Expanded immunisation service under UIP launched
The State health department launched the expanded the immunisation services under the Universal Immunisation Programme at all 500 functional health and welfare centres on Wednesday.
Health minister M. Subramanian, who launched the programme at a HWC centre in T. Nagar said to achieve 100% coverage of routine immunisation for vaccine preventable diseases in the state, all the UIP vaccines would be made available in all HWCs on every Wednesday. Such an arrangement is currently available in all the 2,286 Primary Health Centres.
The government will soon be commissioning another 208 HWCs and the vaccines will be administered there as well, he added.
The minister said under the UIP, 11 vaccines are provided to children and pregnant women against 12 vaccine preventable diseases. In 15 endemic districts vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is also provided. According to him the state consistently achieved immunisation coverage of over 99% annually, with around 9.5 lakh pregnant women and 8.76 lakh children/infants being administered the vaccines under UIP.
Immunisation sessions will be offered daily in all primary health centres, paediatric units of government medical colleges, district headquarters, taluk and non-taluk hospitals. Every Wednesday outreach sessions will be held in villages and towns.
The cold chain is maintained for the vaccines being supplied by the Union government, the minister explained. They are transported through refrigerated vans to regional vaccine stores and then distributed to the district vaccine stores, Mr. Subramanian informed.
Senior health department officials, including the health secretary, the director of public health, the director of National Health Mission besides health officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation were present at the launch.

MBBS, BDS applications to open from Friday
Chennai: Applications for MBBS/BDS admissions to state-run govt, self-financing colleges, and private universities will be available for download from Friday, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said on Wednesday. There will be no additions to the number of seats this year in govt or self-financing medical colleges, officials said "The applications were made available only after the declaration of NEET results in the past year," he said. "When the NEET exam results are delayed due to various reasons, the time limit for students to apply is reduced too. Students face a lot of difficulties when they must apply in a short time," Subramanian said. The Directorate of Medical Education will make applications available online for admission to govt and management quota seats, he said. "This process will allow committee to have adequate time to verify and remove fake applications," he said. Students need not provide NEET scores at the time of applying. "The selection committee will obtain NEET scores based on the roll number on the admit card uploaded by the student. The application period will be extended for students who wish to submit their applications after the NEET exam results are released. The state will give up to five days after the NEET exam results are released," he said after the consultative meeting for the allocation of govt and administrative quota seats in private medical colleges for 2025-26 at the Tamil Nadu Govt Multi-Specialty Hospital, Omandurar Govt Estate. The state has asked self-financing medical colleges and private universities to openly declare other fees such as transport and hostel fees, he said after finalising the seat allocation for the year 2025-26.

Trees, oxygen banks to save city from heat, polluted air
Varanasi: To mitigate threat of rising atmospheric temperature and climate change, govt is conducting large-scale tree-planting campaign. Three new forest areas are being developed in Varanasi, while 5.617 hectares of forest have already been developed in nine locations. The most unique and far-reaching aspect of this ambitious govt campaign is development of 'natural oxygen bank,' also known as 'lungs of the city' aimed at reducing pollution and providing clean air. Govt is running programmes like National Clean Air Mission, forest fund financing and municipal corporation financing to maintain environmental protection and pure oxygen in the atmosphere. Under this plan, dense forests are being developed using the Miyawaki technique in various city locations. Since 2020-21, 1,70,246 trees planted in nine locations turned into dense forests," said the DFO, adding that tree planting began at three new locations, including Ramna STP Plant and Banas Dairy Amul. Soil work is underway near Shankar Netralaya by NHAI, where planting will take place soon. Miyawaki method involves planting grass, herbs, shrubs, and small, medium, and large trees. She said after planting 81,000 trees across three locations on 2.7 hectares, the city's landscape will change. Near Ramna STP, 30,000 trees are being planted on 1 hectare, transforming the area into a dense green zone. A total of 45,000 trees are being planted on 1.5 hectare in Karkhiyav Industrial Area near Banas Dairy to reduce industrial pollution, while 6,000 trees are being planted on 0.2 hectare near Shankar Netralaya by NHAI.
