Eritrea: Central Region Assembly Holds 23rd Regular Meeting
The Central Region Assembly held its 23rd regular meeting today under the theme 'Self-Reliance Stance: The Secret of Our Victory.'
Mr. Abraham Semere, Chairman of the Regional Assembly, highlighted the significance of the recent commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Asmara and its environs massacre by the Ethiopian regimes. Conducted under the theme 'We Do Not Forget,' the event played a vital role in passing on the historical incident to future generations. He also expressed appreciation for those who participated and contributed to the successful execution of the program.
During the meeting, various departments of the region presented reports on the implementation of programs outlined during the Assembly's 22nd regular meeting.
Mr. Zerit Tewoldebrhan, Managing Director of the region, provided a detailed briefing on the programs planned for 2025. He stated that key initiatives for the year include water and soil conservation, the expansion of water pipelines, and the construction of five dams.
The participants engaged in extensive discussions on the reports presented and put forth various recommendations.
Mr. Fesehaye Haile, Governor of the region, commended the public and members of the Defense Forces for their active participation in development programs. He also urged for continued and strengthened engagement in the implementation of the 2025 development initiatives.

UAE wins presidency of General Assembly of UN-Habitat

UAE's vision for sustainable urban environments On this occasion, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, expressed his pride and honour in this international achievement, which adds to the UAE's distinguished record of successes. Strategic priority for housing and urban development He emphasised that the UAE's election as President of the UN-Habitat General Assembly is a recognition of its significant efforts, guided by the vision of its wise leadership, in establishing the nation as a comprehensive model for adequate housing and sustainable urban environments. Achievements of the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme Al Mazrouei said, 'This remarkable achievement reflects the vision and directives of the UAE's wise leadership, which has made housing and urban development a strategic priority, recognising it as a fundamental pillar for social stability and quality of life..." Supporting UN Sustainable Development Goals He affirmed that the UAE will leverage this leadership role to support the implementation of Goal 11 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on 'making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.' Promoting innovation and international dialogue He also pointed out that the joint presidency with Malaysia and membership in the UN-Habitat Executive Board will open new avenues for strengthening dialogue among member states and for exchanging the best international experiences and practices. Strengthening global partnerships and action plans The Minister continued, 'We will continue working with member states, civil society organisations, and the private sector to develop clear visions and innovative action plans that meet the needs of global communities..." Recognition of national efforts and collaboration For his part, Eng Mohamed Al Mansouri, Director-General of Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme, said, 'This achievement is a true reflection of the UAE's dedicated efforts in developing a sustainable and smart urban housing system..." Egypt aims to boost local wheat procurement to cut imports, says minister
Egypt could significantly reduce its wheat imports this year as domestic procurement is expected to reach up to 5 million metric tons, compared to 3.5 million tonnes last year, Supply Minister Sherif Farouk told reporters on Monday. "Increasing wheat procurement is a welcome development. We could exceed 4 million tons, even reach 5," Farouk said. The figure is consistent with previously announced target of buying between 4 and 5 million tons from local farmers this season, compared to 3.4 million in 2024. While calling the rise in procurement promising, Farouk said it was "still not satisfying for us", and predicted further improvements in the coming years. Egypt, one of the world's largest wheat importers, consumes 9.5 million tons annually through the supply ministry to support subsidised bread. Wheat forms the backbone of the subsidised bread programme, a lifeline for over 69 million citizens. Official data seen by Reuters shows Egypt bought around 3.5 million tons of wheat as of Monday since the beginning of the local harvest in mid April, which is set to continue through mid August, against 3 million tons in the same period last year. Greater self-sufficiency, he added, also allows Egypt to time international purchases strategically. "We're not forced to buy during peak periods in exporting countries. We can choose the right time and price." Farouk also noted ongoing negotiations with Bulgaria, Egypt's fourth-largest wheat supplier, to expand cooperation, whether through direct deals with the military-linked state agriculture commodities importer, Mostakbal Misr, or through a barter system, although negotiations are still ongoing. On wheat reserve levels, he dismissed concerns, saying: "Any increase or decrease in reserves is part of our strategy to secure the best prices it's about storage capacity and economic logic." He also said that Egypt's strategic reserves of wheat are sufficient for 6 months, while reserves of vegetable oils are sufficient for 4 months, and sugar for 12 months. African Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI) Headquarters Agreement Inked in Rabat
An agreement was signed on Wednesday in Rabat, under which the Kingdom's capital will host the headquarters of the African Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI). The agreement, inked by Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates Mr. Nasser Bourita and Secretary General of AFROSAI, First President of the Court of Audit Mrs. Zineb El Adaoui, specifies the Organization's operational framework in the Kingdom, its commitments and the privileges granted to its headquarters. The signing of this agreement follows the election of Morocco's Court of Accounts as Secretary General and host institution of AFROSAI's permanent headquarters, at the Organization's General Assembly held in Tripoli, Libya, on December 4-6, 2024. By hosting the headquarters of AFROSAI, Morocco, the crossroads of several regional and sub-regional representations working for promoting the African continent and the well-being of its peoples, is demonstrating firm commitment to foster all aspects of the rule of law. This is particularly with regard to supreme audit of public finances, to portraying its efforts in the framework of cooperative ties with African countries in terms of exchanging experience and expertise, and to sharing best practices in this field. In addition, this agreement constitutes a strategic lever to strengthen the Court of Audit's cooperation with its counterparts on an African scale, in line with the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and to reiterate the Kingdom's steadfast commitment to promoting South-South cooperation in all fields, making it an absolute priority. This cooperation will contribute to improving the performance of audit institutions, bolstering institutional and professional capacities, and enshrining ongoing cooperation between African supreme audit institutions. It will further support the establishment of solid institutions, promoting transparency and good governance, in order to respond optimally to the needs of populations and achieve sustainable social and economic growth across the continent.
