Coles and Rocchiccioli shine but draw looms large
James Coles made 150 for Sussex and there were six wickets for Warwickshire off-spinner Corey Rocchiccioli but despite their efforts their Rothesay County Championship match is heading for a draw.Coles' second successive Championship hundred helped Sussex take a first-innings lead of 118 after their first innings ended on 533, 20 minutes after tea on day three. It left Warwickshire with 24 overs to get through to stumps and they closed on 88-1, losing Rob Yates for 11 when he inside-edged a fine ball from Ollie Robinson onto his middle stump.Off-spinner Jack Carson nearly broke through late on but Daniel Ibrahim put down a tough chance at short leg to reprieve skipper Alex Davies, who has so far added 66 with Tom Latham as Warwickshire closed 30 runs in arrears. But the effects of a slow pitch and the Kookaburra ball are likely to ensure a stalemate, especially with some rain in the forecast on the final day.Coles, 21, made an unbeaten 148 against Durham last week and followed it up with his sixth first-class hundred, sharing stands of 73 with Ibrahim (36), 59 with John Simpson (30) and 50 with Fynn Hudson-Prentice (45) before he was sixth out, caught behind via an inside edge off Ethan Bamber.Even without Chris Rushworth, who injured his hamstring after sending down just three overs on the second day, Warwickshire bowled diligently and fielded well. Coles, unbeaten on 50 overnight, brought up his hundred with an edge to the boundary just before lunch, but it was one of the few unconvincing shots he played in a 294-ball stay, an outstanding effort on another day of sweltering heat at Hove. He hit 19 fours and pulled a six into the pavilion off Oliver Hannon-Dalby.Warwickshire's hard work in the field was epitomised by Rocchiccioli, the Western Australian who arrived in England for his first taste of county cricket last month having taken 84 Sheffield Shield wickets in the past two seasons. Here he followed up his six wickets on debut against Somerset at Edgbaston last week with six more. Three came on the second day and he had to plug away from the sea end until his 18th over today for further reward when Jack Carson (28) was smartly taken at leg slip.Rocchiccioli then polished off the innings by removing Gurinder Sandhu and Henry Crocombe with successive deliveries. The 328 balls he sent down was the most in an innings by a Warwickshire bowler since Ashley Giles bowled 68.3 overs against Yorkshire at Headingley in 1996. He just about had the strength to doff his cap to acknowledge the appreciative applause of the crowd after he'd sent down his 50th over.Bamber was the pick of Warwickshire's seam attack, picking up Ibrahim who played around a straight one as well as Coles and there was a wicket apiece for Yates and Ed Barnard.ECB Reporters' Network supported by Rothesay

Liverpool in talks with Crystal Palace over move for Marc Guehi
Liverpool are in talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and are pursuing a deal for Parma teenager Giovanni Leoni, the PA news agency understands. Arne Slot's Reds have been busy since winning last season's Premier League, with Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez among the summer arrivals. Liverpool have also seen a £110million bid rejected in recent weeks for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, but defensive reinforcements appear to be the current priority. PA understands the Anfield outfit are in discussions with Palace over a deal for England international Guehi. The 25-year-old captained the Eagles to victory against Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley and is out of contract next summer. Guehi starred in England's run to the Euro 2024 final and will want regular game time ahead of next summer's World Cup. Liverpool are hopeful that the former Chelsea defender wants to join them but sources have denied reports that personal terms have been agreed. PA understands Liverpool are also interested in 18-year-old defender Leoni from Parma and are in talks with the Serie A side. The Italy Under-19 international spent time with Padova and Sampdoria before moving to Emilia-Romagna last year.

Thomas Frank responds to speculation over Tottenham's pursuit of Eberechi Eze
Tottenham boss Thomas Frank remained tight-lipped on the club's pursuit of Eberechi Eze after they entered talks with Crystal Palace over a potential transfer for the England attacker, the PA news agency understands. Spurs have held a long-standing interest in Eze, dating back to his time at QPR, but he subsequently signed for Palace in 2020. Eze has since developed into one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League and Tottenham have set his sights on landing the 27-year-old before the summer transfer window closes. But asked directly about Eze ahead of Wednesday's Super Cup clash with Paris Saint-Germain, Frank, leading Spurs in his first match in charge, said: 'I think there are a lot of good players out there. 'There are also a few from the PSG team but I don't think we can buy them right now. 'So in general, players in or players out, I always speaking about something that is done or not done. In general, I will speak about my own players.' Frank is in need of creativity, though, after chief playmaker James Maddison recently ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and with fellow midfielder Dejan Kulusevski still sidelined for the foreseeable future after his own knee surgery. After a failed pursuit of Nottingham Forest captain Morgan Gibbs-White last month, Spurs have this week ramped up their transfer activity, opening talks with Manchester City on Monday over the signing of versatile attacker Savinho and now in discussions with Palace over Eze. Eze has two years left on his contract at Selhurst Park and has helped the club to FA Cup and Community Shield success during recent months, the latter triumph achieved via a penalty shootout win over Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday. PA understands a release clause in the region of £68million remains active in Eze's current terms, but is set to expire on Friday. It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will activate the clause or attempt to negotiate a more favourable deal, but the Europa League champions are determined to sign Eze, who scored 14 times and produced 11 assists in 43 appearances during the 2024-25 season.

Steven Gerrard convinced ‘incredible' former England star was better than Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe as a teenager
LIVERPOOL legend Steven Gerrard believes 'incredible' Michael Owen was better then BOTH Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe as a teenager. Michael Owen burst onto the scene aged 17 before famously winning the Ballon d'Or whilst at Liverpool in 2001. 2 He scored 18 goals in his first full season in the Premier League, sharing the golden boot with Chris Sutton and Dion Dublin while also sweeping up the PFA Young Player of the Year Award. The ex-Liverpool striker still holds the title of the most goals scored by a teenager in Premier League history as he incredibly netted 40 in 79 matches before turning 20 in 1999. Owen joined Real Madrid for £8million in 2004, cutting short his eight year stay in Merseyside. Although he enjoyed a decent campaign with Los Blancos, he quickly returned to England with Newcastle United, injuries curtailing a promising career. Owen still managed to score 40 England goals but never hit the heights of his early potential. And Gerrard believes that his early Ballon d'Or win - just days after his 22nd birthday - gives the Owen the edge over present day superstars Mbappe and Yamal, although both players have been nominated for the award this year. He told ESPN: "Well, the other two are chasing the Ballon d'Or and one's got one. "So I think you'd have to respect the fact that Michael Owen has been voted the best player in the world. "I played with him. He was an incredible teenager. So I'd have to say Michael Owen [as the best]. "But what I would say is: Mbappe and Lamine Yamal, wow, they're two incredible players." Barcelona's 18-year-old wonderkid Yamal is among the favourites for this years prize, which would make him the youngest-ever winner of the award. The Spanish youngster was a sensation in Catalonia last season, firing on all cylinders and racking up 43 goal involvements in a campaign where his side won the domestic treble. Yamal caught the eye of the entire world in the summer of 2024 as the then 16-year-old helped his country to win the Euros in Germany. As well as winning the competition as a whole, the winger was named Young Player of the Tournament as he racked up the most assists and scored an unbelievable goal in the semi-final against France. I think you'd have to respect the fact that Michael Owen has been voted the best player in the world. Steven Gerrard Mbappe, 26, has been nominated for the Ballon d'Or on EIGHT occasions in his career, becoming the youngest player to ever be nominated in 2017 at 17 years old. However, he is still to win the trophy, having been beaten by the likes of Rodri and Lionel Messi in recent years. His initial nomination came off the back of a superb season at AS Monaco where he helped the French side win their first league title in 17 years. They also got to the semi-finals of the Champions League with Mbappe scoring 28 goals and assisting 16 in all competitions. The Frenchman would follow this up with another incredible year as a teenager after earning a move to French giants PSG for €180 million - the highest fee ever paid for a teenager. France won the World Cup in the summer of 2018 with Mbappe, then 19, netting four along the way and scoring in the final.
