'Not good enough': Isaac Heeney savaged by AFL great over 'unforgivable' act

Yahoo11-03-2025
AFL great Luke Hodge has put Isaac Heeney on notice, pinpointing a number of questionable efforts in the Swans' loss to Hawthorn last week. Sydney kicked off their 2025 season with a 20-point loss to the Hawks, beginning the Dean Cox era on a sour note.
Dissecting the game on Channel 7 program 'The Agenda Setters' on Tuesday night, Hawthorn great Hodge wasn't impressed by what he saw from Heeney. Hodge pinpointed two goals the Hawks scored that came about from Heeney lapses, and described his actions as "unforgivable" at one stage.
"He's on watch, because his job is to make sure nothing comes through the stoppage," Hodge said. "But also, as the ball goes out, he's got to watch out for any player."
Hodge showed vision of Heeney seeing that Lloyd Meek was free in the forward line but failing to mark up on him, which allowed Meek to take a mark and convert the goal. "This is unforgivable right here," Hodge said. "He sees Meek is by himself and thinks 'he's not my man and I'm not going to worry about him'. You're a leader of the football club. He didn't man him up and Meek kicked one of his two goals. That's not good enough."
Hodge then showed a second incident in which Heeney ignored teammate Justin McInerney telling him to push onto the other side of a ball-up and mark a free Hawks player. "McInerney is telling his leader to push through because (Conor) Nash is sitting here by himself," Hodge said.
"Because he doesn't do that...no intensity...(James) Rowbottom and (Chad) Warner get sucked into the contest because Heeney didn't come across. It left two of Hawthorn's best ball-users at the back of the contest. They kicked it forward and scored a goal. Two of their three goals from outside the centre square came from a Heeney set-up."

Heeney wasn't the only high-profile player to be criticised for their play on Tuesday night, with James Hird and Rory Sloane calling out Collingwood skipper Darcy Moore. Vision was shown on 'Footy Classified' on Channel 9 of the moment GWS counterpart Toby Greene ran back bravely into a marking contest and managed to avoid being hit with any force.
Hird and Sloane both said they were gobsmacked Moore didn't take the opportunity to put a shot on Greene, which could have been done legally as he contested the ball. Eddie McGuire highlighted footage of Greene being very physical with Collingwood players and questioned why Moore didn't give him a taste of his own medicine.
McGuire pointed out that Moore was involved in the incident with Christian Petracca last year that saw the Demons star suffer horrific rib and lung injuries. He asked Hird: "That would have been in the back of his mind and he's a scrupulously-fair player, but in this situation (with Greene) what would you have been advising him to do?"
Hird responded: "I have huge respect for Darcy Moore but if it was Toby Greene in that situation, Darcy Moore would have been carried off on a stretcher. He would have gone straight through him. I'm not saying you try to hurt anybody, but I imagine if Toby Greene was in the same situation it would have been a different story."

Retired Crows champion Sloane said Greene would be "lights out" and "going to hospital" if he was in Moore's situation. "It was courageous from Greene and you expect that from your captain, but on the other side I'm going 'there's a freight train coming and he's lights out here. He's going to hospital."
McGuire added: "In the context of that game, Collingwood needed to do something. Darcy did the right thing and punched the ball away nicely...he did it nicely."
"GWS went there with intent to be 'violent', and Collingwood didn't stand up to that."Hirdy and Eddie highlight how the difference in Toby Greene and Darcy Moore's approach summed up the Giants-Pies clash.#9FootyClassified | Watch on Nine & 9Now 📺 pic.twitter.com/y8K1tUixbC

Road warrior Lions set sights on crashing AFL top-four

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan says he's a relieved man after watching his team secure a finals berth for a seventh straight year -- and now he wants them to go chase a prized top-four berth. The Lions booked their spot for September with a crushing 57-point win over Fremantle in Perth on Friday night. The 15.11 (101) to 5.14 (44) win improved Brisbane's record to 15-6-1 with just one more match to go - a tough fixture against Hawthorn at the Gabba next week. Seven years in a row of #AFLFinals appearances 👏 — AFL (@AFL) August 15, 2025 Brisbane's finals hopes would have been on thin ice had they lost to Fremantle, and Fagan was thrilled with the win on enemy territory. "It's a big relief," Fagan said. "I was sitting in my hotel room today thinking, 'if we lose tonight and we lose next week, we could miss finals having 14 wins and a draw - that's unheard of'. "But it was just a relief to have that out of the way. And it allows us to plan a little bit forward. "This is our seventh year in a row that we've qualified for finals. That's hard to do, particularly if you're an interstate club because you've got to travel more and there's a few more obstacles." Brisbane won the flag from fifth place last year. Fagan would love to see the Lions secure a double chance by finishing in the top-four this time around. "I'm sure it'll drive the group - that desire to finish top-four," he said. "I mean, there's probably 1001 different ways the ladder could end up next week, but we're in control of our own destiny." Brisbane have won 17 of their past 21 games away from home - a remarkable feat. "So we just should travel somewhere and play next week, to be honest," Fagan quipped. One major downer to come out of Friday's win was a dislocated shoulder to midfielder Jarrod Berry. Jarrod Berry left the field after this incident with Andrew Brayshaw.#AFLFreoLions — AFL (@AFL) August 15, 2025 Berry's left shoulder popped out when he was bowled over by Andrew Brayshaw in the final quarter, and it remains to be seen whether it will be a season-ending injury. "His other shoulder is the one he's had operated on ... so now the other one's popped out," Fagan said. "I don't know the full extent. Obviously, there'll be scans and stuff like that. "It didn't look good. But sometimes they can find a way to strap them up and get them through the season and have an operation at the end of the year."

Hawthorn player tipped as potential target for Eagles in AFL trade with Harley Reid

West Coast are confident they can keep Harley Reid at the club as he is tempted by huge offers in Victoria and Hawthorn have entered the race for the youngster with their ruckman reported to be part of the potential trade. Eagles Coach Andrew McQualter has revealed he is optimistic Reid will remain in Perth with the 20-year-old enjoying his time at the club. The Eagles offer is rumoured to be about $24 million over 11 years - composing of an initial two-year deal with a trigger for the remaining nine. A number of Victorian clubs appear to be interested in throwing huge money at Reid to bring him back to his home state. This week St Kilda coach Ross Lyon attempted to shut down links between his club and Reid after rumours swirled the club was tossing up a $25 million deal for the Eagles player. However, now it appears Hawthorn could be at the front of the queue for Reid. Speaking on Nine News, reporter Tom Morris feels the Hawks are primed to grab Reid if he wants a move. "He's the big fish among the contracted ones to watch. If he asked for a trade, I firmly believe Hawthorn is at the front of the cue," Morris said. And Morris claimed a player that could be used in a trade for Reid, if he wants to move, could be Hawthorn ruckman Ned Reeves. The 26-year-old has not featured much for Hawthorn in recent years and is contracted until 2026. And Morris feels he could be used in part of a trade if it comes to it. "Ned Reeves could easily head to the Eagles as part of a possible Harley Reid trade," Morris added. Despite speculation mounting around where Reid will end up, coach McQualter is pretty confident the 20-year-old midfield superstar won't be going anywhere. West Coast confident in Harley Reid deal While Hawthorn may be looking at a trade deal for Reid, coach McQualter has praised the 20-year-old's attitude and feels he will want to remain in Perth. "I'm really confident Harley will be here," McQualter said on Thursday. "Every day Harley turns up to work, he's incredibly invested in this team, this club. So yeah, I'm really optimistic that Harley will be here." McQualter claimed it wasn't just for next year, but was confident Reid would stay for the long-haul. "I'm talking for a long time," he added. "The young man is really invested. He's working hard to make us become better, to get himself better. He cares about the group, cares about the club. So there's signs that point to me that he's really invested." When asked about whether $2 million a season was reasonable to spend on one player, McQualter doubled down. "Money's different to what it used to be," he added. "When I played, I got paid $48,000. So if you're asking me would I have taken $2 million - the answer is yes, I would have. Was I worth it? No, I think that's pretty obvious. "But I think that's just where the game's trending. It's going up. It'll happen eventually - someone will be that player. There was a time when no one was a million dollar player, and that broke a record. So that'll just be what happens, and it will keep moving like that in the future."

Here are the 10 best games on the just-released Celtics 2024-25 schedule

In the Celtics' perfect world, Holiday would still be in their backcourt. But the penalties for remaining above the salary cap's second apron are real and restrictive, so president of basketball operations Brad Stevens had little choice but to trade Holiday and his $32.4 million salary to Portland. Holiday will receive a warm ovation and a tribute video during his TD Garden return. Also, don't forget about Robert Williams. The oft-injured former Celtics big man has yet to face Boston since being traded to the Blazers two years ago. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 9. Jan. 28 vs. Hawks Advertisement Prior to Game 1 of the 2024 Finals against the Mavericks, the crowd erupted when Porzingis marched through the TD Garden corridors and onto the court after missing more than a month because of a calf strain. He dominated the opening quarter and the Celtics never lost control of the series after that. The big man relished his time in Boston as much as any player in recent memory, even though he was limited by a frustrating illness during his final months. Porzingis was traded to the Hawks in another salary-clearing move, and this game will be another chance for fans to show their appreciation for a champion. Advertisement 8. Feb. 4 at Rockets The Rockets' trade for superstar forward Kevin Durant was a clear indication that they believe they can challenge the Thunder for the NBA title this season. Durant remains one of the world's elite scorers, but he also turns 37 next month, so the Rockets are looking to capitalize now. This will be former Celtics coach Ime Udoka's best chance at a championship since he guided Boston to the 2022 Finals. 7. Oct. 29 vs. Cavaliers The Celtics and Cavaliers roared through 60-win regular seasons a year ago before bowing out in the conference semifinals. Unlike Boston, though, Cleveland returns all five starters and will get a full season with star sixth man DeAndre Hunter, who was acquired from the Hawks last February. With Tatum and Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton out with injuries, this Cleveland core will never get a chance this good again. 6. Jan. 10 vs. Spurs Rising superstar Victor Wembanyama has been cleared to return after missing the second half of last season with a blood clot issue, and the Spurs have quietly surrounded him with a talented cast that includes newly re-signed point guard De'Aaron Fox and No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper. But Celtics supporters will be more focused on the return of big man Luke Kornet, who emerged as a fan favorite over the last three seasons. Kornet signed a four-year, $41 million deal with San Antonio last month. 5. March 6 vs. Mavericks It's unlikely that Celtics fans will get their annual chance to boo Kyrie Irving, who is recovering from an ACL tear, but this game should have warmer vibes. No. 1 overall draft pick Cooper Flagg, one of the most hyped NBA prospects of the past 25 years, is a native of Newport, Maine. There were big draft parties throughout his town of 3,200 in June, and there's little doubt that busloads of Mainers will make this trip to TD Garden to watch Flagg, who grew up as a diehard Celtics fan. Advertisement 4. March 12 at Thunder Many experts predicted a Celtics-Thunder Finals matchup last season. Oklahoma City did its part, capping a dominant 68-win regular season with a thrilling playoff run that included a pair of Game 7 victories. With a young, ascending roster, the Thunder will now focus on creating the dynasty that appears to have slipped through the Celtics' fingers. 3. March 18 vs. Warriors This has been arguably the NBA's best East-West rivalry over the past decade, and it should continue to have juice as long as Stephen Curry plays for Golden State. But this game gets this lofty ranking in large part because all signs continue to point to Al Horford signing with the Warriors once Jonathan Kuminga's free agency saga is resolved. 2. Feb. 22 at Lakers Look, this game would be ranked highly even if the Lakers were terrible. Celtics-Lakers will always be Celtics-Lakers. But LeBron James and Luka Doncic bring an immense level of star power, too. 1. Oct. 24 at Knicks Did the Knicks' conference semifinal win over the Celtics mark a ch anging of the guard? Or is New York's stay on top going to be temporary as Boston awaits Tatum's return? Regardless, this season the Celtics will find themselves as underdogs against New York, and this will be a chance to stomp into Madison Square Garden and spoil the Knicks' good vibes.
