The trailblazing female Cambodian tuk tuk group driving change in a male-dominated industry

It's about 7pm, and night-time has already fallen in Siem Reap, Cambodia, and Ms Kim is sitting in the back bench seat of her own tuk tuk, talking to me via video call on her phone, after a long day of working.
In 2013, she became one of Cambodia's first few female tuk tuk drivers, among the country's tens of thousands of male tuk tuk drivers. Motorbikes pull these motorised two-wheeled carriages with two bench seats – also known as auto rickshaws or 'remorque' in Khmer – and fill the country's streets, an easy and cheap way to traverse its busy traffic.
However, you'll barely see any women driving them, that is, unless you go to Siem Reap. Known as the gateway to Angkor Wat – Cambodia's Unesco-status complex of Hindu-Buddhist temples on the well-trodden backpacker path – there are plenty of tourists to drive around. That's why Ms Kim started Tuk Tuk Lady here, Cambodia's first non-profit organisation for female tuk tuk drivers.
It's now a 50-strong group of women driving tuk tuks around the area's historical sites and taking people to and from restaurants and hotels. The drivers are also easily recognisable thanks to their uniforms of bright blue T-shirts.
Ms Kim says the community was created to 'empower women and give them more confidence and independence, and to break stereotypes' in a very male-dominated society and industry. It also gives them access to the country's growing tourism industry. Among them, there are single mothers, like herself, as well as widows, people with disabilities and young people who don't have work. It gives people who are often disadvantaged the chance to work and contribute.
Tuk Tuk Lady started in 2021, but the idea for it has been brewing since 2013 when Ms Kim got her licence, and getting to where she is now certainly hasn't come without its obstacles. Previously, she had been a street vendor, selling fish and vegetables on roadside markets. But it became a necessity to find other work, as her youngest son has problems with his sight and hearing, and both she and her ex-husband suffered bouts of illness followed by divorce. Worse yet, to pay for treatment, she was forced to sell her tuk tuk. To buy another, which cost $2,200 (£1,700), she had to borrow the money.
In 2013, there weren't any women driving tuk tuks in Phnom Penh. When Ms Kim finally got her licence and went to pick it up, even the people issuing it were surprised that she was a woman and the owner of a tuk tuk. There also weren't many tourists and so she had to rely on the business of locals, which also came with its problems. 'Once I had my licence and started driving on the road, I quickly realised that no one knew I was a tuk tuk driver! There were no passengers waiting for me because the idea of a female tuk tuk driver was still new.'
She also says she was 'looked down on, especially by local people' who didn't think she could do the job. She would also often 'be confused for the customer of the tuk tuk, rather than the driver'. Even after showing potential customers her licence, they still didn't believe her, and so she struggled for work.
It was when she moved from the capital to Siem Reap in 2015 that the tables turned. 'I met a lot of tourists who encouraged me, gave me advice, taught me English and made me feel confident and proud of myself,' she says.
This newfound confidence pushed her to create Tuk Tuk Lady, and when other women saw what she was doing, many wanted to join the community she'd created. For Ms Kim, encouraging other women to believe that whatever men can do, women can do too, is the best part of her community.
Though she says despite having plenty of support from international tourists, disappointedly, 'still, local people don't really support us, we want them to use our service too'. They're also in competition with Indian rickshaws – they're much smaller and usually have green and yellow or black and yellow cabs, but aren't as good for sightseeing as they're more enclosed. 'Local people prefer to use the rickshaw, as they're cheaper, it's one of the challenges for us,' she says. They're also mostly booked on ride-hailing apps, which limit the price on the distance, making them cheaper.
Helping with her success, Ms Kim says social media has been key: 'I'm recommended on TripAdvisor, so I get pre-bookings through this and I also get tourists who want to book me immediately too via WhatsApp.' She's also on other social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, where she promotes her business and is also recommended by the G Adventures tour operator, which connects her drivers to travellers. Her main customers are usually families, as they've heard about Ms Kim's family and want to support her and 'they know I will look after them properly'.
When I ask how her day has been, she says she's happy she's been able to help people today. When she's not driving tourists, she also uses her tuk tuk to deliver books to young children, as well as food to older people, and she is almost brought to tears when she tells me how important this is to her. Her commitment to supporting and improving the lives of her community runs deep.
Ms Kim's tuk tuk community provides far more than simply a service to tourists. Not only is it a way for travellers to connect to local people in Siem Reap and to financially support them, but it's also giving women independence and confidence to be part of something much bigger – they're on the road to equality.

Kim, 67, battles various health conditions including heart failure, two forms of achalasia, diverticulitis, pernicious anaemia, osteoarthritis, and low blood pressure. Stephen explained: "I dug it all out and then the council got in touch and said I might need to put it all back. At the moment I'm £5,000 into this build. "To put it all back – we haven't got the money to do it anyway." Kim added: "If my husband has to park up on the hill it makes it very difficult for me. "I hardly leave the house unless I have to. I have lived here [in Hengoed] all my life and I don't want to move." He disclosed: "They never told me then I needed planning permission. They just told me I needed to pay this £300 - which is about £600 in today's money - that's all they said. "I had the kerb installed and now I want to know if I was miss-sold this. They were happy enough to take my money." A spokesperson for Caerphilly County Borough Council told The Sun: "This is a planning matter and, as such, was dealt with under planning legislation." Chairman Cllr Roy Saralis said he had a "tremendous amount of sympathy". "Obviously it's a sad situation, but planning is planning," he added.

'I stayed in 'enchanting' UK glamping spot by beautiful hikes and thrilling zipwire'

Brits looking for glamping holidays in the UK may want to check out this enchanting spot in North Wales that's tucked away in some of that beautiful Welsh countryside If glamping in North Wales isn't your idea of a luxury getaway, there's one staycation spot that could change your mind. ‌ Set against the dramatic backdrop of Snowdonia National Park, Llechwedd Glamping offers unparalleled views and hotel-style comfort while maintaining an outdoorsy, adventurous feel. ‌ The safari-style lodges, perched on top of a cliff overlooking a working quarry, provide an idyllic bolthole whether you want to hike, wild swim or explore the area's UNESCO-listed slate landscape. They're part of the newly renovated 4* Plas Weunydd Hotel nestled amongst beautiful Welsh mountains and moorland. ‌ I visited in June with my sister Romilly, 23, mum Emma, 62 and our crazy English Pointer, Daphne. From the moment we arrived, it was an adventure. The slope to the cabins is too steep for cars, so the friendly hotel staff ferry you and your luggage to the top in a pickup truck. The dog-friendly glamping lodges felt like a luxury hotel suite, and come complete with a kitchen, plush double bunk beds (sleeps five), an en-suite with hot shower and every conceivable mod-con from super-speed WIFI to rechargeable table lamps. The walls are adorned with old black and white snaps of the slate miners hard at work in the quarry below. The wood-burning stove, basket of logs, firelighters and matches were a much-appreciated touch. As were the hot water bottles in cosy knitted covers, two plug-in heaters, board games (we enjoyed many rounds of the Logo Game!) and tin of dog treats (Daphne couldn't get enough). There's a private deck too but we didn't make use of it much as the British weather wasn't on our side. As for the food and drink, the hotel had a great selection of locally sourced dishes, but we opted for the pizza-making kit and cooked our creations in the lodge's very own al fresco pizza oven. Freshly made dough, Mutti tomato sauce, mozzarella and chorizo are beautifully presented in a wicker basket alongside essential tools like rolling pins, pizza cutters and rustic wooden serving boards. The wind was high on top of the cliff which made lighting the oven a bit tricky, but once away we had piping hot pizza in no time. ‌ The breakfast offerings are also top-notch. Glampers can go for a breakfast pack of pastries, cereal, juice and bread delivered to the cabin (£12.99) or, like us, take advantage of the hotel breakfast, which exceeded all expectations. Served in the tastefully refurbished pooch-friendly dining area, visitors can tuck into any variation of a traditional Welsh breakfast (like an English breakfast but with the optional addition of cockles and laverbread!) cooked fresh to order. ‌ We kept it safe with with poached eggs on toast followed by yogurts and freshly-baked croissants from the self-service area - all of which went down a treat! Little touches, including the miniature jars of gourmet ketchup and brown sauce, added a high-end feel to the experience. Located in the historic slate town of Blaenau Ffestiniog and overlooking the Moelwynion mountains, Plas Weunydd is perfectly positioned for those looking to explore the dramatic landscape. For seasoned hikers, Wales' highest peak Mount Snowdon is a 40-minute drive away. But if, like me, you enjoy a more leisurely stroll, Dyffryn Maentwrog woods is a must-visit. ‌ Located a 10-minute drive from the hotel, an enchanting circular trail takes you past Llyn Mair lake, built by local landowner William Edward Oakeley as a 21st birthday present for his daughter Mair in 1889. The nearby Victorian ornamental pond and Japanese-style stone seat, built by the family at a similar time, are the perfect spot to take it all in. I particularly enjoyed hearing the distant chug of the Ffestiniog steam railway which runs through the woods. Located next-door to the glamping site is Zip World Llechwedd, one of Wales' most visited attractions. Positioned in amongst the historic slate mines, families and hardcore adrenaline-hunters can take their pick of seven adventures. ‌ We braved a ride on Titan, Europe's first four person zip line, featuring two sections of zip lines spanning over a kilometre (£60 per person). Specially converted ex-army trucks take you to a dizzying height of 1,400ft where you catch two zipwires back down to base camp. Although high, we were pleasantly surprised by the ride's leisurely speed, allowing us to take in the stunning views of the quarry below. Those scared of heights can head underground instead to Bounce Below, an enormous underground net adventure where you can jump and slide your way through the disused mine. It's ideal for adults and children from seven years and up whatever the weather and is a great alternative to traditional trampoline parks.
