Salernitana players hospitalised with food poisoning after Samp play-off

Salernitana players have been hospitalised with food poisoning after returning south from a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their Serie B relegation play-off with Sampdoria.
Salernitana said on Monday that training had been cancelled after 21 people among the playing and training staff picked up 'serious food poisoning' which caused illness during Sunday's trip back to Salerno from northern port city Genoa.
'The situation required the intervention of ambulances on arrival at Salerno airport and the hospitalisation of a significant number of those concerned,' added Salernitana.
Italian media report that 16 people were hospitalised, eight of them from the playing squad, and that police had visited the hotel where Salernitana players stayed ahead of the first leg and which prepared the team's in-flight meal for the return to Salerno.
Samp was relegated to the third tier for the first time in its history last month, only to be saved by a points deduction for Brescia which bumped the 1991 Italian champion into one of the division's two relegation play-off positions.
The second leg of the play-off is scheduled for Friday night, but Salernitana haS asked that the match be pushed back to a later date following the rash of food poisoning.

'We are very concerned about what happened and the series of events which risk undermining our ability to face the final minutes of this season in a normal and calm way,' said Salernitana.
One of seven Italian clubs which has played all its football in the top two divisions, Sampdoria was relegated to Serie B in 2023. It was close to going bust before being saved by current president Matteo Manfredi and former Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani, who has since exited the club.
The club's current majority shareholder is Singaporean businessman Joseph Tey.
Club icons Alberico Evani and Attilio Lombardo were hired as coaches in April in an attempt to save Sampdoria from the drop after significant transfer market activity both last summer and in January.
Evani is Sampdoria's fourth head coach of the season after Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Sottil and Leonardo Semplice.

F1 Canadian Grand Prix 2025: Winner Russell driving better than ever, but title a long shot

George Russell said he was driving better than ever and ready to fight for a Formula One championship with Mercedes after taking the team's first win of the season in Canada, but this year still looks like a long shot. The Briton, out of contract at the end of 2025 but confident of staying, recognised any title chance this season would probably require the McLaren drivers to make mistakes and drop points. McLaren's Lando Norris and championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri collided in Montreal, with the former retiring from the race while the Australian moved 22 points clear after 10 of 24 rounds. Russell is fourth overall but still a mighty 62 points behind Piastri, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen is third. 'I don't really know how Max and I are so close to those two (McLaren drivers) because they clearly have the most dominant car,' said Russell. 'I think the two of us have been very consistent and getting the maximum result from our packages week in, week out. But I can't imagine them to continue throwing away points in the manner they're doing. 'Of course, we hope that continues to be the case, but I don't foresee us getting in the championship fight through pure pace as Lando did last year. We'll only be there if results like today continue or things like today continue to happen.' ALSO READ | George Russell holds off Max Verstappen for win as McLarens collide Russell was sure Sunday's result would help the negotiations for a new deal, although he had no concerns despite continuing chatter about a possible move for four-time champion Verstappen. 'I know I'm going to be on the grid next year. I feel that I'm driving better than ever. I still feel I've got more in the tank,' said the Briton. 'I feel ready to fight for a world championship.' Russell said he was not talking with anyone other than Mercedes, there was no rush and he planned to stay. 'There haven't been any hard feelings with any of the talks that have been going around, especially around Max,' he added. 'If every driver had no contract for next year, Max would be number one for every single team. And that's understandable. But ultimately, there are two seats for every race team. I know if I continue to perform as I'm doing, my position would not be under threat whatsoever. So, I feel in a good place.' Russell said he and 18-year-old Italian rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli, third on Sunday, were doing the job and 'why would you want to change something that's working?'

Why Italy feel 2006 World Cup-winner Gennaro Gattuso is the right man to lead Azzurri

Italy appointed former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, who has managed leading clubs such as AC Milan and Napoli in the past, as their new coach after Luciano Spalletti was sacked following a 0-3 defeat to Norway in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers. read more Gennaro Gattuso was named the new coach of the Italian men's football team after the FIGC decided to sack Luciano Spalletti. AP In their desperation to avoid missing out on the FIFA World Cup for a third consecutive time, the Italian football federation (FIGC) named former Milan and Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso as Italy's coach on Sunday. The development comes a week after Luciano Spalletti was sacked from the post after two years in charge following a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Norway on Saturday, 7 June during the ongoing Qualifiers for next year's FIFA World Cup. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Former midfielder Gattuso was part of the Marcello Lippi-coached Italian team that had defeated France on penalties to win the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. More from Football And the Italian federation is hopeful of the fact that the 47-year-old, who had coached Napoli to the Coppa Italia title in 2020, will be able to pull off something similar as manager, provided Azzurri are able to qualify for the tournament. FIGC president Gabriele Gravina, for one, describes Gattuso as a 'symbol of Italian football', and is banking on his 'professionalism and experience' for the four-time world champions to return to the World Cup after a 12-year gap. 'Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football – the blue jersey is like a second skin for him. His motivations, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the upcoming commitments of the National Team,' Gravina said in an official statement on Gattuso's appointment. 'Aware of the importance of the objective we want to achieve, I thank him for the availability and total dedication with which he has received this challenge, sharing the FIGC project for the overall development of our football, in which the blue jersey plays a strategic central role,' he added. Can Gattuso keep Italy's World Cup dream alive? After failing to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups – while winning the Euro in 2021 – Italy began their qualification campaign for next year's tournament that will be jointly hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico with a lopsided defeat against Norway, in which Manchester City star Erling Haaland scored the third goal. Spalletti, who was informed of his ouster after the 3-0 defeat, oversaw a 2-0 win over Moldova in his final game in charge. Despite the win coming against a side ranked 154th in the world, it has brought Italy's campaign back on track and revived their hopes of reaching the Finals. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The first round of the UEFA leg of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers comprises 12 groups – six of them have four teams each and the remaining have an additional team. Italy are part of Group I, a five-team group in which they currently are ranked third with three points after their victory over Moldova. Each team plays the remaining sides twice on a home-and-away basis. The format of the UEFA World Cup qualifiers is such that the 12 group winners gain direct entry into the tournament while the runners-up will be joined by the four best-placed teams amongst UEFA Nations League group winners which finished outside the top two in their World Cup Qualifying group. Italy had finished second in their Nations League group last year, meaning they will have to finish among the top two for them to keep their World Cup dream alive. They face Israel and Estonia, currently ranked second and fourth respectively in their group, in their next fixtures in September and victories in those games should boost their chances of a top-two finish. F1 Canadian Grand Prix: Tough talks ahead but McLaren want drivers to race each other

McLaren will continue to let Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris race freely for the Formula One title, but there will be some tough talks back at the factory after Sunday's collision in Canada. Norris accepted the blame after hitting the rear of his championship-leading Australian teammate's car while trying to overtake in a battle for fourth place three laps from the finish. The incident between the title frontrunners, with Piastri extending his lead to 22 points while Norris failed to score, was the talk of the paddock at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and had been long predicted. McLaren principal Andrea Stella said the team would discuss once the dust had settled how to prevent it from happening again. 'Definitely there will be good conversations, but they will happen once we are all rested and calm,' the Italian told reporters. He said the team would seek to 'preserve our parity and equality in terms of how we go racing at McLaren between our two drivers'. 'The being free to race and the being clear as to how we go racing is a value of racing,' he added. 'It is a value of racing that we want to try and exercise and respect as much as we can, rather than every time we have a proximity between the two cars then having control from the pit wall. 'We want to give Lando and Oscar opportunities to race and opportunities to be at the end of the season in the position that they deserve to be in.' Stella said the points should reflect the drivers' performance rather than any team orders. ALSO READ | Oscar Piastri accepts Lando Norris apology after collision 'This is not necessarily a simple and straight exercise but we want to try and do it as best as we can,' he said. 'So I don't foresee that today's episode will change our approach from this point of view. 'If anything it will reinforce and it will strengthen that the principles we have require more caution by our drivers.' Stella said the incident was a simple misjudgement of distance rather than an aggressive statement of intent and he appreciated Norris' ownership of responsibility. He recognised the Briton's confidence could be dented, with the driver always open in his emotions and prone to blaming himself in a title battle increasingly going Piastri's way, but Norris could count on every support. 'On this one I want to be completely clear,' said Stella. 'It's full support to Lando. We will have conversations and the conversations may be even tough. But there's no doubt over the support we give to Lando. 'Lando himself will have to show his character to overcome this kind of episode. Make sure that he only takes the learnings, he only takes what will make him a stronger driver.' Piastri has won five of the 10 races so far to Norris' two with 14 remaining. The next race is in Austria on June 29.
