Lakshya Sen, frustrated by minor injuries, aims for victories before the World Championships. He recently defeated China's Wang Zheng Xing and is focused on staying competitive.
Lakshya Sen has been dealing with persistent minor injuries over the past few months, leading to some frustration. His main focus now is to secure some victories as he prepares for the World Championships.
After a challenging season with several first-round exits, Sen delivered an encouraging performance on Wednesday, defeating China's Wang Zheng Xing 21-11, 21-18 to start positively.
'It feels really good to win a match. I've been struggling on the court and off the court as well with injuries. I would not say injuries, but some niggles here and there which are keeping me away from badminton," he said.
'It's a little bit frustrating. The past few months have been a little bit frustrating. But yeah, again, I'm focused. I'm trying to do the right thing. And yeah, really happy with the win today."
Recently, Sen was troubled by a back issue that forced him to retire mid-match against Lin Chun-Yi at the Singapore Open.
When asked if the recurring niggles affected his mindset, Sen replied, 'Yes, I think it was there. Especially before the match, even closing in the second set where it was close. I mean, it was back in my mind. But yeah, I was just trying to fight my thoughts and also the opponent.
'So yeah, happy with the way I played today. Looking forward to the next match, one match at a time."
What's Next For Lakshya Sen?
Regarding his goals for the upcoming weeks, Sen said, 'Yes, the World Championships are just around the corner and I've been preparing well for it.
'For me now, the most important thing is I've trained well in the last few months. I've done everything in training. So now it's just about winning more matches and be more competitive, be sharp until the World Championships.
'I have a few good tournaments to just keep going and then good 2-3 weeks of preparation before the World Championships."
Speaking about his preparation for the Japan Open, Sen revealed he had been dealing with shoulder and ankle issues in recent months.
'I think I've been training well. But yeah, there were some injuries – with the shoulder and also the ankle. So I was doing everything possible to protect the injured parts.
'Just hoping that I get back to winning ways and try and get more matches under my belt now."

Ben Stokes Creates History, Becomes First England Captain To...

For scoring a century (141) and taking a five-wicket haul (5/72) in the first innings of the Manchester Test, Stokes bagged the POTM award. Ben Stokes was on fire with both bat and ball for England in the fourth Test against India, which ended in a draw at Old Trafford in Manchester on Sunday, July 27. The 34-year-old cricketer picked up five wickets for 72 runs in the first innings and then scored 141 runs from 198 balls as well. In the second innings, he bowled 11 overs and dismissed KL Rahul (90). For his superb all-round show at Old Trafford, Stokes bagged the Player of the Match award. The POTM award in Manchester is Stokes' 12th POTM award in Test cricket. Only Joe Root (13 POTM awards in 157 Tests) has won more POTM awards for England in Tests than Stokes now. Most POTM awards in Tests for England 13 – Joe Root 12 – Ian Botham 12 – Ben Stokes 10 – Kevin Pietersen 10 – Stuart Broad Stokes has scored a total of 304 runs and picked up 17 wickets in the ongoing series. He is the first England captain in Test cricket's history to aggregate 300-plus runs and bag 15-plus wickets in a Test series. The only England player to achieve this double in a Test series in the last 40 years was Andrew Flintoff in Ashes 2005. Test ends in a draw India pulled off a remarkable draw at Old Trafford on the final day of the fourth Test, thanks to heroic centuries from Ravindra Jadeja (107*) and Washington Sundar (101*). After conceding a 311-run first-innings lead and losing both openers for ducks, India were staring at defeat. However, captain Shubman Gill (103) and KL Rahul (90) stitched a crucial 188-run stand before Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer struck back in the morning session. With the match slipping away, Jadeja and Washington showed immense grit, batting through more than two sessions and adding an unbeaten 200-run partnership to save the game. Their calm under pressure frustrated England, with even captain Stokes showing visible displeasure as India continued to play to reach individual milestones. This was just England's second draw in 40 Tests under the Bazball era. The series, now hanging in the balance, moves to a thrilling finale at The Oval on July 31. view comments First Published: July 28, 2025, 07:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. This team will make its own history: Gautam Gambhir

Agency: PTI Manchester, Jul 27 (PTI) Gautam Gambhir wants his players to make their own history rather than following anyone from the past including the India head coach himself. And, after a memorable comeback in the Manchester Test, they are moving in that direction. A 188-run stand between captain Shubman Gill and K L Rahul kept India in the fourth Test against England before Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja earned a spirited draw for the visitors with an unbeaten 203-run alliance. Asked whether Gambhir gave a pep talk to the players after day four and made a reference to his match-saving 137 in Napier back in 2009, Gambhir responded in the negative. 'Look, the first thing is that I don't remember any of my knocks, that has become history. I think they should make their own history. Honestly, no one in this team will follow anyone or want to follow. They should make their own history. 'They want to fight for the common man back home. And the important thing is that the way a lot of people had written us off in this Test match, this is the foundation of this team. 'These are characters who are sitting in this dressing room, wanting to fight for the country and they will continue to do that," said the head coach. Managing a draw from the brink of defeat would give India a psychological edge over the hosts in the fifth and final Test in London, felt Gambhir. 'It will. Because when you see, when you're put under the pressure, when you're put under the pump and you end up adding five sessions, I think that's a great character. And anything that you do in these conditions, when you're put under pressure and you come out of those pressure moments, it is always a great feeling. 'And it just ends up giving a lot of confidence in the dressing room as well. And I'm sure, I think going into Oval, I think we will be high on confidence, but we can't take anything for granted," he said. Under new captain Gill, the team is going through a transition but Gambhir doesn't see it that way. Considering the inexperience in the side, the squad has done well especially Gill who racked up his fourth hundred of the series on Sunday. 'Good you used that word transition but I don't see it like that because it is still an Indian team. This is the best 18 that is going to represent. It is only experience and inexperience. 'And that is how we see this. But the most important thing is that these guys got to learn a lot from what they did today. 'Because being under pressure, batting five sessions is never easy on day five of the Test against an attack like England. And then coming out with a draw and only losing four wickets…," he said. Generations will talk about what Pant did for this team: Gautam Gambhir

Manchester, Jul 27 (PTI) Head coach Gautam Gambhir on Sunday said the character and foundation of the current Indian team will be built on the remarkable act of courage from Rishabh Pant, who batted in the first innings of the fourth Test with a broken right foot. Pant added crucial first innings runs for the team despite batting with a fractured foot after missing a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes on day one. He managed to get a half-century, helping India post 358 on day two. Pant was not required to bat in the second innings as Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar guided India to a morale-boosting draw with a century each to keep the series alive. 'Rishabh already, it's been declared that he's out of the series. And one thing I want to say is that the character and the foundation of this team will be built on what Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well," said Gambhir in the post-match media interaction. 'Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot. Not many people have done that in the past. And he had put his hand up, and that is why I say any amount of praise… 'I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations to come forward will talk about this. And generations coming forward should talk about it, that there is someone who has batted with a broken foot. And it's unfortunate because of the kind of form he was in. 'But again, he's an important member of the Test side. And I hope he recovers quickly and comes back quickly and try and deliver a game for us," said the former India batter. All fast bowlers are fit for final Test, no call taken on Bumrah yet ========================================== Gambhir also gave an important update on the fitness of the fast bowlers who have had to deal with heavy workload and injuries over the course of the five-match series. Having mentioned earlier that Jasprit Bumrah would be playing only three Tests due to workload management, Gambhir said no call is taken yet on his participation at The Oval. For the record, the Manchester Test was Bumrah's third of the tour but with the series still on the line, he might just play in London. 'All the fast bowlers are there. There is no injury scare," Gambhir asserted. That means that Akash Deep has fully recovered from his groin injury and Arshdeep Singh from his hand injury.
