Shooting in a crowded New York club leaves 3 dead despite record low gun violence

A club shooting in the New York City borough of Brooklyn early Sunday morning has left three people dead and nine others wounded in a year of record-low gun violence in the city. Investigators believe up to four shooters opened fire with multiple weapons at Taste of the City Lounge in Crown Heights after a dispute just before 3.30am. The violence appeared to be gang-related, New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters. 'It's a terrible shooting that occurred in the city of New York,' Tisch said at a news briefing. She called the killings 'a tragic, senseless act of violence'. The crime is the second mass shooting within weeks in New York City during a year that has otherwise seen declining gun violence On July 29, a man stalked through a Manhattan office tower with a rifle , wounding one person and killing four others. A New York City police officer was among those who died.

Gone in 90 seconds: robbers steal US$2 million in jewellery from Seattle store

Smash-and-grab thieves in Seattle made off with an estimated US$2 million in diamonds, luxury watches, gold and other items in a daring midday jewellery store robbery that took just about 90 seconds, police in the US city said on Friday. Video from the West Seattle store's surveillance cameras shows four masked suspects shattering the locked glass front door with hammers and then ransacking six display cases on Thursday. One display held around US$750,000 worth of Rolex watches, police said in a statement, and another had an emerald necklace valued at US$125,000. A masked suspect threatened workers with bear spray and a taser, police said, but no one was injured. 'We're pretty shook up as a staff,' Josh Menashe, vice-president of the family-owned store, said by phone on Friday. 'We're gonna be closed for a while.' Menashe said workers finished cleaning up the broken glass and were working on a full inventory of the losses.
