne typically develops deep below your skin's surface due to oil, bacteria, or dead skin cells getting trapped in a hair follicle or pore. Cysts can form anywhere on your body, but typically appear on your face, neck, back, shoulders, or arms. They resemble boils and are painful to the touch. Although some of the ingredients in these home remedies may demonstrate some healing properties, none of them are scientifically proven to be an effective treatment for cystic acne. Before trying any of these remedies, discuss their use with a doctor or dermatologist. Home remedies should not replace medical treatment and are not clinically proven. Cystic acne often requires professional care. Remember: These home remedies will not treat a cyst, but some can help provide temporary symptom relief. Diet According to the American Academy of Dermatology, cow's milk and ultra-processed foods high in sugar may lead to acne breakouts. However, there's still no evidence that other dairy products, such as yogurt and cheese, may be associated with acne. If you believe that ultra-processed foods and cow's milk may be related to your breakouts, you can try eliminating them from your diet for 3 weeks. If you don't observe any new breakouts in this period, it may be an indication that those foods or drinks may trigger your cystic acne. »More on this: Is There a Link Between Dairy and Acne? Turmeric mask Turmeric has a reputation for being anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, so some claim that a turmeric mask may help treat cystic acne. Mix small amounts of water with turmeric powder to create a thick paste. Then, apply this paste directly to the cyst and leave it in place for about 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing it off. You can do this two or three times per week. Applying turmeric directly to the skin can cause irritation, staining, or an allergic reaction, so perform a patch test beforehand and always be sure to check with your doctor before trying. Probiotics Some research suggests a link between skin health and gut health. If your gut microbiome becomes unbalanced, which your diet plays a role in, you may see more acne breakouts. According to a 2018 research review, oral probiotics may help with more than just acne, including: atopic dermatitis bacterial vaginosis vulvovaginal candidiasis eczema You can prioritize probiotic foods, such as: yogurt kimchi kefir A daily dose of oral probiotics may also help encourage clearer skin and reduce skin inflammation. However, how much you should take differs for everyone, so you should consult a doctor before supplementing. Tea tree oil Tea tree oil may have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests that these properties could make this essential oil good for healing acne lesions, but the study mentions that not enough evidence is available to develop a recommendation on the use of topical tea tree oil. Before using tea tree oil on your skin, speak with your doctor or dermatologist and perform a patch test. Essential oils are very potent on their own. When applying tea tree oil to your skin, dilute 1 to 2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil, such as jojoba or argan oil. You can also add 1 to 2 drops to a moisturizer. You should always dilute tea tree oil before using it on skin. Tea tree oil is not safe to use if you're pregnant. When to seek medical help If you have a cyst that doesn't go away within a few days, shows signs of infection, or causes severe pain, you should speak with a doctor or dermatologist immediately. They may be able to drain the cyst properly or use a steroid injection to help reduce the inflammation. If the cyst worsens after using home remedies, speak with a doctor or dermatologist right away. Medical treatment options for cystic acne A doctor or dermatologist will likely suggest avoiding home remedies for cystic acne. These options may not be strong enough to treat cystic acne, may only provide temporary symptom relief, or may make it worse. Instead, a doctor might recommend the following medical treatments: azelaic acid isotretinoin oral antibiotics, such as doxycycline, minocycline, or sarecycline spironolactone topical retinoids birth control They may also recommend treatments such as light-based therapy (laser or photodynamic) or steroid injections into cystic and nodular lesions.

Bear in Duluth fitted with "largest veterinary crown" in the world, zoo says

A brown bear in northern Minnesota has made "dental history" after receiving a full metal crown that is the first of its kind, according to zoo staff. On Monday, Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth announced that the bear, named Tundra, needed the dental procedure after fracturing his tooth back in 2023. Although he underwent a successful root canal following the initial injury, he later reinjured the area. The huge crown, which the zoo says is the "largest veterinary crown" in the world, was created to help protect Tundra's tooth for the rest of his life. The procedure was led by Dr. Grace Brown, who is the only privately-owned and board-certified veterinary dentist in the state, the zoo said. Lake Superior Zoo "We are incredibly proud of the collaboration between Minnesota Veterinary Dental Specialists, Creature Crowns, iM3, and our zoo team. All of Tundra's care was donated — and we couldn't be more grateful," the zoo wrote in a social media post. The zoo encourages people to come visit to check out Tundra's "history-making smile."
