Alejandro Kirk drives in three as Blue Jays defeat Pirates
George Springer belted his 20th home run of the season, a two-run blast in the second inning off Pirates starter Mitch Keller (5-12) as Toronto scored three in the first and two in the second.
Kirk pushed Toronto's lead to 7-1 in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run off Pirates' reliever Colin Holderman.
Keller lasted 3 1/3 innings after allowing all five of those runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four on 85 pitches.
Springer and Nathan Lukes each produced two hits and two RBIs, while Myles Straw had a double and stole two bases to help the Blue Jays snap a brief two-game losing streak and halt the Pirates' equally brief two-game winning streak.
Toronto's offensive resurgence backed up a strong outing from Max Scherzer (4-2), who threw 104 pitches over six innings. Scherzer collected his 220th career win after allowing one run on four hits and three walks, while striking out four.
Bryan Reynolds, Joey Bart and Nick Gonzales each had two hits to lead Pittsburgh offensively.
The Pirates chipped away at Toronto's lead with a run in the seventh and eighth innings. Ronny Simon drove in a sacrifice fly to score Bart and cut the deficit to 7-2. Jack Suwinski singled to drive in Gonzales in the eighth to make it a four-run game.
But Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman prevented Pittsburgh from doing any more damage by working a perfect ninth with one strikeout in a non-save situation.
Toronto loaded the bases in the first when Springer was hit by a pitch and Keller walked Addison Barger and Bo Bichette. Kirk hit a long single to score Springer and Lukes followed with a two-run single.
The Pirates released left-handed pitcher Ryan Borucki on Monday.

Angels place RHP Jose Soriano on paternity list
August 20 - Los Angeles Angels right-hander Jose Soriano was placed on the paternity list prior to Wednesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. Soriano, 26, can miss up to a maximum of three games while on the list. The Angels recalled right-hander Chase Silseth from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. Soriano was slated to start a game in the three-game weekend series against the visiting Chicago Cubs prior to the announcement. White Sox RHP Elvis Peguero (elbow) on IL one day after recall to team
August 20 - The Chicago White Sox placed right-handed reliever Elvis Peguero on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday because of a strained right elbow. In a corresponding move, the White Sox recalled rookie right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez from Triple-A Charlotte. Chicago had recalled Peguero on Tuesday from when right-hander Owen White (right hip impingement) went on the 15-day IL. Peguero, 28, has pitched in two games for the White Sox, including Tuesday when he faced four batters and allowed one hit, two walks and two runs in one-third of an inning in the 11-10 loss to the host Atlanta Braves. He also made his first career MLB start in the Chicago's 2-1 home loss Aug. 11 to Detroit, yielding three hits and one run with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. The White Sox had selected him off waivers on Aug. 3 from the Milwaukee Brewers, where he was 0-0 with 4.91 ERA, four walks and five strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings over six relief appearance this season. The Dominican Republic native is a career 11-10 with a 4.26 ERA, 67 walks and 121 strikeouts in 135 games for the Los Angeles Angels (2021-22), Brewers (2023-25) and White Sox. Gonzalez, 23, is 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA, four walks and six strikeouts in eight innings over five relief appearances for Chicago. D-backs rally in ninth and trim Guardians in 10 innings
August 20 - Adrian Del Castillo singled in the winning run in the 10th inning after Lourdes Gurriel Jr. homered to tie the game in the ninth, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon in Phoenix. Alek Thomas sacrificed Pavin Smith to third in the 10th before pinch-hitter Del Castillo looped a walkoff single into short left field off Matt Festa (3-3) in the rubber game of the series. The Diamondbacks' comeback spoiled Cleveland left-hander Parker Messick's major league debut. Messick, recalled before the game from Triple-A Columbus, gave up one run in 6 2/3 innings in his major league debut and was in line for the victory until Gurriel's 424-foot homer off Cade Smith leading off the ninth. Gurriel, who has been the primary cleanup since the trade deadline, has nine RBIs in his last six games. Messick gave up seven hits, six singles, and struck out six.
