Man gets 13 months in prison for fatal head-on crash in North Stonington that killed father of 3
A man has been sentenced to more than a year in prison after being convicted of causing a fatal head-on crash in North Stonington in 2021.
James Pont, 63, of Ashaway, Rhode Island faced sentencing on Wednesday in New London Superior Court where a judge handed down three years in prison, suspended after service of 13 months, and three years of probation, according to the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice.
The sentencing came after a jury on Feb 26 found him guilty on one count of negligent homicide with a motor vehicle.
According to DCJ officials, evidence at trial showed that Pont was driving on Pendleton Hill Road on Jan. 18, 2021, at 3:26 p.m. when he crossed the yellow center lines and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by 39-year-old Ryan Poland of North Providence, Rhode Island. Poland's 2006 Honda Civic was headed north, and a 1995 GMC Safari driven by Pont was traveling south when the two vehicles collided, according to Courant reporting. The collision occurred near the on-ramp to I-95 at Exit 92.
Poland was taken to Westerly Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Pont was seriously injured and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
Pont was arrested after an investigation by the Connecticut State Police Collision, Analysis and Reconstruction Squad and the Troop E barracks.
'The New London State's Attorney's Office would like to thank C.A.R.S. and Connecticut State Police Troop E for their work in this case,' the DCJ wrote in a statement. 'The New London State's Attorney's Office hopes that this disposition brings some comfort to the family of Mr. Poland.'
The case was prosecuted by Assistant State's Attorney Alexandra N. Aksterowicz, with assistance from Inspector Matthew T. Suplee.
According to an obituary, Poland left behind three children. He was raised in Barrington, Rhode Island and had a deep love for fishing and a passion for cooking, music and gardening. He was also a songwriter and a musician, the obituary said.
Poland was employed by Jesmac Builders for 18 years, according to the obituary.

Beckinsale further alleges that despite the repeated concerns, the producers "continued to recklessly and intentionally forge ahead with unsafe filming conditions, forgoing safety to maintain profit margins, and in the process, put Ms. Beckinsale in harm's way." Beckinsale first took action against the film's producers in December, initially filing as a Jane Doe but in the newly amended complaint, details her on-set injury and several communications between her team and the film's producers. The complaint claims that Beckinsale's team reached out to producers several times to express their concerns. At one point, Beckinsale's agent, Shani Rosenzweig, wrote in an email to Zois, "No one is actually taking real action to put a plan in place to fix this situation so it never happens again… [Ms. Beckinsale] keeps showing up to set for her call time and everyone around her has been made aware it's going to be a 15 hour [or more] day except for her." Rosenzweig demanded immediate action to address the unsafe conditions, asking Zois to explain his plans for course correcting and adding, "If you're trying to kill a person, you're doing a great job." Per the complaint, Zois responded, "I don't know what else to say other than you're right," and agreed to shorten Beckinsale's work days, calling the pace of production "unsustainable." But Beckinsale's attorneys claim that "set conditions continued to be dangerous," despite Zois's promise, "with production staff routinely pushing Ms. Beckinsale to shoot for fifteen hourdays, and perform dangerous action sequences, without pre-clearing or pre-training." In December 2022, Beckinsale suffered a complex meniscus tear in her left knee while filming. The injury required surgery and halted production for months. Before returning to set, Beckinsale's surgeon insisted that the actress not be asked to perform stunts involving running, jumping, harness suspension, squatting, or kicking. This request was allegedly disregarded. Beckinsale's complaint claims that she suffered further aggravation of the knee injury as her doctors orders were repeatedly ignored and she was allegedly coerced into performing "unsafe action sequences." "I'm grateful to Blake Lively for highlighting the fact that this is not an archaic problem that no one's facing," Beckinsale said. "This is continuing. And then when it does happen, a machine goes into place to absolutely destroy you. And I'm sure that's the case in other industries as well. And it's just got to stop."The video also saw her outline some instances of on-set abuse. Though she did not specify the projects, Beckinsale claimed that on the set of two films, she was put in a "very unsafe fight situation," and on one of them, was "gaslit and made to feel like I was the problem" after being injured. Warren man pleads not guilty to charges in crash that injured woman
WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — A Warren man was arraigned on charges stemming from a December crash that sent an 18-year-old woman to the hospital with injuries. Dennis Currey Jr., 23, is charged with OVI and aggravated vehicular assault. According to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Currey was driving a 2009 Nissan Altima that crashed into the back end of a 2010 Honda Civic, driven by an 18-year-old woman from Southington. The report states that both vehicles were traveling northbound on state Route 11 in Liberty Township on Dec. 26 when the crash occurred. The force of the crash pushed the Civic into the median, and the driver was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with what was reported as suspected serious injuries. The Highway Patrol's report states that Currey's blood-alcohol content was .161, double the legal driving limit of .08. A Trumbull County grand jury returned an indictment in the case last month. Currey pleaded not guilty to the charges in Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas on Wednesday, and bond was set at $5,000. Currey is scheduled to appear in court again on July 30. Man arrested in connection to 2023 crash that left East Haven cyclist dead
EAST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A North Haven man was charged in the 2023 death of a cyclist in East Haven, police said. Stephen Cote, 35, was allegedly driving a 2008 Chevy Equinox on Foxon Road when he struck 19-year-old bicyclist Joshua Cervero on July 16, 2023. Pedestrian suffers serious injuries after being hit by vehicle in Vernon Cervero died from his injuries on July 18, 2023. Investigation revealed that Cote was allegedly traveling at an estimated 57 mph in a 35 mph zone. The right headlight was also allegedly not working before the incident. Cote was charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, traveling unreasonably fast and failure to have headlamps. He will appear in New Haven Superior Court on June 25.
