Teenager reels in 6ft fish

Telegraph26-07-2025
At 18 years old and 6ft tall, Charlie Braithwaite is no small fry – but he was shocked to reel in a fish as large as himself.
Charlie and his father Carl Braithwaite, were on a fishing trip off the coast of Norway near Tromso with friends, as a double celebration to mark Charlie completing his A-levels, and his father's 50th birthday.
Charlie managed to reel in a 165lb halibut, which took an hour to get on the boat and three men to pull it back off again at the end of the trip.
Photographs show Charlie posing alongside the fish, which is almost taller than him as it hangs from a weighing hook.
Carl, from Holton-le-Clay, said: 'It's definitely the biggest fish we've ever caught. We go every year, me and my friends, but we've never caught anything like this.
'This is the second time Charlie has been and he didn't catch anything last year, but now he's hooked a monster.'
Carl, who's been sea fishing for more than 15 years, said they'd be sharing it out among their friends and family.
He said: 'We normally fish in the River Humber and I've been sea fishing for more than 15 years now – but it's my 50th birthday, so this has been a bit of a break for my birthday and to mark Charlie finishing his A-levels, before he goes to Loughborough University to do chemical engineering.
'I don't know how many people this can feed. We've caught a few more but nothing like this. We'll be bringing it all home to share out among the group and for friends and family.'
If the fish is prepared to serve up fillets weighing around six to eight ounces, the halibut could feed more than 260 people.
Carl added: 'To be honest Charlie was a bit overwhelmed. It was a bit frightening really. When the fish get on the line they pull all the line off the reel and you have to drive the boat towards them. You have to drive alongside them and hopefully it eventually slows it down.
'It was only a small boat, not like a big commercial boat, so it was just the four of us trying to lift it on. None of us could believe it, even though we've been coming for years we've never caught anything on that scale.'

Angler reels in record-breaking carp... in city centre

An angler has caught a record-breaking fish in the middle of a city. Andrew Danson, a 40-year-old joiner, was fishing on the Salford Quays in Manchester when he reeled in the 37lb common carp. Posing with his catch, which is a record size for Salford Quays, Mr Danson said: 'I had been there for the two previous nights and then that morning I had her. 'I knew straight away she was big and when I held her it felt like I had won the lottery. It's a new record and I'm still on a buzz because of it.' Mr Danson's catch has been praised by fellow anglers on social media. Robert Bugsy said: 'Had the pleasure of watching this fish swimming out from under the walkway of the quay. 'Watched it for about 10 minutes, an incredible sight to see and amazing how many people were oblivious to it. Great angling to that man, incredible catch.' 'A needle in a huge haystack' Les Paul added: 'Remember, this is a wild carp, not one that has been put in a lake. 'This is an absolutely unbelievable catch. I honestly do not think people understand how difficult the venue is, with its vastness and numerous 40ft deep basins. Literally a needle in a huge haystack.' Mr Danson was fishing with peach and sweet orange-flavoured bait in Salford Quays, a stillwater fishery noted for its carp, pike and roach. The official British record carp according to the British Record Fish Committee is the 'Parrot' caught by Dean Fletcher at the Wasing Estate near Reading, Berks, in 2016 which weighed 68lb 1oz. The Committee recognises and publishes record weights of both fresh and salt water fish caught on rod and line by fair angling methods in the waters of England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. The original species of wild carp evolved in the Black, Caspian and Aral seas following the last Ice Age. The wild common carp was introduced to UK waters in the Middle Ages and is now listed as 'Vulnerable' on the global IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Selective breeding has led to many forms such as the leather carp and mirror carp which are commonly found in the UK.

Is Crystal Palace vs Fredrikstad on TV? Kick-off time, channel and how to watch Conference League play-off

Crystal Palace take on Norwegian side Fredrikstad in the first leg of their Europa Conference League play-off tonight, with Oliver Glasner's side looking to put their Europa League demotion behind them. Palace are preparing for their first ever (major) European football campaign and though Glasner's preparations have been interrupted with the transfer speculation around Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze, Palace are well-placed to enter the league phase. An opening day draw to Chelsea further illustrated Palace's status as one of the Premier League's toughest sides to play against, and tonight they face a side who fell into the Conference League after losing their Europa League third-round qualifier 5-1 on aggregate to Danish side FC Midtjylland. The Norwegian minnows are currently eighth in the Norwegian Eliteserien, having won just seven of their 18 matches, and Palace will be expected to put one foot in the league phase with a big result tonight. Here's everything you need to know ahead of the match. When is Crystal Palace vs Fredrikstad? The match is due to kick off at 8pm BST on Thursday, 21 August at Selhurst Park in London, England. How can I watch it? The game will be broadcast free-to-air in the UK on Channel 5, with coverage starting at 7.30pm BST. Next week's second leg will also be shown on 5. Subscribers can also watch the action online via the Channel 5 website. Team news The big question remains whether Ebere Eze will start ahead of his impending move to Arsenal, though early reports suggest the England international will play his final game for Palace tonight. Marc Guehi has also been the subject of plenty of recent transfer speculation and he is another name who could be left out, though once again early reports claim he will play a part in the first leg at least. Glasner has no new injury concerns after the opening draw to Chelsea, with key players including Dean Henderson, Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta all set to start. Palace XI: Henderson; Richards, Lacroix, Guehi; Munoz, Wharton, Hughes, Mitchell; Sarr, Eze; Mateta. Odds Palace win - 1/11 Draw - 8/1 Fredrikstad win - 22/1
