Jannik Sinner reveals he almost QUIT tennis during doping ban ordeal - as world No 1 nears return to playing amid model romance rumours

Daily Mail30-04-2025

World No 1 Jannik Sinner has revealed he considered quitting tennis in the fallout of his doping saga.
The 23-year-old, who claimed victory at the Australian Open earlier this year, has been serving a suspension running from February 9 until May 4 after reaching a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) over his two positive doping tests last year.
WADA appealed an initial decision by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) who cleared the Italian of any wrongdoing after he tested positive on two occasions.
The World No 1 will be eligible to play in the year's next Grand Slam event, the French Open, which starts on 19 May. However, the next tournament he can play in is the Italian Open - his home event - which begins on May 7.
Tennis's anti-doping body, the Tennis Integrity Agency, had accepted Sinner's explanation that the banned substance clostebol entered his system via a cream applied to a cut on his physio's hand. They judged he bore 'no fault or negligence' and issued no suspension. WADA appealed, seeking a ban because they believe the judgement should have been: 'no significant fault or negligence'.
Now, though, the star has opened up on the ordeal from him point of view, revealing that he almost called it quits on his career.
'When I arrived in Australia in January I was uncomfortable, also because it seemed to me that the other players looked at me differently, he said. 'For a moment, I even thought about giving up everything.'
'In the end I built my own bubble, where no one else entered, and this certainly gave me the desire to continue, the desire to prepare well for the slams. I am very happy that this phase is over and I am ready to start again, even if a period of stop, maybe not so long, was necessary for me.'
In August last year, Sinner denied allegations that he was given special treatment – and insists his conscience is clean - after he avoided a ban.
'Of course I was worried, because it was the first time for me, you know, and hopefully the last time that I am in this situation,' Sinner continued. 'I believe I'm a fair player on and off the court… in my mind I know that I haven't done anything wrong.'
The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced that, although Sinner was docked 400 ranking points and $250,000 dollars, he was found to bear 'no fault or negligence'.
The 23-year-old first tested positive during the event in Indian Wells on March 10, then again eight days later.
Sinner was provisionally suspended, but on both occasions he successfully appealed and was allowed to continue playing while the tribunal assessed the evidence. But after a lengthy, behind-close-doors investigation, the player's reason for the extremely small quantity of clostebol in his system – less than a billionth of a gram – was accepted.
He has reportedly begun a romance with Russian model Lara Leito. Italian outlet Chi Magazine pictured Sinner, 23, with 31-year-old model Leito at the Monte Carlo Country Club.
Leito reportedly greeted Sinner's coaching team and was seen filming the star as she watched him train from the stands. She was then reportedly seen hugging Sinner at the end of the session and was later leaving his Audi RS6 ABT Legacy Edition car with the pair exchanging a kiss.

EXCLUSIVE Tennis icon is completely unrecognizable as he's spotted for first time in months... as insider reveals why he gave up on fame

A tennis legend appeared unrecognizable while stepping out in Beverly Hills this week as an inside source revealed he enjoys the 'anonymity he is blessed with.' The 53-year-old former professional used to take center stage on court, amassing a staggering 14 Grand Slam titles throughout a decorated 15-year career. Yet, in the two decades since putting his racket down, fans have only caught fleeting glimpses of Pete Sampras - including this week. In exclusive Daily Mail photos, the American was captured making a rare public appearance on Tuesday when he was seen on a coffee run in the iconic Los Angeles neighborhood, proving tough to recognize. Plainly dressed in loose-fitting grey workout clothes and green Nike sneakers, Sampras was pictured clutching a Starbucks drinks carrier containing two iced coffees and a hot beverage as he kept his head down. The public sighting, which came amid the French Open - one of tennis's four Grand Slam and the only one to elude Sampras - is just the second in seven months after he was spotted carrying out a similar errand in Beverly Hills back in December. The tennis legend cut a casual figure as he carried out a coffee run in the LA neighborhood But the balding former athlete already looked strikingly different, as he debuted a new salt-and-pepper beard and fuller sideburns. The rare sightings aren't unusual for Sampras as an inside source revealed to the Daily Mail that the 'homebody' has actively shielded himself from the lifestyle of the rich and the famous since officially retiring from tennis in 2003. 'Pete has always shied away from taking on all the benefits of being a celebrity as he has always considered himself a tennis player and a regular dude,' the insider said. 'He loves being a homebody and only selectively is he seen when he goes out, and he loves it. He loves being able to visit his sisters and brother who he is very close with and just more about being a husband and a father and just taking things day by day. 'Through tennis, Pete learned that you have to be your own person to succeed, and that is how he treats life, being his own person and allowing only a few people to surround him in his everyday life. It is what has worked for him for decades and he isn't looking to change anytime soon. He enjoys the more than expected anonymity he is blessed with.' Aside from his photographed routine coffee runs, Sampras has only stepped back into the public eye on limited occasions. He made an appearance at Indian Wells in 2019, and at a Nike event four years prior, with the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova all present. Sampras is notoriously private and undertakes very little TV work - usually opting to stay out of the spotlight and keep his personal life to himself. The five-time US Open Champions has endured a past couple of years as he revealed in October 2023 that his wife was battling ovarian cancer. In a statement to the ATP Tour, the American legend said: 'As most have come to know, I am a pretty quiet and private person. However, this past year has been an exceptionally challenging time for my family, and I have decided to share what's been going on. 'Last December, my wife, Bridgette, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Since then, she has had major surgery, pushed through chemotherapy and continues with targeted maintenance therapy. 'It is hard to watch someone you love go through a challenge like this. However, seeing our boys step up and be such strong supporters of Bridgette, myself and each other has been amazing.' He and Bridgette have two children from their 25-year marriage - Ryan and Christian - and the family still reside in California. Bridgette, a former Miss Teen USA, is an actress and singer who starred in the likes of the 1997 slasher 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' and also had a role in 'The Wedding Planner' alongside Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey. Even at the height of his playing powers, Sampras was known to be notoriously private and fame-averse. After winning the 2002 US Open (the last tournament of his career), he flew home to California and declined all media requests. He has been said to have loathed press conferences and promotional appearances and even in retirement would rarely leave his Beverly Hills mansion. In contrast, Sampras's greatest rival Andre Agassi became tabloid fodder due to his relationship with actress Brooke Shields and high-profile alleged affair with Barbra Streisand. Meanwhile, a trio of players whose careers Sampras overlapped with - John McEnroe, his brother Patrick McEnroe and Jim Courier - have all gone on to be respected analysts on TV. During his career, Sampras was the best player in the world and has two Australian Open titles, five US Opens, and an incredible seven Wimbledon wins. He has 64 career singles titles in total - the ninth best in the Open Era - and earned himself over $43million in prize money throughout his career. He retired officially in the summer of 2003, going on to periodically appear in exhibition matches in the years that followed. After the birth of their second son in 2005, both Sampras and his wife Bridgette both stepped away from the limelight to focus on family life.

Alcaraz's ridiculous victory over Sinner sets tone for next decade of rivalry at top of tennis

Five hours into the madness, when their legs should have been fading and sanity departing, the miraculous French Open final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner ascended to even greater heights. So much had already happened. For a long time, Alcaraz had been dominated with the same ruthless efficiency Sinner reserved for the rest of the field and he soon stared into the abyss, trailing triple championship point at 3-5, 0-40 in the fourth set. That moment would instead mark the beginning of Alcaraz's unprecedented, preposterous comeback as he completely turned the match around. He soon closed in on victory, leading by a break in the fifth set against a weary opponent. With his back to the wall, time running out, Sinner produced a transcendent return game as Alcaraz served for the title at 5-4 to draw level again. In their delirium, desperation meeting sheer ambition, the moment elicited the best of both players. Having invested so much time and effort into their pursuit of this title, they simply had no choice but to abjure all thoughts from their minds and swing as freely as possible. The frenzied final games of the 2025 French Open final will go down as one of the greatest stretches of play in the history of grand slam championship matches. In the end, the suffocating pressure imposed by Sinner inspired Alcaraz to elevate his own level to wondrous heights. Despite how rapidly he has built an all-time great career, Alcaraz has had his own struggles on the court. His game is so complete and he has so many more options at his disposal than any adversary, but this can also play tricks on his mind. At its worst, he plays disordered and chaotic tennis. He goes for overzealous, low percentage shots and his impulsiveness takes over. Occasionally, he hits himself off the court. Just as he can bulldoze any opponent on any day, he is also capable of taking a straight sets loss to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round of the US Open, as he did last year. In tennis, however, success means rising up in the most important moments. Beyond Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, nobody thrives under those circumstances like Alcaraz. His ability to find order after his game was in total disarray seconds earlier is remarkable. Alcaraz knows his quality and he believes his potential is boundless. He tackles those tough moments with the full belief that he can always find a path to victory regardless of the obstacle before him. Down triple championship point Alcaraz was still reassuring his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero: 'He was love-40 in the fourth, 5-3, and he looks at me and still make me like this [shaking] the racket, saying: 'I'm still here,' said Ferrero. Sign up to The Recap The best of our sports journalism from the past seven days and a heads-up on the weekend's action after newsletter promotion Even though still at the start of his career, Alcaraz is starting to have a record for winning tight matches than few other players in the game's history can rival. He trailed Alexander Zverev by two sets to one before turning the match around in last year's final. He improbably found a path to victory in his breathless 2023 Wimbledon win against Djokovic. This comeback victory over Sinner had been preceded by another win from match point down in their 2022 US Open quarter-final before Alcaraz won the title. He is now the second player in history, after Djokovic, to win multiple major titles from match point down and he is a perfect 5-0 in major finals. He is only 22. By defending his French Open title, Alcaraz is the third youngest men's player to win five grand slam titles. It has been obvious for years that Alcaraz has set himself on a path to becoming one of the greats but only time will determine if he has the longevity to come at all close to the generation that preceded him. As Alcaraz and Sinner pushed each other to the limits of their powers, the spectacle on Sunday night underlined the important role they will each play in their rival's career. This was the first grand slam final between Alcaraz, a five-time champion, and Sinner, a three-time champion, who have now equally split the last six major titles between them. There has been so much hype around this rivalry for years and both players felt the significance of the match-up. Still, after decades of dominance by Nadal, Djokovic and Roger Federer, and the many classics they played between them, the standard they set for greatness is so tough to reach. It was reasonable to accept that the new generation might not be able to immediately live up to those high standards. Instead, in a tournament that began with Nadal's elaborate farewell ceremony and saw an emotional Djokovic admit he is unsure about whether he will return to Paris next year, Alcaraz and Sinner used the occasion to play one of the greatest grand slam finals of all time, affirming their status as leaders in this new era of men's tennis to the world and setting the tone for what could be a decade at the top of the sport. These matches will make them better, the minuscule margins between them inspiring them to constantly improve and work on their games. Even as they tussle across borders and surfaces, their combined greatness will also help them to stay more than a step ahead of the rest.
