Malaysian Regu Sweep Aside Thailand 2-0 To Clinch Asian Cup Sepak Takraw Title

Barnama15-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia continued to prove its dominance over sepak takraw giants Thailand by emerging as the regu champions in the Asian Sepak Takraw Championship 2025 at Titiwangsa Stadium here tonight.
The Malaysian trio led by Farhan Adam (feeder), Mohammad Syahir Mohd Rosdi (tekong), and Mohamad Azlan Alias (killer), maintained Malaysia's status as a traditional rival after dominating much of the game for about an hour, defeating the team from the White Elephant country, 15-12 and 15-9 in the inaugural edition of the tournament.
The victory also repeats Malaysia's success at the 2024 World Cup in the same event where the national squad won the final match against Thailand.

From doubt to determination - Zii Jia back on track for worlds

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's line-up for the World Championships looks set to remain largely unchanged ahead of Tuesday's (Aug 11) closing entry, with men's singles ace Lee Zii Jia expected to make the trip to Paris from Aug 25-31. It was earlier believed that the former Asian champion Zii Jia might withdraw despite receiving an invitation from the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Zii Jia has been nursing a ligament injury in his right ankle, which forced him out of several tournaments, including the China and Japan Opens. However, as The Star reported earlier, a source close to the player said he has shown encouraging signs of recovery and has been undergoing intensive training with his coach Yeoh Kay Bin. This will be his first outing after a five-month injury layoff, with his last appearance being at the All-England in March. Joining him in the men's singles is Leong Jun Hao, who will be making his debut at the world meet. Zii Jia, however, will not be seeded this time as his ranking has slipped to No. 52. In the women's singles, Goh Jin Wei will be joined by K. Letshanaa. Women's doubles will see Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah going in as the second seeds alongside Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee. Men's doubles will have the largest representation with four pairs – 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 2 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King. The mixed doubles will feature three Malaysian pairs – Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (fourth seeds), husband-and-wife duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie (sixth seeds) and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin (13th seeds). The draw is scheduled on Wednesday (Aug 13).

Wushu star Cheong Min dedicates historic World Games gold to nation

KUALA LUMPUR: Wushu star Tan Cheong Min has dedicated her historic World Games gold medal to the nation as a Merdeka Day gift. Cheong Min struck gold in Chengdu on Saturday in the women's nandao (broadsword) — the first time wushu has been contested as an official event at the World Games. "This gold medal is not just for me. It is for Malaysia and a gift for this year's Merdeka Day," said the Melaka-born athlete. "Previously, wushu wasn't an official World Games event, so the Asian Games and World Championships were our highest platforms. I am very proud and happy." The former world champion hopes her victory will inspire other athletes to push for excellence and further raise the sport's profile. Her win lifted Malaysia's medal tally at the Chengdu Games to three — one gold, one silver and one bronze. Buoyed by her success, Cheong Min is now targeting gold at the World Championships in Brazil in September, before switching her focus to the SEA Games in Thailand in December. She first made her mark by winning the 2017 world title in Kazan in the duilian event, before adding a second world crown in 2019 in Shanghai in the nandao. - Bernama

Tributes to legendary Japan striker hailed by Pele

TOKYO: Japanese football has paid tribute to Kunishige Kamamoto after the country's most prolific striker died aged 81. Kamamoto, who scored 75 goals in 76 appearances for Japan, died on Sunday of pneumonia. "Mr. Kamamoto was truly an unparalleled striker," Japan Football Association president Tsuneyasu Miyamoto said in a statement. The Kyoto native is best remembered for his exploits at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, where he was the top scorer with seven goals and led Japan to the bronze medal. With stamina, agility and physical strength, Kamamoto was first called up to the national squad aged 19. In 1967 he joined Yanmar Diesel, now Cerezo Osaka, plundering 202 goals in 251 games until his retirement in 1984. During the final years of his playing career he also worked as Yanmar's manager. After football Kamamoto shifted to politics, becoming an upper house lawmaker in 1995. He also worked on Japan's bid to host the 2002 World Cup, which was co-hosted with South Korea. Current Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu said Kamamoto "gave us a ray of hope that Japanese football can compete on the international stage", according to Kyodo News. "I'm hoping for a player who could eventually eclipse Mr. Kamamoto to emerge," he added. Kazuyoshi Miura, the former Japan international forward who is still playing aged 58, said Brazilian legend Pele had called Kamamoto "a great striker." Pele played in Kamamoto's retirement match, Kyodo said.
