Joe McCarthy says "everyone loves to hate Leinster" and admitted the team are using the perceived ill will as fuel in their quest for silverware after they hammered Glasgow to reach the United Rugby Championship final. Leinster beat last year's champions 37-19 at Aviva Stadium on Saturday to set up a decider against South African side Bulls at Croke Park next week. The Irish province have had a point to prove after being stunned at home by Northampton Saints in the Investec Champions Cup semi-finals as they aim to avoid a fourth consecutive season without a trophy."We know everyone loves to hate Leinster. That definitely drives us on," lock McCarthy told RTE after the Glasgow game."We've a great fanbase. We don't really care about the outside noise, what you guys [the media] or other people say. "We're going to rip into next week. It'll be a tough team we're playing so there's no shortage of motivation."McCarthy, 24, and several of his Leinster team-mates will hope to finish the season with a trophy against the Bulls on Saturday (17:00 BST) before linking up with the British and Irish Lions squad."We definitely needed that, it's our first URC final [in the competition's current iteration],"added McCarthy, who started all 11 of Ireland's Test matches in 2024."It's massive for us. We need the fans behind us now, we're into Croke Park."It's exactly where we want to be, it's a great buzz. There's always pressure, we've never reached a URC final."We've disappointment this year already so we want to finish strong and get the fans back on our side."

Lions set to be without 16 players as England star called into squad

Lions set to be without 16 players as England star called into squad The British & Irish Lions will be without 16 players for their first training camp Andy Farrell, the British & Irish Lions head coach (Image:) The British & Irish Lions will be without 16 players from Andy Farrell's 38-man squad for this week's training camp in Portugal. Farrell has called up experienced England hooker Jamie George as cover for Ireland pair Dan Sheehan and Ronan Kelleher who will both be involved in next Saturday's United Rugby Championship final between Leinster and the Bulls in Dublin. ‌ The Lions boss selected his original squad with full knowledge he would be without a significant chunk of players for the Portugal training camp and the warm-up clash with Argentina at the Aviva Stadium on June 20. ‌ Both the Gallagher Premiership and URC finals take place next weekend, while the French Top 14 takes place on June 28. Leinster are providing a remarkable 12 players to the tour, while Scotland playmaker Finn Russell and England tighthead Will Stuart play for Bath and second-row Ollie Chessum is at Leicester Tigers. As far as the Top 14 goes it only affects Scotland full-back Blair Kinghorn who plays for Toulouse which isn't ideal considering Hugo Keenan will also be unavailable for the trip to Portugal. Five-goal Wexford knock Antrim out of Tailteann Cup

Antrim's season ended in dismal fashion as they crashed out of the Tailteann Cup with a 5-23 to 2-21 defeat by Wexford in the preliminary quarter-finals. Having narrowly earned a spot in the prelims as the third best of the third-placed teams in the round-robin stage, Andy McEntee's side hoped to stage another stirring run through the knockout rounds after back-to-back semi-final appearances in 2023 and they were well beaten in Wexford Park as they were put to the sword by the Model County's full-forward line of Sean Nolan (2-3), Ben Brosnan (1-2) and Jack Higgins (0-3).Goals from Nolan and Brosnan, and a couple of Darragh Brooks two-pointers, helped Wexford establish a commanding 2-14 to 0-7 lead at the break. And John Hegarty's side pulled clear after the restart and led by 19 points when Nolan struck his second goal to put the Leinster county 3-20 to 0-10 up To Antrim's credit, they refused to give up. After Mark Rossiter raised the home side's fourth green flag, quickfire goals by Patrick Finnegan and Dominic McEnhill and three two-pointers helped them reduce the deficit to eight points. However, substitute Robbie Brooks added a fifth goal for Wexford to bring the curtain down on a disappointing year for Antrim, who were also relegated from Division who qualified for the quarter-finals by topping their group, are the sole Ulster representation left in this year's Tailteann Cup.
