Zahid: Malaysia needs smart US strategy, driven by national interests
KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 — Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysia's diplomatic engagement with the United States must be carefully structured, guided by smart diplomacy and firmly rooted in comprehensive national interests.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said this was essential given the United States' role as a major global economic power, coupled with its evolving administrative dynamics.
He said this matter was discussed during a courtesy call by Malaysia's newly appointed Ambassador to the United States, Tan Sri Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob.
'The meeting also generally touched on the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Malaysia and the United States, particularly in areas such as investment, security, technology and strategic multidimensional cooperation that can yield mutual benefits,' he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Ahmad Zahid also hoped that Muhammad Shahrul Ikram would be granted strength and wisdom in carrying out the important responsibility and continue to excel in representing Malaysia's voice and interests on the international stage.
On June 3, the Foreign Ministry announced the appointment of Muhammad Shahrul Ikram, a former secretary-general of the ministry, as Malaysia's new Ambassador to the United States.
According to the ministry, the appointment was granted the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who presented him the instrument of appointment in a ceremony at Istana Negara on June 3. — Bernama

Ringgit closes lower ahead of US interest rate decision
KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit ended lower against the greenback today, ahead of a decision on US interest rates later today and as the war between Israel and Iran continued to escalate. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said the key indicator to watch is the 'dot plot' of the US Federal Reserve (Fed) funds rate, which essentially reflects the near-term outlook for US monetary policy. The Fed dot plot is a chart used by the US federal open market committee (FOMC) to show the individual interest rate forecasts of its members. 'It appears that the Fed may not be keen to ease monetary policy, as the risk of higher inflation remains fairly evident with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. 'Markets are bracing for the outcome of the FOMC meeting tonight,' he said. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.3% to 98.526 points despite the heightened geopolitical uncertainty. Afzanizam noted that the ringgit moved within a tight range today, hovering between RM4.2425 and RM4.2515. At 6pm, the local currency stood at 4.2500/4.2550 versus the greenback compared to yesterday's close of 4.2390/4.2475. At the close, the ringgit traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the British pound to 5.7218/5.7285 from 5.7413/5.7528, and gained vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8888/4.8945 from 4.8986/4.9084, but it depreciated versus the Japanese yen to 2.9322/2.9359 from 2.9271/2.9332 at yesterday's close. The ringgit was mostly lower against its Asean peers. It dipped versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.5/260.9 from 260.2/260.8, eased against the Singapore dollar to 3.3074/3.3115 from 3.3068/3.3137, and was down vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0240/13.0449 from 13.0114/13.0443 previously. However, it rose against the Philippine peso to 7.46/7.48 from 7.48/7.49 at yesterday's close.

Bursa opens flat, tracking Wall Street's performance
KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia was almost unchanged at the opening today, due to a lack of fresh catalysts after the flat Wall Street performance overnight, analysts said. At 9.05am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) edged up 0.02 points to 1,511.97 from yesterday's close of 1,511.95. The benchmark index opened 0.99 of-a-point higher at 1,512.94. The broader market was marginally negative, with 98 decliners outnumbering 82 gainers. Another 227 counters were unchanged, while 2,016 were untraded and 11 suspended. Turnover stood at 52.84 million shares worth RM25.57 million. Rakuten Trade's equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said that the flat Wall Street performance came after the US Federal Reserve (Fed) maintained its interest rate stance, while geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continued to draw worries. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 44 points, or 0.1%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.03%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.13%. Equities in Asia ended broadly lower yesterday as the geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remained unresolved. As a result, Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dipped 1.12%. On the local front, the FBM KLCI finished a tad higher yesterday after a roller coaster session. The low trading volume reflected investor caution, with many avoiding long positions due to persistent global risks and volatile market conditions. 'We foresee trading will remain muted following the lack of catalysts and heightened market risks. Hence, we anticipate the benchmark index to trend within the range of 1,500-1,520 points today,' Thong told Bernama. Among heavyweights, Maybank gained 2.0 sen to RM9.64, while Tenaga and CelcomDigi remained flat at RM14.22 and RM3.81, respectively. Public Bank fell 3.0 sen to RM4.21 and CIMB added 3.0 sen to RM6.68. Among the most active stocks, HLT Global eased half-a-sen to 5.0 sen, SNS Network Technology ticked up 2.0 sen to 55.5 sen, and Dagang Nexchange added 1.0 sen to 30 sen. Elridge Energy Holdings and Dataprep Holdings were unchanged at 59.5 sen and 11.5 sen, respectively. By sector, the Plantation Index strengthened 12.10 points to 7,250.14, while the Energy Index declined by 2.06 points to 738.55. The Financial Services Index bagged 12.98 points to 17,434.41, but the Industrial Products and Services Index slid 0.26 of-a-point to 149.80.

Malaysia secures RM4.6bil potential investments at Semicon SEA 2025
Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said discussions with Singaporean firms opened RM270 million in export potential. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Malaysia has successfully attracted potential investments amounting to RM4.6 billion through its participation in the region's premier platform for the global electronics and semiconductor industry, Semicon Southeast Asia (SEA) 2025, further proving Malaysia's appeal in the eyes of international investors. Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the event, described as the 'World Cup' of the microelectronics and semiconductor industry, saw the Malaysian delegation holding strategic meetings with investors in the electrical and electronics (E&E) engineering sector, including major data centre players. In addition to its investment potential, Tengku Zafrul noted that the Malaysia Pavilion also garnered international attention when nine local companies showcased various high-tech products, including testing equipment, system solutions, and innovations in electronic waste management that align with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. 'These companies recorded annual revenue exceeding RM843 million, the majority of which came from exports to international markets. 'During the event, we also attracted buyers from Singapore, Japan, China, and the US, resulting in an export potential of nearly RM237 million,' he said in a video posted on Instagram Reels. In another development, Tengku Zafrul stated that Malaysia has also held discussions with major companies from Singapore in the food and beverage sector, as well as fast-moving consumer goods, to explore opportunities for exporting Malaysian-made halal products to the country. He said the discussions opened the door to additional export potential worth RM270 million. 'This is a golden opportunity for Malaysian producers to penetrate the Singaporean market, with a total potential investment of RM4.6 billion and export potential of RM507 million,' he said.
