Lucknow Lawyer Gets Life Sentence For Filing Fake Cases By Misusing Dalit Woman's Identity
A special court here has sentenced an advocate to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5.10 lakh after finding him guilty of misusing the identity of a Dalit woman to file dozens of fake cases against his opponents .
Special Judge (SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act) Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi delivered the verdict on Tuesday, holding Parmanand Gupta guilty of conspiracy and abuse of law by filing false cases through one Pooja Rawat, a Dalit woman, to target his rivals.
Special Public Prosecutor Arvind Mishra said Gupta, in collusion with Rawat, had filed at least 18 cases in his own name and another 11 through Rawat. Many of these were lodged against his rival Arvind Yadav and his family in connection with a property dispute. The false cases included allegations of rape and molestation, he added.
The matter came to light when arguments were raised before the Allahabad High Court, following which reports were sought from police stations concerned. On March 5, 2025, the high court ordered a CBI probe into the matter.
Investigations showed that Gupta conspired to use Rawat's Dalit identity to falsely implicate Yadav and his family. However, during the inquiry it emerged that Rawat was never present at the disputed site at the time of the alleged incidents, and that the house she claimed to have rented was actually under construction by the Yadav family.
Rawat later herself submitted an application to the court on August 4, 2025, stating that she had been trapped by Gupta and his wife Sangeeta, who runs a beauty parlour where she worked as an assistant.
Rawat admitted she had been coerced into giving false statements of sexual assault before a magistrate and pleaded for pardon. The court granted her conditional pardon.
The judge, however, held that Gupta, being fully aware that the charges carried the possibility of life imprisonment, had orchestrated the conspiracy and thus deserved exemplary punishment.
Sentencing him to life imprisonment, the court also directed that a copy of its judgment be sent to the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh to ensure that "a criminal like advocate Parmanand Gupta does not enter the court premises and practice law, so that the sanctity of the judiciary is preserved."

On SC order, CBI arrests DSP, 5 other J&K cops for ‘custodial torture' of colleague
A month after it registered a FIR on Supreme Court's directions in an alleged custodial torture case, the CBI arrested six policemen, including a DSP, on Wednesday. Police sources said the Central agency arrested DSP Ajaz Ahmad Sheikh, Sub-Inspector Riyaz Ahmad, and four policemen — Imtiyaz Ahmad, Hajagnir Ahmad, Shakir Ahmad and Mohammad Younis. The arrested cops were posted at the Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) in Kupwara, where Constable Khurshid Ahmad Chouhan, was allegedly tortured in February 2023. Officials said a SIT headed by DSP Subash Chander called the accused policemen for questioning and arrested them. 'The arrested cops have been kept in a Srinagar jail for now,' an official said. The cops have been booked for attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, wrongful confinement and voluntarily causing hurt. On July 21, the SC had handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI and ordered it to ensure that police personnel responsible for the custodial torture of Chouhan are arrested 'forthwith and not later than a period of one month'. Furthermore, the apex court had set a deadline of 90 days for the CBI to complete the investigation from the date of FIR registration. Terming the alleged custodial torture 'deeply shocking' to its 'conscience', the SC had ordered a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to Chouhan. It also asked the CBI to 'conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the systemic issues at the Joint Interrogation Centre, Kupwara', including examination of all CCTV systems, interrogation of all personnel present during the relevant period, forensic examination of the premises, and review of all protocols and procedures followed for detention and interrogation of suspects'. The alleged incident occurred in February 2023, when Chouhan was summoned to report at the Kupwara SSP office in connection with a narcotics issue. When he reached there, he was detained and allegedly tortured. Chouhan was admitted to the Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar with severe injuries. Chouhan's wife approached the J&K High Court seeking registration of a case against the policemen involved in the alleged torture of her husband. However, her plea was dismissed, prompting her to move the SC.

Attack on Chief Minister: Gupta video on stray dogs made Sakriya attack her, say police
A video clip, in which Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is seen speaking about stray dogs, allegedly led Rajkot resident Rajesh Khimji Sakriya to attack her during a 'Jan Sunwai' programme at her camp office in Delhi's Civil Lines on Wednesday morning, police said. After questioning him and scrutinising his cellphone details, police said a probe has also revealed that he offered prayers at Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain before coming to Delhi on Tuesday. 'During questioning, Sakriya claimed that he is a Shiv devotee and a dog lover. During Covid-19 pandemic, he bought a Shivling from Ujjain and installed it in his house in Rajkot. He claimed that on August 15, while pouring water on the Shivling, he felt like visiting temples in Ujjain. The next day, he left for Ujjain and offered prayers at Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple on Sunday. He also visited the Kal Bhairav Mandir in Ujjain,' a senior officer said. Sakriya, an autorickshaw driver and a Class 7 dropout, has been booked in several cases in Rajkot, said police, adding that he was also allegedly involved in gambling and bootlegging. 'Sakriya claimed that he saw a video clip on social media where Gupta was talking about street dogs and decided to attack her. After boarding a train on Monday, he came to Delhi on Tuesday. He boarded an e-rickshaw and reached near the Hanuman temple in Karol Bagh. He had come to know from social media that some dog lovers would gather there,' the officer said. From there, he allegedly reached the Hanuman temple and saw a poster with Gupta's face on it. 'He asked passersby where she resided and then reached the CM's residence at Shalimar Bagh where he clicked photographs from outside,' the officer said. He even allegedly approached the security personnel deployed outside the residence and expressed his desire to meet Gupta. It was then that came to know that the CM would host a Jan Sunwai at her camp office. 'They also gave him an acknowledgment slip when he registered for the Jan Sunwai,' the officer said. From Shalimar Bagh, Sakriya allegedly reached Kashmere Gate where he got a quick haircut and shave. 'When he asked the hairdresser if there was a night shelter where he could stay, he was informed about Shree Delhi Gujarati Samaj in Civil lines,' the officer said. Sakriya allegedly reached the Shree Delhi Gujarati Samaj, which offers boarding facilities, and booked a room. 'He then called his wife and asked her to wake him up at 6 am since he did not know how to set an alarm on the smartphone. His wife woke him up on Wednesday morning and then he reached the Jan Sunwai on foot,' the officer said. According to the statements of eyewitnesses and security personnel, Sakriya was the fifth person to meet the CM at the camp office. 'The CM, instead of sitting behind the table, sat ahead of it, in close proximity to the visitors. It was then that the accused attacked her. The security personnel intervened but Sakriya grabbed her by the hair and both fell on the ground. The personnel then used force to pull him away,' the officer said, adding that he was beaten up by the people present there.

From Bhojpur to Mumbai, Bihar most-wanted's run ends in arrest
The Bihar Police have arrested one of the state's 'most-wanted' gangsters with several criminal charges and a bounty of Rs 2 lakh from Maharashtra's Palghar district. Harendra 'Butan' Chowdhury alias Buttan was tracked down by the Bihar Special Task Force (STF) and arrested on August 18 in a joint operation with Maharashtra Police, police said. Buttan faces 14 criminal cases that include charges of murder, robbery, dacoity, extortion and violations under the Arms Act across Bhojpur, Patna and Vaishali districts, Bihar Additional Director General of Police (STF) Kundan Krishnan said. 'He was brought back to Bihar on transit remand and presented before Ara Court Wednesday.' A native of Belaur village under Udwant Nagar Police Station in Bhojpur district, Police said Buttan is suspected to be the key conspirator in the April 2023 killing of Deepak Sao, a former Block Development Committee member and sweet shop owner. The murder was allegedly linked to local elections. 'On April 7, Bihar STF and Bhojpur Police recovered an AK-47, four magazines, 43 cartridges and two hand grenades from Buttan's residence in a coordinated raid. While he fled, his brother, Upendra Chowdhury, was arrested in the case,' ADG Krishnan said. In 2016, Buttan and his five associates were arrested for the possession of an AK-47 and other illegal firearms. Multiple warrants had been issued against him for arms smuggling, extortion and organised violence. According to the police, Buttan was hiding in Mumbai's suburbs after fleeing from Bihar. Following his arrest on August 19, Bihar STF and Bhojpur Police raided Belaur yet again and arrested his close aide Suresh Singh alias Suresh Rai, and another accomplice Sumit Chowdhury. 'A country-made pistol was recovered from Singh,' one officer said.
